Foxes latest effort The Kick is an album that comes nearly six years after her sophomore release. The album boast straight-forward club-ready dance music with a twinge of emotion. The album boast straight-forward club-ready dance music with a twinge of emotion. I found the general sound of this album to be on the generic side and lacking the eccentricities and dark, penetrating sound that can be found all over Glorious. Comparatively, The Kick sounds almost like a different artist, one that has abandoned much of the qualities that made her distinct. There are some great tracks here, Bodysuit and Too Much Colour being the ones that stood out for me, but the vast majority is dance music without enough gumption or power to make it memorable. Expand

Each half of the album ends with a relatively sudden shift in pace (“Body Suit” and the contrastingly acoustic “Too Much Colour”), and when you’re consistently bopping along to track after track (which does also risk becoming monotonous, I know) it can be a little jarring rather than the breather they intended.

Mature and focused, The Kick is a welcome return from Allen, a refreshing and ebullient collection that balances emotional introspection with pure physical joy.

This is a worthy comeback for the singer that is fun, catchy, bright and ultimately another addition to the canon of necessary, escapist music we need to forget the world’s impending descent into madness.
