This album is lyrically so beautiful and poetic. the vibes are immaculate, the record is very much separated into 2 parts, the first being real slow, but not too slow, with beautiful chords and the second part (my fav) who has more rhythm and energy. i loved it sm 100% would recommend, i'm starting to adore Lana

The lyrics in this album are impeccable, they are all beautiful, touching, well-thought and brilliant. The melodies all match with the story that she's trying to tell and at the same time give a huge atmospheric feeling. All of that solidifies Lana as one of the best artists alive, and the greatest american songwriter.

Lana Del Rey confidently and correctly argues that "the culture is sick." What she doesn't know is that she may just be the antidote.

Lana Del Rey confidently and correctly argues that "the culture is sick." What she doesn't know is that she may just be the antidote.

Over the course of her shortest and most daring LP to date, she extends (and somehow improves) upon the sonic landscape and mythos that has long characterized her brand. Produced by Jack Antonoff, 'Chemtrails' sees Del Rey at her most vocally experimental and arguably her most vulnerable. Whereas 'Norman **** Rockwell!' explored America's neurosis through the prism of bad relationships and the dying embers of an America that never really was, 'Chemtrails' finds her looking back, but not backwards. She ponders the self-cannibalizing nature of fame and rejects that possibility altogether, as she does in "Dark But Just a Game," which may be her best middle finger to critics since "Money Power Glory" from 2014's 'Ultraviolence.' In 'White Dress,' she harkens back to the Lizzie Grant days, when she "felt free" and "like a god." Who could blame her? She is, as Pitchfork argued, one of America's greatest living songwriters. Few artists have inspired a following as passionately devoted as she, and far fewer have managed to enjoy critical and commercial success by rejecting many of the strictures of traditional pop radio.

What's more, she has refused to pigeonhole her artistry into simple confines, curating an artistic vision that, like Joni Mitchell before her, looks beyond the social categories (race, gender, etc.) that inform music elsewhere. She sees beyond them when many hold to them. It's an old move that would have been innocuous in the pre-woke world, but it's that commitment to uninhibited artistic exploration--the sweeping soundscapes, the wry lyrics, her deconstruction of the American dream, her interrogation of complicated reciprocal love--that positions her as one of the greatest musical artists of the contemporary era.

'Chemtrails' could easily have emerged from the sunniest hues of the early 1970s in California's Laurel Canyon (although one does note the 3 seconds of auto-tune in "Tulsa Jesus Freak"). Del Rey makes no apologies. She name-drops Joni Mitchell, Stevie Nicks, and Joan Baez. With the magisterial 'NFR!' under her belt, the move comes off more like a self-acknowledgement of her own talents instead of a superfluous self-congratulation.

'Chemtrails' is a remarkable achievement, made, according to Antonoff, in the quiet moments following the completion of 'NFR!' One could argue that it's the latter's sister record. In 2019, Del Rey unpacked the chaos of the United States, synthesizing the uncertainty, frustration, apathy, and incredulousness into a sonic and lyrical arc that was northing short of anthemic. Here, she shifts geographically to the midwest, and with that pivot, she relies on sparse instrumentation to complement her self-introspection. There's defiance in those internal explorations, and a wanderlust, too. That tension guides us along.

A stunning cover replete with layered harmonies, "For Free" (a Joni Mitchell original) thematically honors the album's opening song, and with that it brings us full circle. "Who is Lana Del Rey," critics have asked since her debut a decade ago. Is she manufactured? A hoax? Is she even serious? Come now.

'Chemtrails' gives us the answer: Lana Del Rey is whoever the hell she wants to be.

"It's dark but just a game."

Coming out of Norman F*cking Rockwell, I had a lot of expectations. Not only was NFR the renewal I waited for since Honeymoon (I didn't like Lust For Life more pop-ish influences very much) but it quickly became my favorite album of all time. It accompagnied me in a suicide attempt, a breakup, a recovery and the pandemic.

Whilst NFR sounds like a late-august love letter for Southern California and it's small towns like Topanga, Calabasas and Malibu and everything that goes in the alleys that populate those, Chemtrails over the country club sounds and feel like a journal in the unknown of middle-america, red states and bible belt. Right off the bat, White Dress welcomes you in a violent, heart-wrentching way, Lana's rambling about the time she was 19, carefree, bussing tables at Ruby's. What else can be said about that superb introduction? It surpassed my favorite opener, "Cruel World" (from Ultraviolence, 2014) and is one of Lana's most complex and personnal song along with Mariners Appartment Complex.

Most of the first tunes are really good, although Tulsa Jesus Freak falls under the underwhelming category - with White Mustang (from L4L) and Guns N' Roses (UV) - with autotune embelishements i don't care for. I will say that Lana repeating "White hot forever!' sounds beautiful and haunting. It saves the song.
And this is the problem with Chemtrail's tracklist; they all fall in the "Underwhelming" category up until something saves it. Take "Dance til we die" the song would be an absolute bore if it wasn't for Lana howling to saxophones in a 60's psychedelich transe on the bridge.

Whilst I enjoy most of the tracklist, it just has less replay value. I find myself often in my car going for bops of NFR (F*ck it, I love You, The Greatest, California, etc) rather than coming back to White Dress, Dark but just a game or Yosemite. For me, all of Lana's albums respond to a particular mood: Born To Die/Paradise is nostalgia, Ultraviolence is anger, Honeymoon is resignation, Lust For Life is light-headed joy, NFR is the natural balance between optimism and pessimism (about love, work and the state of the world) and Chemtrails just isn't as defined or clear about what it is trying to get from you. Is it wanderlust? Maybe. Is it Autumn settling in? Maybe. Is it that moment you reflect on the past? Maybe.

We don't know and I'm not sure Lana knows herself. Most of the songs are enjoyable, and it's a very solid EP, but it's hard to follow (rather: impossible!) the near perfect Norman F*cking Rockwell.

Chemtrails leans further into the sounds of sunny, ‘70s California - summoning Judee Sill and Karen Dalton - and it’s watertight too: her first 45 minute album since her debut. Sonically, things sound gorgeous.

Lana Del Rey's most recent release is simply impressive. She shows what she is capable of - both vocally and as a songwriter.

3rd album where she complains about fame. It feels completely ungenuine when she keeps releasing record after record and doing everything in her power to drawn attention to her. Only the title track has replay value and good songwriting. Breaking Up Slowly is average and the production ruined For Free. Norman F. Rockwell! contained some of the most beautiful pop music released in the millennium so far, and was always going to be a tough act to follow. "Dark But Just a Game", "Yosemite", "Breaking Up Slowly" and "For Free" are absolute beauties. Elsewhere, the Hope Sandoval/Mazzy Star influence is slowly becoming more and more apparent. "Wild at Heart" sounds like it could have been lifted straight from Hope Sandoval & the Warm Inventions's 2009 album Through the Devil Softly. It's an absolutely gorgeous song. Save a couple of misses ("Tulsa Jesus Freak" and "Not All Who Wander Are Lost"), this is a beautiful record. Similar to Ultraviolence, only better. Expand

Lana Del Rey has truly found her sound and im loving it!! She tells a beautiful story on Chemtrails about her life before she became famous and the difficulties that come with being famous. Its very intimate and soft. And it has some of my favorite songs in her discography! Such as White dress, Tulsa Jesus Freak and Dark but just a game. I cant wait to see what Lana brings us in the future!

It's by far one of the best albums of 2021. Lana Del Rey solidifies herself once again as the Queen of Alternative music. This album is a story told in a way that only Lana can. It was beautiful, powerful, masterful. It's truly a masterpiece.

Once again produced by the ubiquitous Jack Antonoff, Lana Del Rey’s sixth studio album is a subdued and less exciting version of her 2019 masterpiece Norman **** Rockwell. Although Antonoff’s production is repetitive and unnecessary and Lana has clearly stopped concerning herself with what the fans or the critics think, it is through this stripped back style and the more intimate moments this album offers that Lana shows her audience her true self. The lyrics tell us the story of where Lana has been and where she wants to go in a beautifully dialled back folk style, without losing the romantic melodrama of her best work. Expand

Since NFR in 2019, the expectation created on this album is, I would say, even frightening for the artist. Even so, LDR showed that his poetic sense, his lyrics, his style of writing songs, telling stories and making art all connect within this album, which is nothing but wonderful. Definitely one of the best in her discography.

It's a fact that she may never do something like the NFR,

It's a fact that she may never do something like the NFR, but she continues to show herself capable of making art and keeping a fine line between being a great songwriter and a great singer.

It’s hard to resist the sensory impact of these songs. Chemtrails picks up the nostalgic thread of 2019’s Norman Fucking Rockwell!, though here she’s mostly Midwest and more melodic. [Jun 2021, p.25]

“Tulsa Jesus Freak” is arguably closest to the Lana Del Rey longtime fans know and love, and it’s no surprise that it was written in 2019, around the time NFR! came out. “Yosemite” is another highlight, a stunning number with Del Rey’s vocals at their best. But most songs on Chemtrails don’t stand out. They blend together in their delicateness.
