Dec 8, 2014Still, being 16 tracks long and Ross' second album of the year means mixtape gimmicks like "Heavyweight" ("I step into the ring/Ding! Ding!") get to graduate to an official track list and muddle up the flow. They only keep the often surprising Hood Billionaire off the top shelf of Ross releases, so bring some patience as this mixed bag is certainly worth sorting.
-
Nov 25, 2014It's the beats, the cameos and the sheer momentum of Maybach Music that propels Hood Billionaire forward.
-
Nov 24, 2014There is very little to write home about here, and for the most part it feels very hastily made.
-
Jan 16, 2015Without any truly standout tracks, it’s easy to call Hood Billionaire unnecessary.
-
Jan 5, 2015The Miami MC's seventh LP explodes with none of the ambition or scope of March's Mastermind--playing it safe, like a knockoff version of Jay Z's back-to-basics speed bump American Gangster, from 2007.
-
Nov 25, 2014The sparse "Phone Tap" tells a tale of drug dealing paranoia, while the Big K.R.I.T.-assisted "Brimstone" is a remorseful hymnal. These moments are still few and far between, and the rest of Ross' tales of pushing fall short of revealing whether his ascent to boss status is factual or purely fictional.
-
Nov 25, 2014Hood Billionaire is an overlong 16 tracks of Ross luxuriating in his excesses, including the most expensive productions this side of Watch The Throne.
-
Nov 25, 2014Hood Billionaire lands in a dull gray area between feel-good retro rap (its first two singles are the Memphis homage "Elvis Presley Blvd" and the pleasant but forgettable jazz jangle of "Keep Doin' That [Rich Bitch]") and Rozay greatest-hits karaoke that tries and fails to recapture the impact of his bulletproof Teflon Don bombast.
-
Nov 24, 2014Mr. Ross is trying hard to find new ways to present himself, making this an ambitious album, but not always one with the right ambition.
-
Nov 24, 2014For now, Hood Billionaire is a half-baked testament to how difficult it is to make great records in rapid succession.
-
Nov 24, 2014The album skips along predictably and offers nothing much outside of Rozay’s usual narrative.
-
Nov 24, 2014The disc ends timidly with two sentimental songs, in an attempt to inject soul into this mostly hollow affair.
