On her new album, Eve, she explores a lineage of black female icons in a way that is both tender and compelling. ... The overarching sound, production and instrumentation on Eve are outstanding. ... Nina Simone said an artist’s duty, “as far as I’m concerned, is to reflect the times”. This is precisely what Rapsody has done – in the most resonant way possible.

The 16-track potent lyrical adventure is peppered with countless poetic musings masquerading as seamless Hip Hop tracks, easily solidifying Rapsody’s musical legacy.

While nothing here is quite as creative as Laila standout "Jesus Coming," the MC's lyrical marksmanship, top-tier mike command, and service to her people and culture are indisputable.

Rapsody succeeds in crafting a love-letter to the oft-overlooked, oft-denigrated minority that is the Black female.

Eve is more than a sign of the times. Easily one of the best rap records of the year, it’s the sound of a skilled artist becoming a vital one, and asserting her place not only in the genre but in the world.

There are solid guest turns from newcomers such as New York rapper Leikeli47 as well as legends D’Angelo and GZA. But Rapsody herself is the undisputed star, offering up empowerment in droves on the catwalk-worthy Tyra (“damn I’m stunning”) and Serena, an ode to grafting hard for your fortune.

9th Wonder evolves with Rapsody here, perhaps out of necessity, as her raps continue to expand in force and scope. Alongside Eric G, Nottz, and Khrysis, the other in-house producers at his label, Wonder assists her in reaching new places.

It’s one thing to rap well, it’s another thing to rap well and have something to say. However rapping well, having something meaningful to sayIt’s one thing to rap well, it’s another thing to rap well and have something to say. However rapping well, having something meaningful to say and still managing to make good music is rare and for that I’m already saying album of the year. This is as great an album as you’ll ever hear. The fact that she has GZA, D’Angelo and references Things Done Changed on one song shows the amount of dedication Rapsody has towards making a Quality Hip Hop product. The homage she pays to woman on this album is a true indicator of how much she recognizes the importance of being able to use your voice in hip hop to not just entertain but to speak to the community and inspire change. She absolutely Murdered it. Full Review »
