This is essential and irresistible vintage American weirdness.

As serious as they clearly took their playing, the music never lost its sense of playfulness and joy, with an inviting quality that draws people in to respond to it with movement or their own instrumental contributions. It’s an entourage you want to be a part of.

Yes, it can be a bit daft, but in all the self-importance is some genuinely free, affecting music. If you’re new to Entourage, jump on in. The water’s groovy.

Written by a motley crew of college professors and white bohemians, these songs undeniably lift from Iraq’s maqam tradition and India’s ragas, from the barebones blues and brassy bebop. But they feel like composites of enthusiasms, made not with a mind for exploitation so much as exploration.
