Olivia Rodrigo show us her fears, expectations and frustations as a teenager on the lyrics of her debut album, in terms of sonorities, she show us her versatility as a artist, 'SOUR' is pop, but is rock, alternative and folk too, and the mixture of genres does not make the album lose its fluidity and cohesion.

From start to finish, this album amazed me. For a debut album to be this good is a big accomplishment. From the rock inspired bangers like brutal and good 4 u to emotional ballads like favorite crime and traitor, Rodrigo blows us away with her strong vocals and even stronger lyrics. My only complaint is that I wish it was longer.

SOUR is an excellent album for the heartbroken. With detailed lyrics, music that is part pop-balladry and part fuzzy-guitar-rock, and tracklisting that has a seemingly perfect flow. This album is the most impressive debut studio album coming from an 18-year-old, and it's exciting to see where her career could go!

Dare I say Olivia had the best debut album of the last 5 years? I do. Olivia had a very strong record that was very emotionally charged. The record was pretty short but I will say that I think it was nice having a no skip record versus a 17 song album that you skip half songs. The songwriting was fantastic and obviously, there's room to grow, but this is a very strong album. HighlightsDare I say Olivia had the best debut album of the last 5 years? I do. Olivia is a talented artist and she is miles ahead of where her main influences ( Lorde and Taylor Swift ) were when they were her age or when they debuted. Daniel Nigro also proves to me an immaculate and versatile producer who brings Olivia's vision out in the best way possible. The album is an amalgamation of various sounds including punk-rock, pop-rock, indie-pop and ballads. She emphasizes the same theme of heartbreak and sadness in most of the songs but at the same time she does it skillfully and all while exploring various sounds. Most of the songs have a very somber tone and they display raw emotion and teenage distress. Not to mention her impressive vocal ability which she shows off on the more acoustic songs like enough for you and traitor. The only negative thing i could say is she relies too much on the same narrative about this break up and its not really a multi-dimensional break up; she was madly in love, he broke up with her, he moved on very quickly. This is the same narrative in drivers license, traitor, good 4 u, traitor, happier , deja vu and most of the other songs. It could get boring. Luckily, it doesn't because she keeps things very short and sweet. At just 35 minutes, the album is the right length and it does what it needs to do. It shows Olivia has a lot of talent and she is just getting started. Expand

It gives us feelings that we can't even relate properly - because we've never experienced particular and singular things that she has -, but we truly feel whatever she's singing by the way she sings it. The themes range from loving disillusionment to the sorrows of aging without prospects or thinking you've wasted time and were masterfully addressed by the "good 4 u" singer in this record. However, it was the next single, "deja vu" that caught my interest. "good 4 u" continued this sustained intrigue of mine. It made me eager to check out "SOUR" when it would drop.

The opening track, "brutal", is self-explanatory. It starts with some cinematic strings, which are quickly scrapped for some heavy and angsty guitars. It is just the contrast that the song needs. "traitor", for me, personally is a nice tune, but it's not one of my favorites.

"drivers license", the album's quintessential tune, is a sweeping pop song about heartbreak and teenage romance, which sets up "1 step forward, 3 steps back" for success. It's a sweet sounding song. "deja vu" and "good 4 u" go well together in the tracklisting, with another acoustic ballad ("enough for you") after.

The album's later cuts, like "happier" and "jealousy, jealousy" are great fun as well, with whispers of the pop sounds of Lorde and Taylor Swift, but with a unique Olivia twist. "favorite crime" made me wonder how much better the album would be with one or two more upbeat songs instead of ballads, but "hope ur ok" really closed the album in an endearing and appealing way.

"SOUR" is an impressive debut. It sets Rodrigo apart from the rest of the pop stars of the time. It'll be exciting to see where she goes from here.

A short but well done debut album of a girl who is sure to only improve with time and experience. The singles (Driver's License, Deja Vu, and Good 4 U) are probably my favorites off the album, but Olivia's songwriting skills are definitely on display across the board. I can't wait to see what she does in the future!

Rodrigo has just come out of the Disney world after acting in a couple of shows she started off in Bizardvk which sadly ended up getting cancelled, but this ended up in her way, as this pathed her to where she is now. Olivia comes out of nowhere with the heartfelt young relatable song called drivers licence and follows it with a High production Project. Sour has really good well constructed ideas that were really relatable for teens around her age, and with a culture filled with society, it seemed they really did love it. Sour to me represents the feelings that late teen feels throughout their teen years. There are songs about; being in love happily, being in love in a sad way, a song about being stressed and even songs about complaining. A relatble masterpiece.

What I must focus on 100% is the suffering that this girl has suffered during her adolescence. It's great to see how she channeled her emotions into music, but, I think the industry is too big and dangerous for a transparent queen like her. I hope to be wrong; her tracklist is already in the Billboard Top 40, so we know who's boss now. Is this the Jagged Little Pill of the centennials? Leaving aside that private life, the influence of her likes is notorious, such as country, Taylor Swift, Paramore, etc., and the best thing is that she credits all that; It isn't easy to see singers doing it because of the great artistic ego that predominates in the industry.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Its good album, lyrically it is quite lacking in diversity from song to song. The album is solely about the breakup between Olivia and her ex and it is all that is talked about, so can be a bit boring at times. Musically, it is not overproduced so there is some raw sound, but this just makes her sound even more like Billie Eilish. Its a pretty good debut album but nothing special. Expand

Her songwriting isn't anything new or groundbreaking, it's her performance that gets my attention anyway. This will probably undeservedly (or maybe deservedly, music might suck this year, but we've still got a few months to make it a full house) get nominated for pop album/album of the year at the Grammy's, MTV's, you name it, but I do actually hope Olivia goes on to have a successful career. She is definitely one of the more talented artists out right now and this wipes Taylor's debut album. But for the love of all things holy get over your ex. We don't want you to turn into Adele. After the first listen I have to admit that "SOUR" is undoubtably not a bad pop record. Olivia's chart successes and certifications speak for themselves. But it's just difficult for me to relate to the songs, which is mainly because I'm definitely not Olivia's target audience.

Despite all this, Olivia Rodrigo's debut is melancholic and strongly reminds of Lorde's debut "Pure Heroine"

Despite all this, Olivia Rodrigo's debut is melancholic and strongly reminds of Lorde's debut "Pure Heroine" (2013), which changed the world of pop in a similar way back then. For me, "SOUR" offers not much in terms of artistry; it's not room-filling and too flat. Perhaps the collection of breakup songs describes the style of Gen Z teenage girl pop. But it falls short on versatility and it hasn't really got a message. All in all, it's overhyped - 7 out of 10.

    My favorites:
    "drivers license"
    "good 4 u"
    "deja vu"
    "hope ur ok"

Her combination of sweet melodies and bitter moods, her conversational flow, and her self-awareness are all skills many songwriters twice her age would love to call their own, and they make Sour a well-rounded emotional journey and strong debut album.

Sour, for the most part, is a pop album that dips its toes into the alt-pop and bedroom pop subgenres, specifically spending most of its time in the latter. ... Rodrigo's lo-fi deep cuts that were made in the shadow of "Drivers License" can sound a bit repetitive. Her craft as a songwriter is especially evident on tracks like "Enough For You", "Happier", or "Hope Ur Ok", but the acoustic complexion these songs were going for could have benefitted from a bit more background noise.

By the end of the album, Rodrigo has established her voice and showed listeners that she's not afraid to be vulnerable. SOUR is a strong debut that vividly illustrates the beautiful chaos of being inside a teenage girl's brain.
