Lorde's new release Solar Power is a musical take on laying on a beach towel and feeling the Sun bake the salt to your skin, its a slow chemical process though a relaxing process. The music has a lot of space which allows you to sit in between and ponder and contemplate. The songs take you on a ride through the moods and thoughts of an artist who is in the middle of figuring out how to take her music in a different direction, we are watching her grow. You need the Sun to grow and solar power provides this.

There are certain albums I relate to on a personal level because it coincides with major life moments: heartbreak, love, loss/grief, etc, but this one fills the gaps with what I think/worry about in between those bigger moments. Lorde has always been ahead of her time and I truly believe this record will be a cult classic and appreciated years later. Expand

Solar Power is Lorde's Album of Healing. It transcends you into this summer world of peace that you might have nostalgia for in this pandemic. Overall her return to nature after her teen angst and sonical trauma shows her power. And she says, "but you gotta want it for yourself".

While Lorde’s lyrics still cut deep as she reaches the quarter life mark. Introspective and tongue in cheek. Solar Power is another solid body of work. But listening to this album, you do wonder, if Lorde collaborated with a different producer instead of Jack, what would this album sound like?

Of course we were all expecting the Lorde we’ve all come to know and love. Sure, it isn’t the radio friendly edge that carried us through much of our highest moments pre-pandemic. However, this album is full of delicate introspection that serves a greater purpose: to remind the world of the vulnerabilities of our icons and our shared struggles and fears, especially global issues that are increasingly threatening life as we know it.

If you’re not a fan on the first listen, try listening with quality headphones and the lyrics in front of you— it is a sonically relaxing and lyrically enlightening experience. And try to appreciate and respect the human on the other side of the speaker, someone who like each of us, should not be creatively limited to the expectations of our peers.

Mucha vibra envolvente y fresca, tal cual como el título "Solar Power"; sin embargo las inconexiones entre los distintos cortes, hacen que se pierda el hilo, viajando en el mismo paisaje; la misma carretera. That seems to have been the general consensus. Lorde's return came with a bright warning as SP bright lead single invited us to join her on her idyllic commune. It channeled George Michael's classic freedom 90 along with primal screams ''Loaded'', to no complaint (except from the public) the record sent a collective dread throughout the music sphere. With fans either hating it passionately or others claiming "its not that bad " . And from that moment things would stay the same: the noted similarities, the divisiveness then dejected appreciation. The record begins with a magnificent start luring you in with flutes and hyper specific lyrics in the vein of Lorde before exploding into a gratifying chorus in which she dispels celeb worship culture. An opener worthy of green or being a cathartic closer. "California " blows in with a psychedelic warmth and one of the best opening lyrics of 2021. Seemingly sparse emphasizing her raspy voice Lorde remunerates on the day that brought her to the "camera flash " with self awareness beyond her years descending into the blissful hopeful outro. Jumping years future "Stoned At The Nail Salon" begins vying for the best lyric of this decade in its opening line. In it like most of the album she reflects on her life post fame: the implications and consequences. Switching between memories of anonymity/privacy to the grace of domesticity she builds a content image . One which negates her touring life with her horded normalcy. One of my highlights about SP is the narrative coherence. The production so far has been swarmed with acoustic guitars, deceptive drums and airy production flourishes that aim to accentuate and not take center stage. Admittedly, Antanoff commercial demand has made the album less effective due to derivative moment's but he can forgiven in helping Lorde execute her vision. Album fan favorite "FF" comes with the closets to electronic production in SP will ever be. Addressing the climate change with adept imagery. From the failed previous generations wasted efforts to theirs. The songs second half is fu.kin brilliant! The 2k pop of Robyn assisted outro is catchy and breathtaking. Using the reversed cords of 'ribs' she addresses "PH" Ella before the experimental calm of the Robyn outro. The sonic sister "MR" goes full circle with a bubble gum pop sound narrated by satirical wellness celeb culture critiques. The emotional high points "MWAA"&"BS" channel liability&WITD as they address love and grief with the confessional dexterity attributed to Lorde. What I learned midway is this isn't a Lorde record it's an Ella record. She's flexing her lyrical prowess through 3rd person narratives (Dominoes &Helen Of Troy) along with her family, bliss and state of mind in the blockbuster bjorkian "Oceanic Feeling ",a career best. In summary SP is a stellar somewhat quite record that despite succumbing to surface level monotony manage to hold it's place in the year bests. Favorite's :big star, the path, man with an axe, mood ring, dominoes Expand

Of course, each album is different in its own way ... or do you want the same girl doing the same thing over and over again? Why do we allow Gaga to reinvent herself? Or Taylor? Every time Ed reinvents himself, he goes from bad to worse and nobody says anything to him. Let the artists experiment! Leave Ella with her folkloric vibe and lack of percussion; she has done things for a reason, and it is time to enjoy them as they are. SP has not captivated me much, tbh, but I try, and it's true.

This album has gotten some harsh criticism I don't think is deserved. Complaints like it's too positive for the pandemic (the "read the room" defense), that it's too boring, that it's not cool enough, all seem very shallow.

Some other critiques make more sense to me. Like that it doesn't have the clear overarching theme her previous two albums do, or that some songs blend together in

It's still a very good album, just not as good as her other ones

Absolutely disgusting. After waiting for so many years for her to drop a new album this is just disappointing. She created 2 10/10 albums with PH and Melo but this album is just a mess. There was nothing exciting, maybe here and there but nothing jaw dropping. She set the Bar to high for herself and this album needed more time. Most songs felt like Demos from a production stand point. The lyrics were in classic Lorde fashion but the sound was too bland. Call me a hater but I would not care if I never listen to these songs ever again. Just bland records, another victim to Jack Antonoffs new found laziness. I really hope she drops him for her 4th album… Expand

Im torn. I can see why some people might love this album and some might hate it. My feelings toward Solar Power are somewhere in the middle. Is this a great album? No. Is it a good album? Its her most laid back album to date and yet there seems to be a lot missing. The opening track The Path is easily one of my favorite Lorde tracks of all time. Most of the tracks on here are pretty but forgettable. Ive warmed up to the singles Solar Power and Mood Ring but they still lack bite. I can almost guarantee that Lorde's next album will perhaps be her most personal and most mature and im looking forward to that. After three albums Lorde has two big hits and Solar Power is like a soft kiss in the wind. It wont leave a long lasting impression but its good enough for this moment now and hey maybe thats what Lorde is going for, she wants us to live in this moment now. ***1/2 out of 5 stars. Expand

This is an album that takes a lot of time to listen too, it actually grows on you the more you listen to it, while there are songs that sound the same there are some really great standout tracks like Fallen Fruit, Mood Ring, & The Path. While it is a step down from Melodrama it isn’t a bad album at all, it’s different and unique, it’s a great relaxing album to listen too, it just takes time.

A little bit sad. Not the sound of melodies or a concept of the album. It's just not the Lorde I fell in love with a long time ago....

The album is worth waiting for. I love how Lorde is not afraid to change musical direction. The songwriting is astonishing. Critics should stop making her previous albums as the standard of her. I love Solar Power!

I love how she reinvents her self in every album. This sounds nothing like "Pure Heroine" or "Melodrama" and that's the cool thing. She is growing up and experimenting with her sound. At first listen and after reading some fan reviews I felt a little disappointed, but after 4-5 listens to the album, I really love it and think it has no skips. I can't wait to hear this record on my vinyl player!

The easiest way to put this album is that it's dreamy. Every part of this album feels like opening a different part of Lorde's brain. First, the opening track "The Path." Lorde opens the album in a way that easily beats all the singles. Second, "Secrets From A Girl (Who's Seen It All)," that song is amazing, it's the chords of "Ribs" reversed as she sings to herself from her first era. The song features a beautiful spoken part featuring Robin Carlsson. Now, the low points; in my opinion, "Solar Power" was the only serious low point, and nevertheless, I think it fits well in the context of the album, just not as a single and it still sounds straight from a Claritin commercial, but you know an album is great when its lowest point is still a 7/10. Overall, this album is significantly better than I was expecting and I do feel this album was worth the 4-year wait despite how the critics may feel. *EDIT: Coming back 3-months post release, this has just been an overall disappointment. I tried to like it, I really did. Unfortunately the roll out was a total mess and it just won't touch Melodrama. What a shame :( Expand

Solar Power lacks energy and the strong personality Lorde showed us in her previous body of work, "Melodrama". What actually saves this work is Jack Antonoff's work that is great, as always.

I love love love Lorde, and have bought the vinyl to support but… I feel this will sit on the shelves and won’t get much spin time. It def an album you need to be in the mood for, not sure which mood that is yet to be determined. I won’t stop trying though as she is really invested in this, maybe before it’s time ?

My favourite tracks on this album are with no doubt "Solar Power", "Fallen Fruit" (laudable bridge), "Oceanic Feeling" and "Helen of Troy". I did not appreciate "The Man with the Axe" and I find the central part of the album a bit sleepy compared to the rest of it, but still good. Expand

It's a really personal, deep and vulnerable album. As a Lorde fan since Pure Heroine, I'm still impressed with her ability of reinventing herself every time, with every music or album, and I feel so lucky for having the opportunity to access this new phase. It's incredible and Fallen Fruit is totally my favorite!!

Lorde said true when she said on album aren't any weak lines, all are amazing. This is definitely my favorite album by her.

Can we talk about Mood Ring for a little bit? That song is absolute perfection. Strong 60s influence and early 2000s pop influence, it's catchy, amazing vocals and amazing lyrics. I think maybe Lorde's best song.

All these connections Lorde is trying to make: her strange pastiche imagination of the ’70s, that random spoken word interlude by Robyn about climate change, and the themes of “sun healing,” never fully reach each other. Often, they come off as disingenuous and out of touch more than they read as brilliant, or comical. Whether the album is one big prank, or just one majorly failed experiment, the gist of having the “privilege to ignore” is lost in translation. All you are left with is just a handful of pretty alright songs.

If you're riding and vibing with Lorde, this bright shapelessness is superb mood music. If you're not riding her wave, Solar Power can seem elusive, even cloying, as it circles and sways with a smile.
