For now, the show is about two people—one an idealistic newcomer, the other a practical veteran—debating, while fighting off bad guys, whether they should work to live or live to work. That’s a delightfully human (and pertinent) question to explore, and its answer thus far is deeply human as well.
Marvel's latest Disney Plus series is a fun, free-wheeling action show energized by scene-stealing Hailee Steinfeld, who joins grouchy archer Jeremy Renner for some good, honest comfort viewing.
An amazing view into Hawkeye's character, who had only been a support character. Explores his family, his mind, his relationship with Natasha... while also introducing new characters... and bringing back fan favorites.
When it focuses on its leads, it has the potential to be a relatively diverting, if airless, chapter of the Marvel universe — one unfettered thus far by the weight of Phase Four’s multiverse mishegas.
Overall Hawkeye’s not bad, or boring, it’s just… fine. It’s totally fine. Some people will like it, others might not, but it’s hard to see it arousing a great deal of passion either way.
“Hawkeye” Season 1 is by far the best Marvel cinematic universe live action TV show to date. Some really impressive action scenes and an overall good story, but there is still a bit of wasted screen time trying to build some emotional core that could have been handled in a more fulfilling way.
If it was more clearly marketed as a kids show, or as a show about Kate, the new Hawkeye, I'd give it more leeway. But I expected a good Marvel show that adults can watch and instead got a CW teen show with better production values. It's a sitcom without a laugh track, with terribly cheesy one liners machine gunned in every scene. Everyone has a snarky reddit-level joke even when they have a gun to their head.
