different is not synonymous with the word "bad." it's timeless. she dedicated several years to each piece and it shows. she has had the opportunity to grow as an individual and her mental health is better. melodrama and pure heroine come from a teenage side of her. i am proud of her

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. With her third Studio Album Lorde explores an entirely new Sound for her. The Melodies of every Song are unbelievably beautiful with an production that even tops her second Album Melodrama. The Lyricism is the cherry on top of Solar Power, beautifully written Lyrics that have Lordes complex Vocabulary but at the same time are easy to understand. It‘s definitely something new that some might need some time to adjust too but it was definitely worth the wait. Expand

Her song writing continues to speak for itself, wrapped in a cocoon of production (spearheaded by Lorde herself) that is so different than anything I'm hearing in the contemporary world of music. Jack Antonoff's contributions to this production can't go un-missed, and their teamwork shines through. The themes are so exotic feeling, as if summer is breathing on your neck and all there is to do is look inside yourself and feel good about it. I've listened three times, and the highlights for me are The Path, Solar Power, California, Stoned at the Nail Salon, Fallen Fruit, Secrets From a Girl (Who's Seen It All), Dominoes, Big Star, Mood Ring and Hold No Grudge. She told us what she was looking for to achieve with this release and she deliveries it. It's a happy mature album from a 24yo woman who does not relate to the songs she wrote when she as a kid anymore and that now wants to explore other themes and technicals skills.

Lorde really pushed herself through with vocals on this album, and anyone who's listen to a single song from her past works know that this is true. She's been more involved in production in this new album than in any other before and it's really refreshing to hear someone experimenting new abilities and studying something new. We already know by her 2 first albums what's she can do, and he'll yeah she can do anything with mastery, now what we're supposed to be expecting from her is anything that we DONT know she can do, and this is a nice, happy, and brave delivery of it. It's disappointing that Lorde was more interested in mocking anglo-saxon soccer moms sprawled out on yoga mats than she was putting out a single with some semblance of originality. And the line about not wanting to be a savior, when she had publicly called out other artists for the toxic implications of their music in the past, seemed contradictory and was a bit of a head scratcher. Melodrama certainly wasn't the masterpiece others have made it out to be either, but at least that record had tracks that could easily be distinguished from each other. The instrumentation on Solar Power simply doesn't play into Lorde's strengths. She's at her best when she's belting out formulaic synth-laden bops and bangers. The Laurel Canyon sound doesn't suit her and frankly should be left to the contemporaries who can do something interesting with it; she is not a Lana Del Rey who can excel with most any genre she touches, so she should refine the sound that works best. If it's not necessarily commercial success she's after, then I wonder what that 4 year break was for, because the message isn't what most would consider to be revelatory. Musings about the pressures of being a pop star and healing through nature are cliche, and when you've thrown poorly executed satire into the mix, you've got an album with a muddled focus. Speaking of satire, Lorde should be careful about parodying spirituality. Rene Descartes put it best: "Any community that gets its laughs by pretending to be idiots will eventually be flooded by actual idiots who mistakenly believe that they're in good company." I'm feeling a strong cringe to a light yikes on this one. Expand

This album smiles and winks at you with its’ constant hints to Lorde’s folk-rock forbears like Joni Mitchell ans The Mama’s and Papa’s. It truly feels like she’s become a lady of the canyon in this summery and shimmering work

Such an amazing album. The way Lorde is able to completely transform her style of singing and still manage to make it sound heavenly is so cool.

the album presents a cohesion and a present concept from beginning to end, its theme of leaving the comfort zone of the legendary Melodrama shows the diversity of this woman

This album is unlike all of her previous work, especially the lyrics this time is really a step up for Lorde. It is successful in its own term: A Lorde's true escapism experience from all the stardom, with great storytelling that dives deep into her personal life.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. In general, I f***ing love this album. There's a few songs I don't vibe with as much as others, so I guess you could say there's a few skips for me. But overall, I think she really nailed the project.

The themes that she wove into the album as a whole are present in every track - to varying degrees- so I'd say that all the songs work synergistically and listening to the whole album has a much greater affect on you than just some of the songs.

Oceanic Feelings is an unequivocal masterpiece.

It is different from what I expected (and I was really hoping from something sounding like Pure Heroine or Melodrama), but this album shows evolution, versatility and growth. It helped me chill out and just seize the day.

All these connections Lorde is trying to make: her strange pastiche imagination of the ’70s, that random spoken word interlude by Robyn about climate change, and the themes of “sun healing,” never fully reach each other. Often, they come off as disingenuous and out of touch more than they read as brilliant, or comical. Whether the album is one big prank, or just one majorly failed experiment, the gist of having the “privilege to ignore” is lost in translation. All you are left with is just a handful of pretty alright songs.

If you're riding and vibing with Lorde, this bright shapelessness is superb mood music. If you're not riding her wave, Solar Power can seem elusive, even cloying, as it circles and sways with a smile.

This might not be the album that everyone wanted from Lorde, but it’s a solid, dreamy effort that deserves exploration. There’s plenty here worthy of attention if you can focus for long enough.
