Rather than a retrogressive exercise, by preserving these stories Hayman reminds us of some of the things our country has to be proud of; take Norton Le Clay’s tale of a Belgian settler (“Come all you refugees and strays, come all you immigrants and waifs”). It’s stirring, important stuff.

Hayman's later solo work has relied more and more on this type of historically oriented conceptualism, with the Thankful Villages project being among the most unique offerings of his career. Like the first volume, this set is a warmly captured and richly envisioned endeavor that is unlike anything else in pop or folk music.

The music is charming, if a little simplistic at times. [Aug 2017, p.94]

Its moods are wide. There are strains of folk tunes on Tellisford, retro-by-numbers electronica on Cundall and Woolley, and more conventional songs, which come alive with guest vocals.

The veteran indie musician cannot ditch his knock-kneed approach, honed over 15 solo albums and four in Hefner. Folk, like rural life, can be red in tooth and claw; Hayman’s pastel jingle-jangles ill serve his rich sources.
