Every single moment of Man vs. Sofa is suspenseful and exciting.

Their cover of Ryuichi Sakamoto’s ‘Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence’ feels superfluous and unnecessary. But that aside, this album sees Sherwood and Pinch take a big evolutionary step in their partnership in terms of keeping their inventiveness and the slabs of bass fresh while managing to ditching much of stodge.

At every turn it bubbles with the delight of discovery, and shows the alchemical reaction between the two studio personae coming along very nicely indeed. [Mar 2017, p.54]

The album definitely picks up where the previous effort left off, but delves even deeper into the left-field and draws from an ever-growing well of influences and ideas. It is this stylistic exploration that makes Man Vs Sofa all the more intriguing and unpredictable, but simultaneously renders it slightly less accessible than the duo’s debut.

It hangs on the pair’s innate ability to find light and space amid the sturm und drang.

Hearing producers as accomplished as Ellis or Sherwood steal the spotlight from time to time makes Man Vs. Sofa all the more appealing.
  7. 60
It’s an odd alliance of elements that seem at odds, but work beautifully together.
