The programme attempts to establish that there was a pattern to Spacey’s behaviour throughout his life, one that he has repeatedly denied and has not been proven in court. A large part of Spacey Unmasked is given over to the complainants. If this documentary is indeed one-sided, it falls on their side.
Spacey continues to deny all wrongdoing, but this stomach-turningly fascinating programme stands as a devastating portrayal of the power dynamics of fame.
Spacey Unmasked is more, though, than a blizzard of marks on one side of an is-he-isn’t-he ledger. Viewers who are minded to believe what is alleged in these interviews are given a picture not just of whether an A-list actor came to abuse his position, but how.
Spacey Unmasked is a relentless series of stories detailing horrific behavior by Kevin Spacey, but it also tries to give a little context by delving into the actor’s life. Still, it’s hard to watch.
What the film made clear was that if Spacey thought being exonerated at trial would be the end of the matter, he was wrong.
