Boring af, only good song is the one with Bon Iver. ANYBODY could make this album, and I mean any random person you pick out on a crowded street. But I'm sure the Taylor fanatics will give it a 10/10.

    Overlong and repetitive.

A redundant set of songs that would have been considered average for a first-time singer, gets elevated to the level of a masterpiece for being from Taylor Swift.

And if you're really giving lyrics equal consideration to the actual sound of the song, then you're not a true music critic, anyway. Poignant lyrics (some of these are, others are typically cliche), can compliment a good song, but in no way can a song with poor melodic soundscape be rescued by good lyrics. The opposite is almost certainly true. Anyway, bottom line is most of the songs don't resonate with me. They don't sound good. And if you're a diehard Swift fan, your inhernent biases will be way too apparent to give this record a fair critique. Expand

The musical accompanimentation is hugely underwhelming. I dont care if this album was produced in Lockdown, with limited resources. It just sounds very bourgeois, uninspired and flat. Tailor should have worked with a producer like Daniel Lanois, somebody who is able to create a monumental musical body.

The lyrical content is the identical to all of her albums: I'm going to tell a story about love. That's it. She's in her 30s. Maybe it's time to stop talking about boys and men? Is she so limited in life experience that she can't write about anything else?

While I recognize that opinions vary and perhaps I just have an uncommon opinion, I feel so utterly nauseated by this album that I believe there is more to it than that. I think there are so many hardcore Taylor fans out there that she seldom gets unbiased reviews. So -- as someone who is neither for nor against Taylor -- here's an unbiased take.

This album is repetitive and the lyricism is nowhere near the level that Swifties are claiming. Seriously, is "when you are young they assume you know nothing" the deepest line that you have heard? It surely seems that way when you look through the comments on the "cardigan" music video. That aside, the music is also as bland as overcooked, mushy oatmeal. As many others have pointed out, this entire album is perfect background music. Like oatmeal, it is easy to choke down and digest -- but also remarkably homogeneous and flavorless. This album, so to speak, is in desperate need of some cinnamon or, frankly, anything.

Nonetheless, there are some merits that keep this album from having a lower score. It occasionally explores topics other than breakups and relationships, such as in "mad woman." And while it perhaps relies too heavily on them, the simple piano and guitar melodies mixed with Lana Del Rey-inspired vocals work well.

I don't know. I don't want to rain on the Swifties' parade, but I also have to be honest. If you think this is the best album "ever," then I'm not going to tell you to reassess how you listen to music. If you enjoy it, then good for you. However, for me, this is the most vapid album I have ever listened to. I am incapable of enjoying it, or perhaps appreciating it. Don't take this review as an attack on Taylor but, rather, my relatively inconsequential opinion.

This is my rank of Taylor’s albums so far:

    1st: Lover & 1989 (I can’t decide between them)
2nd: Speak Now & reputation (I can’t decide between them as well)
    3rd: RED
    4th: Fearless
    5th: Self-Titled Album (“Taylor Swift”)

I still don’t know about “folklore”. I have to listen to it more to decide where to put it, but it wouldn’t be in 1st or 2nd place.

Folklore is somewhat a nothing-burger of a record. Swift gets personal by seemingly abandoning fun (and strong hooks along with it) and leaning hard into a more minimal singer/songwriter format that finds her creating pretty enough melodies to constitute "okay" songs founded on strong musicianship, but ultimately creates nothing deep or special enough to be considered memorable. The albums tone is not diverse and the songs bleed together as a result of their similarities. The lyrics range anywhere from cringey to great, and most of the music/singing feels like thoroughly tread area for Swift. I think the idea of Swift creating a masterpiece is a novel/quirky idea to people and this well made record helps them buy in. The album itself just doesn't validate the hype. Expand

I had high expectations for this album. I love slower and personal songs, but this album is very repetitive. She could have explored more with the melodies, specially in the chorus. I still appreciate her for taking risks and releasing an album like this, with great lyrics.

Taylor Swift has given us good lyrics but the smooth rhythm doesn't go with her, that's something from Adele or Lana Del Rey.

Not much of a reinvention for Taylor. Dull melodies do this album a disservice despite some of the most mature lyrics I’ve heard from her. Exile and my tears ricochet are the only standouts from this otherwise forgettable album.

But as a longtime listener of all three, this is a disappointing album. Dessner recycles his recent tropes from the last couple Ntl records and Big Red Machine, Bon Iver's sleep apnea would probably sound amazing and Taylor sings her tired phrasing style over this ultimately bland affair. Mirrorball, This Is Me Trying, Seven, and one or two other tracks rise above the rest, but after a few spins, I dare say I will be filing this on the shelf with Lover and Reputation as records that don't quite reach the heights of 1989, a near masterpiece. It's not that these are bad songs, so much as they are the same stuff all three artists are doing, with a Swift-sized budget. Listen to Light Years, Heavenfaced, Hairpin Turns or Dark Side of The Gym by the National to get a sense of what I mean. And Dessner's new song with Michael Stipe---the guy is a brilliant artist but hoo boy is he on auto-pilot. As is this album. Expand

Parece como si hubiera sacado Daylight, Afterflow, The Archer, It’s Nice to Have a Friend y las hubiera copiado y pegado para ponerlas primero.

This work has brought a break from this tense year we're currently living in, chill and soft songs with amazing lyrics on it. I'm pretty stunned with her lyrics, for first time, we're seeing a new and mature Swift. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Taylor's Folklore is full of surprises and many of them are wonderful. This album is her stripped-down, which may disappoint some expecting something more pop'y. Nevertheless, it is a strong addition to her discography.

It's biggest strengths lie in the lyrical complexity, which is not a surprise to those familiar with Taylor music. She takes you on an honest journey of sadness, regret, and anxiety with riffs and runs that end in a rhyme ever-surprising and clever. Personal standout tracks that are the essence of the record are The One (heart wrenching), August (infectious), Mad Woman (lyrical brilliance), and Peace (surprising).

Some pitfalls come from the delivery. The Last Great American Dynasty is a perfect example of a song with a fantastic theme but lackluster execution and other tracks suffer in this regard such as Mirrorball, Seven, and Cardigan. Finally, a track that should be in the top three of standout tracks but isn't is Exile. Exile probably has the best chorus on the album, but it's building is robbed not only by a very slow start but an overly-complex ending.

Overall, a wonderful job as Taylor continues to prove to be one of the best lyricists of the generation.

A modern-folk masterpiece which finds her moving from her previous pop bangers into stunningly simple yet sharp melodies, ‘folklore’ will be going down in Swiftie history as one of her most unexpected, and undoubtedly one of her best.

These 16 tracks (17 on the deluxe version) play out quite pleasurably in their entirety, the joins between Swift, Dessner and Antonoff ultimately only of niche interest. But Swift’s powerful songs reach their climaxes with bittersweet orchestrations, rather than blows to the solar plexus or a ringing in the ears. Everything hovers; little truly lands.
