  1. Overall, 'Road Rock Vol 1' is a tad sloppy and definitely no match for 'Live Rust', still Young's finest live album. That said, it's crudely compelling and with the exception of disappointing newie 'Fool For Your Love', further affirmation that this grizzled vet remains at the pinnacle of his considerable powers.
  2. Mojo

Equal parts tantalising, frustrating, and riveting. [Jan 2001, p.106]
  3. Select

With 35 other albums to choose from, this is hardly a good starting point. But for diehards there's further proof that Young has neither burned out nor faded. [Jan 2001, p.101]

With Road Rock weighing top-heavy with some of Crazy Horse's finest moments, Young's all-star friends just can't punch with that band's battle-proven viciousness. Not that Neil doesn't compensate -- as always, he's top-shelf, shredding his guitar with a torrent of electric snarl and broken string.
  5. Highlights include an 18-minute version of "Cowgirl in the Sand" and a duet with the Pretenders' Chrissie Hynde on Bob Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower."

The disc is strangely uneven... t's puzzling right from the start, as what should be the climax -- a rambling, 18-minute version of "Cowgirl in the Sand" -- appears first.... The remaining tracks vary widely in quality.
