The music on Dove finds a band not only reinvigorated, but also taking enormous pleasure in its activities. [Jun 2018, p.91]

A little indie olive branch, Dove is as welcoming as it is welcome. [Jul 2018, p.108]

It sounds, to its considerable credit, very much like the record that might have followed. [Jun 2018, p.24]

Dove’s punchy ruefulness benefits from sparkling production by Tom Gorman and Paul Q. Kolderie, with whom Donelly has been working since her time in Throwing Muses.

One might reasonably expect that a more mature edition of Belly would seem less fiery than what they delivered back in the day, and the craft of this album is all one could hope for, but there's a bit too much drift and not enough clear focus for Dove to qualify as a true return to form.

Dove is an album of texture--there is nothing as immediate as “Feed The Tree” or any of Star’s off-kilter, head-rush singles and there is nothing as hooky and bright as King’s “Superconnected”--there are layers and copious amounts of digging involved here.

It's a comfortable return for a band that didn't worry itself with fitting into a particular pop or rock moment back in the day, and still had enough in common to make meaningful, quality music.

Belly might take a more conventional approach to their music now, but Dove proves it can still take flight.

As a rule, Dove meshes into a good album that might be accounted a small disappointment if this was 1995, but is a pretty spectacular accomplishment for a group of semi-retired musicians in their fifties.

Upbeat episodes are outweighed by melancholic drama. [Jun 2018, p.88]

Although there mightn’t be a Feed The Tree or Super Connected to be found this time round, Dove is a coherent collection that retains Belly’s essence while acknowledging the passing of nigh-on a quarter of a century.

Shaving a few of the middling cuts like “Heartstrings” and “Stars Align” would have helped the album overall, as Belly’s comeback songs runs together in a cranky sea of relationship angst.
