J Cole is a poor MC with zero originality or creativity. The production is a safe venture into the norm that represents basically nothing. His rap ability is so bland and has so few surprises that he becomes a great boredom to listen too.

2014 Forest Hills Drive is an album that has a very narrow concept, very dry stories, and flat out overrated. When I first heard of this albums by my peers, it was almost as if this had been a life changing album for them, an instant classic. Many praised J Cole for "not rapping about the same thing those other rappers do". As I started to listen to this album, I was greatly impressed by the choice of samples that Cole chose to use, very soulful and lush samples. But that was as far as this album went. An album that sounds like it is full of fillers, this album has no replay value. Although it sold very well, that does not legitimize the quality of the music being sold. Expand

You long for a bit more of the ardour of "Fine Squad." [Mar 2015, p.73]

He speaks some incisive truths about class, race ("Fire Squad") and relationships ("Wet Dreamz"), but those insights are too often undercut by crass humor. The production falls short, too, with dull beats to match his languid flow.

Consistent, yes, but not the king yet.
