Her quick turns of phrase and penchant for punctuating moments of self-doubt with colorful bits of impressionistic flair and left-field melodic rejoinders invoke names like Kate Bush, Nick Drake, and Sandy Denny, but the truth is, she's been perfecting her particular brand of moody, bucolic baroque pop for over two decades now, and with the marvelous In Search of Harperfield, that work has finally paid off.

It probably won’t break her out of the cult status in which she’s often resided, but for those who seek it out, it will prove an immensely rewarding listen.

There's no happy ever after, of course, but at least this excellent record has come out of the darkness. [Mar 2016, p.92]

What holds it all together—besides the thematic unity--are Pollock’s vocals, which are clear, unaffected and emotive throughout. [No. 128, p.59]

Harperfield shines brightest when Pollock allows big emotion to weigh her tempo down.

Another excellent album from Emma Pollock. Not a dog on the whole album, though the final track is a bit tedious until the last minute whereAnother excellent album from Emma Pollock. Not a dog on the whole album, though the final track is a bit tedious until the last minute where it starts to become interesting. From the Delgados to the Burns Unit to her solo work she's maintained an impressively high standard, and this is possibly her best. And that voice.... I could listen to it all day. It's always understated, but it's so consistent and effortless. A bit like Dusty Springfield. Full Review »
