Oct 30, 2018If you’ve enjoyed Holter to this point, it is worth investing the necessary time. Aviary touches every corner of her sound, resulting in an enchanting, if slightly dizzying, fifth album.
-
Oct 30, 2018Not only does the album feature all the characteristics that build Holter's identity as a musician, but she has expanded her vision by adding new ideas regarding progression, instrumentation, and scope. It is the summation of all these parts that make Aviary such an excellent album, and one that will be very hard to follow.
-
Oct 29, 2018It represents an astounding step forward in its scope and ambition. The claustrophobia of Loud City Song and the self-imposed aesthetic limitations of Have You in My Wilderness have given way to wide-screen, exploratory, celebratory triumph.
-
Oct 24, 2018Sweeping and intimate all at once, Aviary never settles for comforting platitudes or dour resignation. It's honest, it's hopeful, and it's surely among Holter's finest achievements.
-
Oct 30, 2018Holter has always taken pop and presented her own masterful version of it. But her desire to break through the distressing clatter of the present is what makes Aviary her most captivating album yet.
-
Oct 29, 2018Be warned: a full appreciation of this album requires numerous listens - it offers little at first glance, but the moment you surrender yourself to this fate, all becomes clear.
-
Oct 24, 2018While the world--oops, sorry, aviary--may appear to be on fire, it has always been so, and the everyday emergency in which we find ourselves is not the exception: it's the rule. And surrounded by all this noise, this eternal series of accidents, Holter the poet chooses to process it all and create something beautiful.
-
Oct 26, 2018While some edits could have crafted a more concise record, this grand, indulgent piece finds Holter at the height of her ability. Even the quiet periods are always entrancing.
-
Nov 2, 2018Aviary ultimately has the effect of looking through a new friend’s bookshelf, accessing the wild particularities of their mind.
-
Oct 31, 2018Where Have You In My Wilderness faithfully stuck to pop structures and verse-chorus-verse dynamics, Aviary appears through-composed, as though its songs were written purely according to whatever felt like the right thing to do next, and not dictated by any of Holter’s more traditionalist habits. This doesn’t make it a difficult listen, though--this is an album steeped in beauty, a celebration of sound.

The WireOct 29, 2018A record that is often overwhelming, at times breathtaking. [Nov 2018, p.55]
-
Oct 26, 2018Despite Holter's all-around meticulousness, Aviary never comes across as careful or rigorous. She engages in artful replication, seeking to understand those voices she successfully reconstructs with a feeling of apprehension and anticipation. And in the process, leaving her own imprint for others to also discover in centuries to come.
-
Oct 26, 2018Holter doesn’t drop quite enough of these joyful crumbs to cajole the listener through the entirety of this 90-minute epic--yet there remains a glut of beauty and braininess in store for those willing to stick around.
-
Oct 26, 2018Works of art like these elevate us beyond the material world, if only for an afternoon, and for that Holter remains worth her weight in gold.
-
Oct 26, 2018On Aviary, Holter answers the chaos of 21st century life by following her bliss; the results are a constellation of moments that celebrate the fullness of her music and, as always, make for fascinating listening.
-
Oct 26, 2018The mayhem, the confusion, the hysteria, Holter has learned to embrace all of it, and by reflecting it honestly in her music, she has shown the rest of us that whilst we live in alarming times, empathy and love continue to stand strong. Aviary will be a challenging listen for many, but its message needs to be heard.
-
Oct 25, 2018A challenging but rewarding album, Aviary continually grasps towards communication, exulting in common humanity amid societal ruptures.

Q MagazineOct 24, 2018It's not always easy, but it is frequently brilliant. [Dec 2018, p.108]
-
UncutOct 24, 2018There are jarring moments but Holter's quest to channel the clatter of the universe produces transcendent beauty too. [Nov 2018, p.24]
-
Oct 30, 2018Aviary is an incredibly immersive voyage and arguably her greatest achievement. In fact, it wouldn’t be too bold to say this is an Art pop masterpiece via one of the best songwriters alive—it’s just not for everyone, and Holter is ok with that.
-
Oct 24, 2018Aviary is not a great album--it’s too much of an ordeal for that accolade, requiring multiple listens to even start to engage with meaningfully. But it is, in its own idiosyncratic way, a towering artistic accomplishment. Just be prepared for a hard slog scaling the summit.
-
Oct 26, 2018Unusual yet distinctive, Aviary may alienate some but you can’t fault the depth of Julia’s grand vision for her work.
-
MojoOct 24, 2018It's all so sad, and surrounded by 80-plus minutes of restless, questing uncertainty. [Nov 2018, p.90]
