Top Spin is back in 2024. An almost surreal phrase after 13 years of absence. And yet, through persistence and belief, the best tennis game of all time is back, and it does not disappoint. It must be said that 2K Games and Hangar 13 took as few risks as possible, by resuming the basics of Top Spin 4 gameplay. Readjustments and some modifications were however made to give more consistency and depth, and erase the few aspects that could still be improved, such as serving, volleying and a clear increase in fouls or balls going out of bounds. It was the best compromise to make in any case, as the gameplay was already divine at the time and has reached unparalleled heights today. More than ever, timing and placement must be managed to the millimeter to be sure to hit exactly and in the right place, which guarantees an even crazier margin for progress, even when you were already a top spin 4 leader. With Top Spin 2K25, never has a tennis game been so varied in its exchanges, and the fluidity of its rhythm.
TopSpin 2K25 is a solid comeback for the fan-favorite franchise. It gives you a foundation for the next years, with plenty of develop, but a nice first serve in the right direction. Visuals are pretty good and gameplay feels good. More game modes and players to choose would be welcome, but maybe they can come in the future.
It would have been great to see some sort of career mode implemented where you can take control of real-world players, but for a revival from the dead, TopSpin 2K25 is pretty TopNotch.
TopSpin 2K25 is a confident revival firmly worth the 13-year wait. Admittedly, it might not be for everyone, especially with its rather steep learning curve, but for us, that’s what we love about the game. It inspired us to dig deep into the game’s core mechanics and train our way up the ladder. We felt that competitive edge that made us want to master our playstyle and ultimately show off our MyPlayer, cosmetics and all. This is a sports game that can proudly stand alongside its 2K brethren, and one we’re thrilled to see back in action.
TopSpin 2K25 is the long-awaited return of one of the sport's most acclaimed brands and brings with it some of the best qualities that made it so beloved years ago. Still, it seems a little greedy in visual terms and, mainly, in the amount of content offered, making simplicity its greatest asset and, at the same time, its biggest limitation.
It is clearly a well-made version of tennis as a game and is at its very best during nerve-wracking matches where it really captures how well tennis actually works with its controls.
Honestly, I can’t think of a single moment I was having fun playing Top Spin 2K25 even when I was winning. Every victory felt hollow in the face of awkward controls, mindless gameplay—that somehow finds a way to be overindulgent—and outdated visuals. I know I implied that Mario Tennis prioritizes fun over technicality, but after replaying it during this review, not only is it incredibly fun, but there really is a surprising amount of nuance to not just the N64 version but newer versions like Mario Tennis Aces.
As a hard core tennis fan that has played many tennis games across the board of all generations, where do I even begin with this game. To start off the actual on court gameplay rallies are great and hitting the ball feels impactful. It is basically a Top Spin 4 remake, which is fine like the old saying if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. They got a lot of venues which is good like all the Grand Slam Tournaments, all of the ATP 1000 Events, and many more beautiful stadiums. The presentation of them is accurate.
But now lets get into the negatives as that is more important, graphics are easily a whole generation behind which isn’t a dealbreaker as gameplay is the key element but the fact that the game is heavily lacking in gameplay features and modes is beyond me. First off, some of the character models look embarrassing like Murray, Sampras, and Alcaraz as they look nothing like them in real life. Plus these grunting sounds that almost every player makes just sounds so off and is cringe. That has got to go and get fixed. Another thing is every player has only 2 outfits, 1 being their regular and the other all-white they should add more outfits per player in the game. This is more of a minor issue but the scoreboard interface within the match doesn’t look professional or realistic to me, in real life most of the time the scoreboard will show the players full name and country flag next to it. For example in this game when playing as Federer within the match it just shows FED and no country flag on the scoreboard it doesn’t look as nice.
Biggest issue with this game is the lack of male athletes, sure this game has Roger Federer who is my all-time favorite tennis player but why doesn’t this game have Rafa Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Bjorn Bjorg, Jimmy Connors, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Casper Ruud, Jannik Sinner, Alexander Zverev? The list goes on and on, I don’t know what were they thinking. So many missed players. Take a look at Tennis World Tour 2 that game has a great roster despite the overall game not being so good. Also I should be able to challenge shots within matches not sure why this isn’t in the game, the AO Tennis video games have this feature. Also there is no offline tournaments to be played as the game forces you to play MyCareer but not everyone wants to do that. In MyCareer every trophy looks the same in every grand slam tournament if you win it, lazy development if you ask me, where is the passion put into that?
All in all the game is a 7.5 out of 10 realistically but has so much more potential I do like the game the on court gameplay saves it but if they fix all these other issues within the game it can easily jump up in score. In the meantime if you’re looking for the best tennis games to play go back and play Mario Tennis for N64 for pure fun or Top Spin 4 as it still remains the goat for tennis simulation games. 2K and Hangar 13 if you are reading this take some notes.
Un bon jeu de simulation miné par un système d'achat intégré totalement idiot. Depuis quand on doit payer pourdébloquer un style de frappe ?? La carrière est très légère en terme d'immersion et le matchmaking perfectible.
Immediate annoyance is having to sign in or sign up to 2k soon as you load up the game ! Why its a demo?? Of course to grab your marketing details!
However the most frustrating part of this game is the reliance on the power bar! You spend practically all your time looking at it rather than focusing on the actual tennis game to ensure you hit the ball perfectly or as close to it as possible.
Also, the cost of this game is way over priced. One good thing to come out of this experience was that there was a free demo available to try the game before wasting your money. I'll stick to AO Tennis thank you. Much more intuitive
Although the gameplay (what little there is) is absolutely fine for the most part, everything else brings it down. There is barely any customisation, a lack of game modes, an online-only campaign, dreadful graphics besides the courts (Andy Murray, is that really you...), an online mode where power supersedes everything else and constant server issues on 2K's part. I'm sick to death of games being released when they are not ready. It's about time these publishers were heavily punished financially when games aren't playable. It might eventually stop shareholders from pushing them out early if there's a higher risk.
I'm a huge tennis fan, and when this game was announced, I was so excited, but I wouldn't recommend this game to anyone in its current state. You can tell little effort has gone into it, which is a massive disappointment.
SummaryThe TopSpin franchise returns with TopSpin 2K25, featuring tennis legends Roger Federer, Serena Williams, and a cast of other playable pros, competitive single-player and multiplayer modes, all four historic Grand Slams®, and much more.
