New Hymn To Freedom, the English trio’s second album, is a remarkably lucid 45 minutes of spontaneous composition, a civilization of sound and emotion conjured from nothing more than the in-the-moment interplay between keyboardist Luke Abbott, saxophonist Jack Wylie, and drummer Lawrence Pike.

This is a superb album by three supremely talented musicians. More than that, it is an ideal reminder of the perfection that--even in today’s digital climate--can still be reached through letting three such talents simply play in a room together. Undoubtedly one of the true highlights of 2018.

The result is that rarest of things: an improvised album that sounds so perfect, you’d think it was all planned.

With no grounding bass, the groove is understated on a 13-minute title track that imperceptibly limbers from low-end oscillations and primitive pitter-patter into a billowing, blazing free jazz-prog odyssey in its own distinct dimension. Szun Waves sweep you into it. [Nov 2018, p.95]

If the album feels a little like it’s beginning to run out of ideas by the end of its 45 minutes, the audacity of its central aesthetic propels it to some dizzying heights along the way. [Oct 2018, p.62]

[The title track is] a challenging conclusion to a beautifully crafted, exploratory piece of work.

At their best, Szun Waves jams come as swells, with a power that is hard to dismiss, regardless if you can see their intentions from a click away.

The trio is often content to hover, swirl, and dissolve without resolution, saving only the last quarter of the 12-minute title cut for a truly needling rhythm and Wyllie's primal squeal.

Jack Wyllie's sax and Laurence Pike's drumming keep the feel raw and live throughout. [Oct 2018, p.89]
