The level design is as imaginative as always and like it's never been before. No one in the world can replicate this. The current title benefits from moving to the Flower Kingdom, where all of the main six hubs and dozens of levels have different rules than in previous games. Got a Switch? Get Super Mario Bros. Super Mario Bros. Wonder implements the recent trend of adding adventure elements to the 2D action genre. The Wonder Flowers cause surprising twists and the new multiplayer contributes to making a new 2D Mario adventure feel fresh again. That being said, we would have wanted Super Mario Bros. Wonder to feel even more wondrous.
While it doesn't break the mould like its predecessors have, Super Mario Bros. Wonder is the perfect refinement of 2D platforming, and one of the most polished and engrossing games you'll play all year.
Super Mario Bros. Wonder certainly lives up to its name by offering a spectacle-filled and simply magical experience where you never know what sort of clever twist will pop-up next. Plus, it has a surprising level of challenge for anyone wanting to test their platforming skills.
It is a game that tries to evoke a feeling of discovery at every possible turn, but in doing so loses the element of wonder fairly quickly. Instead, Wonder's strongest moments are when it takes a breather, taking the time to set the scene while letting the platforming do the talking.
SMW isa very good game and we had a great time playing a 2 player coop with a friend. It's fun it's colourful some "wonder" parts are really fun ... albeit often too short.
The coop mode works well most of the time, but like every "not-strictly coop" games... some stages are a bit clunky with more than one player.
However, in a world where rayman legends exists.... it's really hard to push the score above a respectable 7 because there are so many similarities and Rayman does it better and have much more contents (for a third of the price). I enjoyed SMW... but by the end of it I wanted to replay Rayman instead of finding all the coins and seeds of SMW
The jumping noise in this game is the worst sound effect I've ever heard in a video game, or maybe even in any context ever. It's so out of place and grating that I'm truly astounded it made it into the final product.
Maybe it's because I grew up in the 80s and 90s and remember how perfectly fun and difficult those early side scrollers were and how accomplished a felt at beating a level, let alone the game.
This game is the opposite of that. Literally nothing is difficult to the point that it feels like you are just going through the motions. Mario was never about story so having essentially no story and levels that are, while graphically interesting, ultimately boring af, means that I can't give this more than a 4/10. Playing with my husband after taking a gummy maybe I could bump it up to a 6/10 .temporarily. But that's because we are fun, not the game.
