A deep and truly fantastic album from Kendrick. Kendrick brings a unique sound to this album and does not focus on the generic topics that rappers bring up and instead brings up real social issues. This album might not be for everyone, but the quality of this album is clear if you have an ounce of tone awareness.

    DAMNNN GOOD!!

Kendrick Lamar really outdid himself on this album proving why he is one of the best rappers of this generation. The Highlights of this album is Humble DNA, Element, Love and God. Some of the tracks were a bit boring and sometimes his rhymes go over your head. But DNA HUMBLE and ELEMENT and LOVE are very addictive with flawless production make up for those songs.

"DAMN." isn't as conceptual as Kendrick Lamars last two records. It's shorter, more scattered and seemingly less grand. After the epic "To Pimp a Butterfly", it may have been the only logical step to make a more stripped down, easily digestible album, relying more on contemporary hip hop production than TPABs Jazz and Funk influenced sound.
Kendrick seems as conflicted as ever on this
"DAMN." isn't as conceptual as Kendrick Lamars last two records. It's shorter, more scattered and seemingly less grand. After the epic "To Pimp a Butterfly", it may have been the only logical step to make a more stripped down, easily digestible album, relying more on contemporary hip hop production than TPABs Jazz and Funk influenced sound.
Kendrick seems as conflicted as ever on this album, and the lack of a strict concept reflects that. Sure, there seem to be track pairings that contrast each other ("LOVE." and "LUST." for example), and similar themes and phrases appear throughout the album (plus there's this whole "play the album in reverse" thing), but anyone who thinks there is a story like in "good kid, M.A.A.D. City" or an overall theme and idea like on TPAB is really reaching.
That doesn't mean it's a bad album though. Sure, tracks like "GOD.", "LOYALTY.", "YAH." and "LOVE." seem kind of simple when compared to Kendricks usual ambition, but they're still well-produced, earnest and lot of fun.
No, "DAMN." is actually a great album. Tracks like "DNA.", "ELEMENT." or "HUMBLE." are total bangers, letting everyone know who's the king of rap right now. "FEEL.", "LUST." and "XXX." express a lot of the internal conflict that Kendrick is going through. He doesn't seem to be one hundred percent comfortable with the saviour role that was attributed to him after TPAB. He's only a human, at times flawed, undecided and insecure. These sentiments also reflect on "FEAR." and "PRIDE.", both of which are among the best tracks he's ever released, especially the first, which is a 7-minute masterpiece of a conscious rap song that has rightfully been described as the centerpiece of the album. The album closes with the fantastic "DUCKWORTH.", which tells the true (?) story of how Kendricks father and Top Dawg, TDEs label boss, met eachother, which set the table for Kendricks career.
It goes without saying that all of these tracks feature great production and seemingly effortless fantastic rapping by Kendrick Lamar, even if it all doesn't seem to fit together as well as the music on his last couple of albums did.
Maybe that's intentional, as "DAMN." shows Kendrick maybe at his most conflicted and unsure. Whatever he might feel, the album is another victory lap for him, containing his biggest singles and outselling Drake. Kendrick Lamar isn't the messiah, but he's the world's greatest rapper.

I really really REALLY want to give this album a 10/10, trust me. I love DUCKWORTH., DNA., and LUST. a lot! Plus, this album got me into some of Kendrick Lamar's other classics.

And if you listen to it enough you can appreciate how great the songs really are and the story they tell. And that story is also very different if you listen or the collectors edition (the album but in backwards order), that puts DUCKWORTH. first and BLOOD. last, making his death seem useless in BLOOD, and also having the first lines of BLOOD. as the last lines of DUCKWORTH. makes the album come into full circle.

But there's just two songs that *really* put me off.

HUMBLE.. Although this song was the most poplar song in the album and the one that got me into Kendrick Lamar as an artist, listening to the rest of the songs on here and coming back to this made me realize it was the worst song in the album

LOYALTY.. At the beginning of the song its really off putting, Kendrick opens sounding like a goat. And this song in its whole is just feels like a regular rap with a singer in it and it gets very boring to listen to after a while.

Also not that I have a problem with this song, but sometimes I end up skipping over FEAR., whiter its just started or I'm halfway through it. The fact that its 7 minutes long makes it very repetitive or boring to listen to. This is my third least favoritism song in the album, but I usually don't have a problem with it

DAMN. is not nearly as great as Kendrick Lamar’s two previous albums but it is still far better than most music related. It is much more commercial and it is harder to decipher than TPAB but the lyrics, production and themes are still on point. DUCKWORTH is one of the greatest songs of all time in my opinion, describing fate and how if one thing had not happened in Kendrick's life, he would have never become the incredible rapper we know today. Overall this album is extremely introspective with tracks like DUCKWORTH, FEAR, and FEEL, with the latter being the most introspective, describing his issues with the system and the lack of care for him personally from his fans and critics alike. The only thing holding this album back is the very commonly liked track on this album, LOVE. It lacks substance and while it is a beautifully composed song, it just doesn't fit on this album for me. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Unlike that **** who gave this album a 3 and **** for a few minutes in a way that basically showed that he knew absolutely nothing about hip hop, I gave this album a 8. I was pretty pleased with this album and felt that it was another great album from a great artist. However, I wasn't completely content with this album as it got a very low score in comparison to my 10/10 for "To PImp a Butterfly." I list the bad first to get it out of the way and then go through all of the good.

    The Bad:
-The U2 Song. I'll admit that I being somewhat of a U2 fan was happy to see the effort on Bono and the gangs' part to try and bring their talents to a new genre. However, that attempt honestly fell flat and this was by far the least memorable and direct track on the entire LP.
-The Kid Capri **** I respected Kendrick's attempt to honor the greats, but Capri's vocal parts are kinda annoying. The **** at the beginning of yah is unbearable and I found myself skipping him in subsequent listens. Definitely a dumb production decision.
-This isn't really a bad thing necessarily, but I can complain anyway. Unlike on Buttefly (for short), I felt constantly that my lack of understanding about Christianity (I'm Jewish) and my lack of hip hop history was a negative. I don't really think this is necessarily a bad thing, but I felt as if I couldn't enjoy the album as much as the easily accessible (at least idea wise) as well as educational "To Pimp a Buttefly"

Okay! Now that thats over, lets get onto everything I loved and boy was there a lot.

The Track Blood- My god was this a way to open this album. Kendrick seems to be really good at opening an album with untraditional ideas and this track certainly is very out there. The Gun shot at the end of the song and fox news sample were so perfect and I loved how he constantly dissed them throughout the whole album. This track vocals and all is **** amazing. SO AWESOME

DNA- This track is one of the first times that Kendrick has really spoken proudly about his Black Heritage and I loved every minute of it. I personally prefer the political message stuff that Kendrick puts out and this song did that really well. Again just loving the fox news bashing going on here

YAH- I really wasn't that big of a fan of this track. However, I liked how Kendrick decided to go somewhere different with it and it keeps the fox bashing going strong.

ELEMENT- I was pretty pleased with this track. I think that the chorus was a jab at Drake who I happen to dislike strong and I liked the feel. It was sorta easy to connect with although I felt like he lost me at some points.

FEEL- For an emotional Kendrick song, I was actually kinda fond of this track. He looked into his isolation and out came a beautiful message. Not much else to say but good job.

Loyalty- This **** track. Rhiana is kinda like raps good luck charm as everything she does seems to be amazing. This track is such an amazing track.

Unfortunately, the cohesiveness that we know Lamar for (from both GKMC and TPAB) has been sacrificed for -a more anthology-like album exploring the creator's psyche.

I really, really like this album. But there's also plenty of things I miss. Perhaps what bothers me the most, is that for me personally it sounds less original than Lamar's previous efforts. TPAB reminded me of no other artist, but unfortunately, when listening to DAMN. various rappers come to mind. 'LOVE.', a collaboration with Zachary, is undoubtedly influenced by modern pop rap. Even when intended as a satirical effort, DAMN. still makes Lamar the influenced, whereas in 2015 he proved himself the influencer without question.

Kendrick's "DAMN." is lyrically stellar, sonically rich and wrapped in a meticulous and thoughtful concept. I appreciate his experiments on this project, although it has not aged as well as I originally thought it would. Still, it is a terrific addition to an already stellar discography.

This album switches from hard hitting tracks full of bars like DNA (best track on the album IMO), and slow, emotional tracks like FEEL. and LOVE., which once again shows Kendrick's musical versatility. Kendrick changed up his sound and approach, and brought a fresh, punchy delivery. Don't get me wrong, I think they're decent tunes, and were probably great career moves, but the lyrics and hooks felt like pandering to radio.

A lot of fans lost interest in Kendrick because TPAB was too intellectual and didn't have enough bangers. All in all, I think this is an awesome album, and was the album Kendrick needed to stay relevant, win back some of his basic B*tch fans, and prove that he can still rap hard as Sh*t

    Bad:

Two songs, but again: MY OPINION.

I don't like the songs LOVE. and LOYALTY., mainly due to Zacari and Rihanna respectively. I think they're a litte too mainstream and IMO it almost feels like Kendrick is being held on reigns, not allowed to let rip like he does on pretty much all of the other tracks ( I know, not the best wording, but do you see what I mean??)

    Ugly:

I don't really have an opinion on the track GOD., so I decided to make turn the 'pro & con' review into the 'good, bad & ugly', and make the ugly section the bit where I put GOD. .) Just a bit meh.

All in all, I love this album. I know three tracks from 14 I don't really like, but the other 11 I have had on repeat for the past week, and I mean that quite literally. Kendrick is well, well, well of all the other rappers in the game currently. For me, the best aspect of this album is Kendrick's raw talent, and how he spits bars at blistering paces on 11 tracks, lyrics which make you really sit back and rethink your view of the world ATM.

Flow is what keeps this album from being a higher score. Songs don't flow at all. Each is a single track without any purpose in the larger story of the album. Some of the contrasting tracks directly follow each other. The well-paced narratives of Good Kid and the flow of To Pimp A Butterfly disappear on this album.

I think he gained a new league of fans that might not necessarily listen to Hip Hop outside of whatever makes it on the Billboard top 100.
While To Pimp a Butterfly & Good Kid mAAD city were both superior albums in my humble opinion, one cannot deny that they are primarily conceptual records and might not appeal to everyone. DAMN on the other hand doesn't have this problem. the tracks stand out on their own you can easily skip through them without listening to the entire album at once, each track focuses on a specific theme such as (pride, lust, love, god, loyalty etc..) each theme and its polar opposite is presented in this album in a way in which Kendrick tries to express or present his thoughts on each one without claiming to have the full answers to everything. In a way, it is an album about his struggles as a human which makes it relatable to the listener.

Not Kendrick's best effort but still enjoyable and far superior to most mainstream Hip-Hop albums that were released in 2017.

DAMN. is another great Kendrick record that sees him take a step further outside of his usual comfort zone. And to no one's surprise, it's works fantastically.

DAMN. is very good. Once again Kendrick maintains his consistency with DAMN. which sonically sounds very different to Kendrick's prior projects but is still so good. Each track has its own intelligent message which hardly becomes repetitive excluding the track FEEL which didn't quite appeal to me. A problem I have with this track is that a lot of the songs for me don't stand the test of time, upon first listen I had favourites which now just aren't as exiting in the slightest which holds and otherwise brilliant album back. I feel DAMN. is simultaneously overrated and overrated. On one hand there are people who adulate this album excessively merely because it’s a Kendrick Lamar album, while on the other there’s people who blindly hate on it without trying to understand it. DAMN. shows Kendrick trying to make an album which dives into his psyche, and for that matter the human psyche’s emotions and feelings. For the most part, he does this well. Tracks like DUCKWORTH, XXX., FEAR., PRIDE., ELEMENT and DNA. are amazing songs with admirable production and meaningful lyrics. BLOOD. and LUST. are good tracks but don’t hit as much as the ones mentioned before. HUMBLE. is in its own category as though I believe it’s above BLOOD. and LUST., it’s radio friendly and slightly shallow meaning is reminiscent of Swimming Pools, and consequently makes me hesitant to praise it too much. YAH. and GOD. are decent at best, some may say mediocre, there’s honestly not too much to say about them. LOYALTY. and LOVE. are definitely regrettable. LOYALTY. is just annoying and obviously engineered for the radio, while LOVE. is soulless, uncharacteristic and is probably the only Kendrick song since 2011 which I’d actually classify as bad. At times, Kendrick also fails to tie in all these ideas together - the album lacks cohesion at times. With that being said, the album is still full of good songs, and the concepts Kendrick explores are impactful and deep. Kendrick should have just fleshed out some ideas more, especially for LOVE. and LOYALTY. Expand

Kendrick explores more pop influenced styles on this record while keeping his experimental and thoughtful edge. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. DAMN. Is Kendrick Lamar exploring the duality of his character from wickedness to weakness. Personally, I feel like the strongest part of this project is the songwriting. Kendrick, like his previous projects, masterfully and succinctly describes every theme on the album from front to back, from talking about his lustful ambitions to his fearful weaknesses. However, I feel like that some of the songs on this album are lacking. Some of Kendrick's best bangers are on here like DNA., but some tracks seem a bit derivative to other popular tracks made around the same time. The songwriting talent shines through, but some of the music itself lacks the ambition that makes Kendrick special. Overall a solid and energetic listen, albeit it falls off a bit towards the second half of the project.

Favorite Tracks: DNA. YAH. ELEMENT. FEEL. PRIDE. LUST. DUCKWORTH.

    Least Favorite Tracks: LOVE. GOD.

Good album overall but the trap-ish feel ruins most of the songs. After TPAB (a masterpiece to me) it wasn't only about the message -which is very present in this album- but also about musicality and sound itself. You can't play those songs for someone to vibe to them. If they don't understand the lyrics they won't enjoy the song and that's a big fail.

This album production is top tier and hearing Kendrick continually change his style is appreciated, however some of the songs near the end don't quite live up to what Kendrick is capable of. Many of these reviews are typical die hard Kendrick fans who would give him a 10 or 9 no matter what he put out. He seems to always get inflated scores simply because it's new Kendrick.

If anyone else had released this album, it would most likely be the best they ever made, but for Kendrick, good isn't good enough anymore. I enjoy the themes of morality and tackling the subject of celebrity, but it doesn't match the gripping storytelling or sharp satirical tongue of his previous efforts. Damn is definitely quite good and for sure worth heavy listening and analysis, but it is a subpar effort from an exceptional artist. A good showing, but not a fantastic one. Expand

A less deranged response to celebrity than Kanye West’s Yeezus, more imaginative than Eminem’s The Marshall Mathers LP or Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter III, it shares with the former an economy of form, and with the latter two the giddy energy of an artist coming into perfect sync with their audience. It’s also a sumptuous sounding pop record, polite streamlined mass market psychedelia. [Jun 2017, p.64]

DAMN. sees the rapper make a 180 degree turn from the sprawling jazz/funk/hip-hop odyssey of TPAB to deliver 14 taut, tough and wise cutting-edge examples of what’s possible in hip-hop today. ... Essential stuff.
