This isn’t merely a remarkable return: it’s one most one of the most assured--and assuredly rewarding--albums of the year thus far.

Any Day is their sharpest set of songs to date, but Sam Prekop's languid melodies still prove defiantly elusive. [Jun 2018, p.35]

The consistent rapport between Prekop, Prewitt and McEntire is more than enough to propel the Sea and Cake steady on their course.

With Sam Prekop on vocals, though, a Sea and Cake album is genetically incapable of sounding like anything other than a Sea and Cake album.

It’s the pleasant sameness of it that makes me both excited to hear a new Sea & Cake release and a little disappointed that, considering the work that its membership does outside this fold, there’s not more there.

If Any Day has that low-stakes feel, their flow just as effortless, it's because they're still keen to deliver a sort of refined muzak on steroids that never ages.

So, reliable business as usual then for The Sea And Cake but with enough under-familiarity to neuter any contempt. Long-time loyalists will have few complaints.

The Sea and Cake continue to be champions for the weary and resolute alike, being both the soothing reassurance of beauty and the wistful resolve that the most dogged absolute is the very impermanence of everything. It’s a deceptively tricky feat and one that they continue to thrive on.

There's nothing fashionable about the Sea and Cake's music, and therein lies much of their charm.

To complement lyrics that go for the melancholic jugular, the trio of Sam Prekop, Archer Prewitt, and John McEntire stuff the record with pulsing drums, a tasteful mixture of synths and organs and subdued, yet still chugging guitars. [Mar - May 2018, p.59]

The electronics of their earlier work are pared back, leaving their comfort zone reupholstered with goose down. But it’s no great shakes, because the Sea and Cake are one of those bands who essentially put out the same album over and over again, which doesn’t matter all that much--no one else sounds remotely like them.

Eschewing electronic production flourishes in favour of some analogue authenticity, Any Day eventually settles into its groove. The melodies are intricate and layered, but the impressive musicality is outweighed by a lack of urgency.

The group have been honing their craft for over 20 years and all their trademarks can be found here. [Jun 2018, p.96]

Closing waltz "These Falling Arms" shows off the band's skill at weaving together sighing guitars with an easygoing melody. By comparison, the remaining eight selections sandwiched in the middle range from not-bad to kinda-boring.
