It is a transformative synthpop journey exploring how our worst moments shape us as individuals for when we are at our best.

When We Stay Alive is an illusion of a record but, once explored, an apparently endless labyrinth unfurls.

‘Feel Life’ and ‘Steady’ resolve this darkness, both euphoric and knowing - and beautiful sonically - while ‘Blood Moon’ addresses feeling disappointed in yourself, and what you need to do to push through and make things right. ‘When We Stay Alive’ is emotionally raw, elegantly presented and at many parts a real tear-jerker. Wonderful stuff.

Musically, ‘When We Stay Alive’ mirrors the feeling of physical rehabilitation, the sense of claustrophobia unavoidable on the knotty ‘Fold Up’. The second half of the album, though, strips away the fog and the anger, finding blissful moments of clarity and closure that feel like real eureka moments.

Ultimately, this album is a timely, much-needed, reminder of the fact that while suffering is inevitable, so is our resilience in the face of hardship.

When We Stay Alive represents that rewrite, but it doesn’t sound revisionist—it sounds quite honest, and often stumbles over its own pain and anxiety as it trips towards healing. These imperfections, though, are what give the record character and a sharp personality.

Taken all together, When We Stay Alive is the sound of an individual and a band finding a new purpose, a new way to live and create – even if it is within the confines of familiarity.

When We Stay Alive captures every nuance of Leaneagh's journey with unflinching honesty.

When We Stay Alive at times unintentionally underscores that struggle through its weakest moments, but it also embraces the perseverance required to come out on the other side with a renewed sense of self. Poliça sound eager to take that next major step and embrace a fresh start, even if they don't seem to know exactly where to go from here.

Revisits the kind of understated, politically slanted synth-pop that defined the Minnesota band's last two Trump-haunted albums. Nut Leaneagh also digs deeper on more hopeful, personal ruminations. [Mar 2020, p.35]

At times, Leaneagh and Ryan Olson, her co-conspirator, glance off power-balladry, but when they ditch the linear, Poliça find their true form. [Mar 2020, p.119]

With none of the material really cutting through the production wizardry, this is another triumph for texture over songwriting.

For a record born from a second chance at life, When We Stay Alive sounds disenchanted with its own message.

POLIÇA gives a little step back in "When We Stay Alive" where decides to smooth and sensualize things. Her vision lacks strength and even if she has a very clear musical concept that manages to explore for 40 min. it's structure leaves with a lot to expect. There is very little attractiveness, no intensity and the sensibility that is presented almost feels like it's not necessary. "When We Stay Alive" can be enjoyed, but more like a behind decoration for good conversations.
