Most of all, the music is a nostalgic trip to a time that most of its listeners have never actually experienced. That concept makes Out Of Love enchanting, but it's one of those albums that mood, time, place and company all have to line up correctly to capture the intended experience.

They've left a weird, unforgettable stain on the shirt of indie-rock.
  3. Out of Love is old-timey, fun (yet dark), and deep enough to merit sinking your teeth into it a bit.

Really, no one would ever accuse Islands or Man Man of lacking character and presence, but once Thorburn and Kattner return to their bands after this dalliance, you'll be excused for thinking they'll sound a little bit incomplete without one another.

Viewed in a vacuum, Out of Love is one of this year's strongest debuts, a complete album with easy hooks and easy charms.

Mister Heavenly, for better or worse, have debuted as a strong musical voice, one with perhaps so much combined talent and perspective that their reverence occasionally gets the better of them.
  7. Taken as a whole, it's some of Nick Thorburn, Ryan Kattner and Joe Plummer's finest work to date.

Sometimes, you're not sure what you're listening to, but it's strangely addictive.

Out of Love is a fun listen, but it doesn't go much deeper than that.

The sequence of the songs doesn't do it justice as a collection, there are a couple of tracks that are dispensable and it lacks that one special song that makes you want to kick over your chair and make love to the room. But it does a lot of things right.

There's half a very good album here, the rest is just a few clever musicians having some fun.
