The series is full of surprises ... And as Tony, Gandolfini gives a magnificently shrewd, wary performance. If, like me, you thought you never wanted to watch another Mob story, be sure to check this out.
By getting the details so right on something so peculiar and particular as this, The Sopranos actually opens a clear window onto modern incarnations of family and mortality and ambition. [9 Jan 1999, p.E05]

This is sophisticated television that assumes there is an intelligent audience for well-written, off-center, ambitious entertainment. David Chase has created a contemporary mob masterpiece. The Sopranos, make no mistake, is the first truly great TV show of 1999. [8 Jan 1999, p.1D]
No, The Sopranos is not the equal of Scorsese's masterpiece ["Goodfellas"], but it manages to bring a new spin to the words "dysfunctional" and "family," and it deserves its place alongside other HBO gems like "The Larry Sanders Show" and "Sex and the City." [9 Jan 1999, p.C1]
It is every bit as smart as you would expect something from Chase to be. It's built more on the limited-run model of British television than standard network fare. [9 Jan 1999, p.1E]
The series has some potent black humor and good acting, especially from Nancy Marchand as the mobster's mom and Edie Falco as his wife...But a gangster's midlife crisis is a weak, unpalatable premise for a series. The Sopranos makes an offer you can refuse. [10 Jan 1999, p.F1]
Definitely one of the best shows, if not the best show ever made! It is much more than just some mafia show it is also a good family drama, filled with people that u just start caring about.
If u have not yet watched sopranos, u should go and watch it now!
HBO is now (quite rightly) regarded in high esteem when it comes to making television dramas and The Sopranos is certainly one of the shows that helped them cement that reputation.
Often credited with kicking off the so called “golden age” of television the show follows the life of mob boss Tony Soprano as he tries to balance his business responsibilities with family life. Having recently re-watched this first season it really highlighted just how simplistic and uninteresting the majority of other TV shows are in comparison as, right from the pilot, The Sopranos does a fantastic job of balancing out the lives and arcs of practically every major cast member treating viewers to one of the most complex character studies ever witnessed on screen. Add this to a fantastic cast that play their roles to perfection and you have a program of rare quality.
A ok story with a great actor that doesn't seem to fill the role ****, he looks like the guy that would get slapped around in middle school and have no luck with the ladies but did a fantastic job at his role.
The story is quite a bore with nothing going on but drama, there is hardly any action and the lead character is nothing but a QQ drama queen, who cares only of himself which is the opposite of a family. The show doesn't have any good depth on their business model except show up to a store collect money. They have more conflict with each other than they do with anyone else it's a huge disappointment for a gangster film.
