Lastly, all of the songs sound almost identical, I really wish the production could have done a better job at distinguishing them. Bottom line: FINE LINE is okay....definitely not a bad record but it’s also nothing groundbreaking. Fans of Harry Styles will enjoy it and because of them this album will make a fortune. Here’s hoping that his next album is a bigger step than this since he actually have a talented voice. Expand

Pretty good sonically but lordt the navel gazing lyrics, which were probably the part Styles was responsible for.

In terms of songwriting, Styles takes a step back from his self-titled record, his first. But in terms of aesthetic and vision, it’s leagues ahead. It’s a shame the songs aren’t stellar, because the vibe certainly is, but luckily, it’s got a few absolute hits — namely, “Adore You” and “Lights Up” — to serve as highlights and permanent playlist fixtures.

Great album. He has come a long way from his 1D days. He is proving that you can make sustainable music that grows with time. He shed the boy band image that his 1D fans were determined to keep him labeled with. He has matured and is finally finding his place in the industry

Except for the song Fine Line, which is definitely an ode Lucifer with intro that sounds like satanic ritual chants, all other eleven songs are classic earworms and pleasant to the senses. I heard that Fine Line is actually a Gematria code for Lucifer, which could be true because the creepy hand on the album cover art looks like that of a devil.

This record is very unfocused and inconsistent. There are a couple good singles off the record but it lacks the cohesion and consistency in style needed for a complete sounding album. However, Harry Styles has certainly made the best music of the ex-one direction members and I am looking forward to his future releases.

Finally an album that doesn't sound like the typical, always similar sounding radio stuff. Half the album is great (Golden, Watermelon, Lights Up, Fine Line, Falling, Adore You) but the other half is either okay or not good at all. Harry has voiced that he had more fun with this album than HS1 and I love that. I love that he had fun and enjoys this new 70s psychedelic-pop sound. However, for my ears and tastes it’s just not it. A lot of hype but he really needs to work on his lyrics and think better about the deep of his work. I am seeing beauty and sex material only in a nice package of high profile producers. I can not see him properly in this. But if he only wants to be a performer and not a complete artist. That's fine.

When an artist commits to an aestehtic as much as Harry has with "Fine Line", it demonstrates artistic integrity to a high degree. This album works on every level. Hopefully "Watermelon Sugar" makes waves in the summer as it deserves to be a hit.

'Fine Line' is Styles's best composed framework lyrically talking, and every single melody is unique and groundbreaking, especially the ones that model the songs from its second half. A terrific pop exercise.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The opener for "Fine Line" is one of the boldest and brightest ways to begin an album. "Golden" is a very summer-driven song as is it's following track, "Watermelon Sugar." While the second track isn't as huge as the first (or any of the following), the brassiness of the two share the closeness and comfortableness to come throughout the record. Following is the 80's synth-like"Adore You" which is one of the best tracks from the album. This latest single and "Lights Up" play off one another well in the track-list and really bring out some of the psychedelia on the album. Starting at "Cherry" is where it really begins to get good. Harry talks about his previous lover leaving him for someone else which is a huge move. This beautiful acoustic-ambient track does really well and is followed by the heartbreaking ballad, "Falling." "Falling" is a song many people will fall in love with and not only due to its very home-hitting lyrics. The gangster-theme (ish) track, "To Be So Lonely" follows in three minutes where Harry owns up to more of his antics but also showcases his sassy side. Something about this track strikes me wonderfully. The first six-minute track, "She" comes after and paints a pretty sexual picture. This song is very Prince like with hints of Pink Floyd and Bowie - as did his first album. "Sunflower, Vol. 6," the arguably most psychedelic song on this album tells a pretty cute story where Harry personifies a lover as a sunflower. Follows is the indie folk "Canyon Moon" which seems to follow up on "She," telling of the "kids at school." "Treat People With Kindness," which seems like The Temptations and The Beatles collaborated, is a pretty pop-rock anthem with a nice telling, dark message. Finally, the album concludes with another 6-minute jam. Title track "Fine Line" leaves Harry - and listeners - with hope in following relationships. The "We'll be a fine line / We'll be alright" refrain is said many times throughout, forcing one to believe it -will- be okay. Overall, "Fine Line" is an indie-psychedelic breakup album with insight into Harry Styles' personal life which is the perfect way to end 2019, and the decade. Expand

In most tracks, Styles’ lyricism only revolves on the surface, often to never giving depth. The production is seamless though, has the weight that he could carry with his vocal stylistic, but it’s not enough. And it’s always the case, the saving grace of every track is either Styles’ writing, execution, or production—but all three aren’t present in one track, and it’s quite disappointing. In most tracks, Styles’ lyricism only revolves on the surface, often to never giving depth. The album is completely experimental but cohesive. Styles tries bring us some state of mind filled with peace and love, while you're enjoying an amazing golden hour by the beach, sipping some beers and think how gorgeous life can be when you already had tried love someone who's far away from you. Tracks like Golden, Sunflower Vol 6 and Adore You define this body of work, for me.

"Adore You" is a passionate longing for something that won't work so rather than commit to it he revels in enjoying it's luxury. His first number 1 with a chorus that smart it's no surprise it took over the charts. In what I see to be the only misstep "canyon moon" Harry still sounds good but the song is empty, just words set to song without the personality that reinforces the strength his performances. The fun self depreciating "to be so lonely " is a short lived groove bound for many shower karaoke's. But out of all this and maybe his discography is the grabd title track. Omg i cannot stress the tracks draw. It's lyrics guilt and regret feel grown up and the instrumental build up and eventual catharsis (with trumpets even!) comes exactly when you need it. "Fine Line" feels more pop and commercial than his previous album. This, however, doesn't mean it isn't good. The album is very enjoyable and playful. It truly feels that he has taken the best of his One Direction days and all what he has learnt this few years as a solo artist. While his debut album felt a bit monotone, "Fine Line" brings a lot of joy and emotion to the listener. It truly feels like a nice and confident evolution for the singer but still on his way to define himself and his music. The use of a gospel choir, intelligent harmonies and good production makes the album a must for pop-rock music lovers.

This album is so good. I was blown away by the production and vocals. The idea or concept behind the songs and their overall atmosphere it created was mind blowing. The instruments in the album are very authentic and league of its own. Harry Styles has improved lyrically and shows raw human emotions that we all have felt. I'm very impressed with this album. this album is amazing. harry has evolved a lot since one direction and is probably the one with most mature songs. he puts his emotions on the album and has a great vocal. this man is one of the most talented of our generation and deserves more visibility.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

This albums gives me peace, which I need. He really knows what he is doing. It has amazing songs and some other fillers, which are not bad. Now, I would love to hear a more modern Harry Styles.

this man is EXTREMELY overrated. he is the definition of white mediocrity. all of the songs on this album sound like something i’ve already heard before. the majority of the people that listen to his music are his fans who mostly listen to mainstream pop so for them, this album seems revolutionary. but for me, who listens to music from almost every genre, this album is nothing special.

FINE LINE, me surpreendeu, não curti a vibe do primeiro álbum HARRY STYLES, porém Fine Line veio mais animado e pop. Minha música favorita é ADORE YOU.

    No.

Free of the shackles that hobbled his debut, Styles manages to show more of his personality here, especially on the Vampire Weekend-style Sunflower, Vol. 6. It's just a shame he can't quite keep up with his ambition. [Feb 2020, p.110]

Fine Line is entirely inoffensive, but it’s also open-ended, and maybe those questions are the reward. Maybe Harry Styles just wants to keep us guessing.

Fine Line proves that the musician has absorbed the best lesson passed down by California’s great musicians: Don’t be afraid to take chances within a folk- or pop-rock framework, as that’s how you create iconoclastic music that endures.
