Not only are Ty Segall fans likely to be pressing this on people for the next few months, it also might be just about the best album he’s put his own name to.

If you're looking for a relatively concise 10-track, 36-minute introduction into the best of Segall's music, this is it.

What sets Ty Segall apart from Slaughterhouse--and most of his albums--is the well-measured balance between the heavy Ty and the more melodious Ty. He moves back and forth throughout, but easily maintains unison under his idiosyncratic character; and the album is crafted to ebb and flow.

It might be his best work to date. Just about everything here is good.

A ten song rock record that draws on Segall’s strength as a catchy songwriter and riff manipulator.

Far from nailing down who he is or what he’s attempting in this second self-titled album, Ty Segall seems to be trying all different things. Good for him.

He’s is nothing short of a chameleon when it comes to garage rock, and this is one of his most impressive outputs yet.

While Ty Segall may not be his opus, but it’s certainly a testament to his fruitful brain and the unparalleled output that spills forth from it--a mind on a marathon, yet to stumble.

The meandering midsection of Warm Hands is a slight misstep, but this is another impressive addition to Segall’s canon.

This stripped-back, honest approach exposes the inconsistencies and vulnerabilities of the man, while also bringing to the exterior the charisma and charm of a laissez-faire psych icon.

Ty Segall is his finest effort to date, a superb record and one that will help save rock ’n’ roll, which isn’t dead, it’s merely been regrouping.

It’s as wicked as Twins at a fraction of the cost, as weird as Melted but twice as pretty, oozing acerbic coffee, acid mud, and gasoline.

One jaunt through the bracing and surprisingly sweet at times Ty Segall is proof enough that he's run out of neither [gas and/or ideas], and it doesn't seem like he will anytime soon.

As much as Ty Segall is an album of potential singles material, it’s one of the most cohesive sets of music that Segall has released to date.

Ty Segall is a mixture of boisterous and blissful, and certainly is a great place to start if you're looking to introduce someone to Segall's ever-fattening discography.

Whether it’s the jarring track-to-track juxtapositions or within the shape-shifting songs themselves, Ty Segall shows that, nearly a decade into the game, the only predictable thing about Segall is his ability to continually surprise.
  18. 80
    Scraping off the garage
rock grit and disjointed sharp edges that characterised his
previous album ‘Emotional Mugger’ for this definitive self-portrait, Segall scrubs
up great.

Pleasingly, Segall's root wildness is enhanced by their [Ben Boye, Mikal Cronin, Emmett Kelly, and Charles Moothart's] jamming virtuosity. [Feb 2017, p.37]

Even though there it no overarching message here beyond the powerful insistence on only living free, Segall has delivered a record with purpose that, above all else, recognises that freedom and love reign supreme.

While far from a masterpiece, Ty Segall provides a neatly packaged summary for why the singer is a modern rock ‘n’ roll treasure.

Even when he doesn’t break new ground, Segall and Ty Segall remain solid investments. There’s definitely something to be said for getting exactly what you pay for with a new album.

Despite a few too many lacklustre and inconsequential tracks, there are some incredible highs here and songs that will sound phenomenal when played live.

Crunchy and resolute, Ty Segall's newest self-titled toaster turns up some unearthed crust and butter that is both satiating and balanced. [Jan - Mar 2017, p.67]

Ty Segall itself reveals--even more so than Emotional Mugger and Manipulator before it--a willingness to park the DIY or garage rock tag, however momentarily.

It’s a zany but melodically substantial record, in which the best songs (Thank You Mr K, Freedom) sit somewhere between the oeuvres of the Lemonheads and the Ramones.

Listen to the 10 minute opus "Warm Hands (Freedom Returned)" and tell me that this isn't some of the best material Ty has ever released. You could just feel this sort of an album waiting to be unleashed on the world after last years crazy and delightfully zany "Emotional Mugger", and here it is in all it's (self-titled) glory.
