Just as pretty but more purposeful than Jones' previous output, Tranquilizers makes good on the promise of Dog Bite's debut and then some.

Tranquilizers is an album that’s entrancing enough to survive its occasional foray into the lacklustre, and definitely one to cue up when the sky gets a little bit bluer.

Phil Jones (aka Dog Bite) operates in a hazy field where shoegaze and '80s goth intersect.

If you’re already a fan of 80s alt.pop, or modern shoegaze, then give this album a go; it’s by no means a bad album after all (despite my gripes). But if you’re not a fan this is unlikely to turn you, and may just make you yearn for some music with a bit more bight.

Tranquilizers is a fitting companion piece to Velvet Change, providing two ends of the spectrum that Jones has found himself in. His evident comfort with this material is encouraging, but it’s clear that there’s still room to progress for Dog Bite.

Despite a few obvious highlights and stuff worthy of mention, you’ve heard this all before and, unfortunately, done a whole lot better.

Tranquilzers does very little to reinvigorate or recontextualize chillwave or shoegaze and does even less to signify innovation on its own terms.
