A glowing tribute to The Beatles and their music, this is both a toe-tapping pleasure to watch and a smart, occasionally scathing look at how we get things wrong.
So, is Yesterday a one-trick Dig a Pony or did renowned British screenwriter Richard Curtis and the great British filmmaker Danny Boyle turn a cute hook into something meaningful? The answer is that the duo tries for the latter, but doesn’t quite nail it.

If you love Beatles music, you should love this movie. Some critics seem to nitpick the plot, but they are missing the broader picture. I think the writers/directors made excellent choices in what to include. Of course, some threads that might have been interesting to pursue in the alternate reality plot there was just no time for. Nevertheless they included plenty of content to laugh and cry over. I found myself thinking about this movie long after it was over, which is a sign **** movie.

Fairy tales edge toward strangeness, and the sanded edges of Yesterday ultimately feel more like a flashy commercial — one of those recent music documentaries commissioned by the people on screen, propaganda with feels. The music’s good, duh, and it’ll be just as good when your local high school performs Yesterday. Which lucky kid gets to play Ed Sheeran?
Yesterday isn’t nearly as fantastical, sweet, or light on its feet as it could be—and maybe that’s because of that darn premise. It’s somehow both too basic and too rich. There’s too much one could do with it, but too little vision in what Boyle and Curtis ultimately put forward—even as real tensions, real sticks in music history’s craw, populate the margins.
This is a film that could have been triumphantly weird, or soaringly corny; it tries to split the difference and ends up merely forgettable.
Yesterday, a fantasy that works well enough as a Beatles love letter but falls short in the love-story department.
Yesterday isn’t really about the Beatles. It isn’t about art, or career, or cultural context, or the music business, and it’s only about “love” inasmuch as Hallmark cards and McMansion word art are about love. It isn’t really about anything.
I loved this film. Quirky, humble and intimate. Great acting and lots of English humour. As a child of the 60s I never knew I loved the Beatles music so much. The lead actor does a brilliant job of reinventing their music while ensuring that everything that was so special, original and perfect in their tunes and lyrics comes through. Certainly a film to watch over and over.

I love The Beatles and the inclusion of their music is really well done but I wish the story and characters were fleshed out more.

What a disappointment. The premise is spot-on, but the writing fails to follow through. So, so much could've been done here, but all we're left with is a male lead whose face bears the same expression of discomfort throughout the film; a female lead whose misty-eyed expression never changes either; and, in the end, a love story we've seen hundreds of times instead of the unique pay-off of that premise that we've all been waiting for.

An utterly forgettable film with a clear lack of inspiration and audience. Given the general flavor given to various Beatles media over the past decade, I would think a modern tribute of this caliber would produce a fun visual experience at the very least. Instead, Yesterday is content showing little and saying even less.
