With an exquisite production, the album holds in its catalogue some unforgettable tunes, from the triumphant opener 'Green Light', to the infectious anthem 'Supercut', which highly resembles Robyn's 2010 hit song 'Dancing on My Own', to the Kate Bush-esque ballad 'Writing in the Dark', or the eerie and orchestral 'Sober II (Melodrama)' that perfectly embodies the "melodramatic" atmosphere of the album, a song that I love to describe as the lovechild of Kanye West and James Blake.
The songwriting on this album does not disappoint as well, Ms. Yelich-O'Connor carving quite some memorable lines in her listeners' mind, such as "I still feel you, now and then/ Slow like pseudo-ephedrine/ When you see me, will you say I've changed?" from the wrenching ballad 'Writer in The Dark", or "I am your sweetheart psychopathic crush/ Drink up your movements, still I can't get enough" from my personal favourite track off this album, "The Louvre".
There are so many lines, so many aspects to dissect from this pop masterpiece, but hey, I'm not a qualified critic, so I'll let the big dogs do their job. One final thing to add, this album has a huge potential of getting an Album of The Year nomination, and even winning. Congratulations, Ella! You've done it again!

A very cohesive and well-arranged album. It deserves all the acclaims it's been getting so far. Despite the album being great as a whole, there are not many stand-out tracks or single-worthy songs that you would enjoy listening on the radio. Still, an amazing effort by lorde who writes and co-produces ALL her songs herself.

Esse álbum é MARAVILHOSO, Lorde mudou a sonoridade (comparando com PH) e ficou muito bom, as letras são perfeitas, a produção nesse álbum está no ponto, e não tem uma faixa ruim ou que possa ser considerada filler.
Meu top 3 no álbum fica com: Sober II (Melodrama), Perfect Places e The Louvre. Menção especial a Liability que é uma das músicas mais profundas que já ouvi

Lorde has put together a very strong album. If you're new to Lorde or loved Pure Heroin this is an album that deserves a listen. Similar style to her previous album, but the lyrics have much more substance. Songs that notable from the album: Writer in the Dark, Perfect Places, Supercut, The louvre, Melodrama, Liability.

Melodrama delivers some interesting changes in Lorde's repertoire, as her songs are less about teen angst and more geared to the melodrama of relationships (see where she got the title?). Melodrama is without a doubt the best album released on this year, Its is melancholic and so strong at the same time, something really hard to create, but so enjoyable and unforgettable.

Lorde's Melodrama takes you into a conceptual party of existence infused with all kinds of intense colors and emotions: heart beats of first love encounters, blissful dances that take part accompanied by friends or in isolated spaces, the heat of a heartbreak and what comes with it; overcoming loneliness, the heartache of memoir, wishing for it all to be different and going back and makingLorde's Melodrama takes you into a conceptual party of existence infused with all kinds of intense colors and emotions: heart beats of first love encounters, blissful dances that take part accompanied by friends or in isolated spaces, the heat of a heartbreak and what comes with it; overcoming loneliness, the heartache of memoir, wishing for it all to be different and going back and making it right but not being able to, accepting reality and acquiring comfortability with being by yourself, therefore defining who you are, a self-discovery act. Melodrama indeed offers melodramatic experiences in an excellent art form: one of the most elevated pop music ever made. She manages to cleverly deconstruct pop music while still maintaining the essence of the genre, therefore resulting in unconventional pop music with sugary melodies and capturing pop beats, all arranged with the most careful selection and with high-quality lyrics that evidenciate Lorde's incredible talent as a writer. Whether or not you're going through a break-up, Melodrama suits every single sentimental individual, offering catharsis, an elixir for all the sentimental entanglement. I promise that you'll feel infinite with this masterpiece of an album, at least I know I feel it utterly. After all, we've all danced with the melodrama. Expand

Lorde's Melodrama rises as the romantic come-of-age zeitgeist of its generation, talking about topics that might hurt most of us, Lorde takes a really unique approach and makes each song hers as much as the listener's, with highlights such as The Louvre, Supercut and Hard Feelings, there is no doubt Melodrama can be crowned as one of the best follow-up records of the decade.

One of my favorite albums of the year. Lorde's lyrics are evocative and emotional, and she perfectly captures the simultaneous boredom and intense desire of youth—dueling concepts that are captured in the notion of melodrama. The thematic elements are a perfect progression from Pure Heroine, which was concerned with glorifying a set of common experiences. Melodrama, on the other hand, mines out the grief and pain that comes with the consumption and glamor she kept at a distance in her first album. The production, too, is simply top notch. It's adjacent to much of current pop, but Lorde transforms the pop formula to a new sound and structure that is totally unique. She's not afraid to make dramatic choices, like including essentially two reprises—"Sober II" and "Liability (Reprise)"—or smashing two seemingly unconnected songs together ("Hard Feelings/Loveless"). Many of the tracks end with long fades or breakdowns that wallow in the emotionality of the song longer than the listener might feel comfortable. The breakdown of "Hard Feelings", with its screechy, almost abrasive synths, pitch-shifted just enough to be unsettling, sounds unlike any pop song this year. These sonic explorations, combined with a vulnerability that her first album lacked, make this a fantastic followup and one of the best records of the year. Expand

The instrumentals of the album as well as its structure were thought to involve us in a unique atmosphere of the universe to which the singer lives and with which it communicates. It is undeniable that Lord has an expressive freedom, both musically and corporately in his work and the work brings to the forefront that particularity of the singer.

Sober: The instruments and the vocals weave together seamlessly, it's a nightclub song that reminds people that the nightclub is never the solution to our problems. The percussion is odd... but luckily not annoying. (9/10)
Homemade Dynamite: *Blowing **** up with homemade d-d-d-dynamite!* It's catchy as hell, has intriguing metaphorical lyrics, and the way it builds up only to stop for a second, and **** blows up makes for one of the most entrancing listening experiences ever. (10/10)
The Louvre: An amazing use of background vocals. The way they are bended, actually makes it sound like an instrument in the song rather than something that is there just to be a production trick. Lorde sings with great passion about how she is "totally" happy about her relationship at this point. The ending really just puts the icing on the cake, stylistically at least. (10/10)
Liability: Earlier today, this song was stuck in my head... considering how honest and frankly sad this song is, I'm surprised it even got there in the first place... I don't have much else to say about this. It's a song with sparse instrumentation, has self-reflective lyrics that actually question morals and character, and flows through verse and chorus very smoothly. (10/10)
Hard Feelings/Loveless: The first half of this song (Hard Feelings) initially starts out calm, before it ultimately explodes in an expression over how Lorde handles a breakup. The second half (can it even be called a half/Loveless) is catchy, has sinister lyrics, and has a purposefully poppish sounding arrangement... the only problem, is that it's so short. (9/10)
Sober 2 (Melodrama): Whilst Sober spoke about how the fantasy that is a good time at a nightclub or a party... it's the aftermath of living through something that you'd been hyping up for what seems like eternity. It's a track that deals with the consequences of silly choices and the questioning of more important things. The ultimate climax and resolution of this song is so satisfying... yet another explosion of production... I'm surprised that it hasn't gotten repetitive by now (10/10)
Writer in the Dark: A Taylor Swift song, that I actually enjoy listening to. With lyrics that shows how sinister and perhaps evil a former lover can become and how they can deceptively turn back to normal within a second, as the chorus peaks in intensity, it quickly quiets down and lets Lorde explain herself. (10/10)
Supercut: I'll be honest, I didn't enjoy how this song started, but when the percussion cam in, it somehow established that this wouldn't just be a simple pop song, and showed that Lorde had grown out of letting her emotions get the best of her (at least in this track) and holds back intensity, almost as if to show maturity... sorry if this song review wasn't particularly good. (8/10)
Liability (Reprise): The intro almost reminded me of Bon Iver's new material, until the drum came into the song and put me into a hypnotized trance without ever becoming an overbearing presence in the song. it cuts off unexpectedly, and leaves me to interpret the rather cryptic ending. (9/10)
Perfect Places: I will always prefer the Jimmy Fallon version, because the fact that Lorde is singing by herself already sells the song, that I believe that it didn't need so much happening at once. I still enjoy the **** out of this song. (9/10)

    Final Score: 9/10

Lyrically, this album was perfection. Production-wise, poppy without being annoying. There's not much to dislike about this album other than the occasional off-beat parts which I only dislike because of my personal taste of music and not because the music itself is flawed. Anyway, I hope you enjoyed the album as much as me (if not more) and if you didn't, I hope you are still happy about life.

Genius. Old soul reaches down to the roots and makes you understand her experience. That is art at it's most raw. Pull the tears and pathos from a jaded spirit. In 30 years no one will have any meaningful idea what you mean when you say Taylor Swift. They will know Ella.

The great order of the tracklist provides a chilling narrative and, once again, the "writer in the dark" has brought to the listeners musical quality with good compositions, adequate arrangements and a greater exploration of the vocal potential of the singer. However, the lack of daring brought the same beats and conservative movements that had already existed in Pure Heroine, which, although great, were expected to be overcome. Melodramatic in the set of emotions that are proportionate, but at the same time, minimalist and sometimes coherent in the sonority. Lorde manages to show everyone good mixes of alternative and pop, offering us, despite some negative critics, a great album - one of the best album of 2017.

Lorde, once again, showed us she knows what she's doing when it comes to lyrical masterpiece. The rhythms and melodies were new and fresh, and completely filled with emotion and some kind of contained bomb of rage and pain, that, with a lonely dance move, could blow up a heart. She brings us the heartache, and the feeling of partying alone when the world is ending. This album clearly has a bright and fluorescent way in it's path until Lorde's third LP, and like Pure Heroine did, it'll live in our minds and souls to forever. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After four years of waiting, Lorde has truly delivered one of the best
    pop albums of 2017.
Collapse
