With Ha, Ha, He., they have refined that formula [of the self-titled debut] further, sharpening up the edges of their sound and ultimately delivering a superb record.

It accomplishes everything you would expect a sophomore album to do: it builds off the promise of its predecessor and sees a band coming into their own and developing their own unique style and sound. Probably the least expected thing about it though is just how jaw-droppingly good it actually is.

f this album is slightly less thrilling than Mourn, it's also more consistent, reflecting the mix of discovery and growth most people experience as they leave their teens. On Ha, Ha, He., Mourn do a little of the former, and a lot of the latter.

Ending on a crashing waterfall of an outro and coming in at just under 27 minutes, Ha, Ha, He. leaves the listener desperate for more.

Their second is a complex, pile-driving delight. [Jul 2016, p.78]

Mourn is clearly a band developing at a rapid pace while continuing to play with an ability, set of musical touchpoints and a belly full of fire that belies their youth.

With Ha, Ha, He., Mourn suggest that they’re more than capable of working their way through to that end, and putting the whole struggle on display with a righteous fury.

The record adds drops of depth and drama to the recipe, but the band hasn’t quite cooked up its signature dish yet.

The sonics are familiar, as is the trajectory.

Whilst they haven’t stumbled at the unshakeable hurdle of the difficult second album, the ‘Wow’ factor of their debut has since diminished. Thankfully, there’s enough youthful grit and promise on show here to suggest that that spectacular something is on the horizon.

Short and snappy it may be--its 12 tracks are done and dusted within half an hour--yet the band still manage to cultivate dramatic intent amidst the jangly guitars and posturing hooks.
