    Introducing Darlene Love doesn't show off many new wrinkles of her talent, but if you want to know if Love still has what it takes to make a great record, this album shows the answer is an unambiguous "Absolutely!"

    Love comes at it like a wrecking ball, husky alto thrillingly intact, channeling girl-group passion through a woman's scars on vintage material and two Brill Building ringers by Bruce Springsteen.

    Although perhaps too much arrangement is thrown at the producer-penned opener Among The Believers, second track Forbidden Nights, written in 2009 by Elvis Costello, has a stronger melody. [Nov 2015, p.92]

    Van Zandt’s productions are similarly bombastic, which ought to work fine with his Wall of Sound arrangements, but instead renders them garish with karaoke brightness. The approach works best with the two Springsteen numbers: his lyrics pulse with longing, and Love inhabits them beautifully.

    There are indeed a few singles here that, in a just world, would put Love back on the charts, but, as far as late-career comeback albums go, Love deserves so much better.
