HBO released a trailer for its forthcoming adaptation of The Last of Us video game franchise, which is also titled The Last of Us. See a sneak peek at the action below well ahead of the series' 2023 release.

The show follows Joel (Pedro Pascal), a hardened survivor, and Ellie (Bella Ramsey), a 14-year-old girl, in an oppressive quarantine zone 20 years after modern civilization was destroyed. He is a smuggler hired to get her out of there, which, at first, seems like a small job for someone of his skills but soon proves to be quite challenging. As they travel through the U.S., they have to depend on each other to survive.

Ashley Johnson and Troy Baker voice the characters of Ellie and Joel in the game and do appear in the show, although they are playing different characters now. The show also stars Gabriel Luna, Merle Dandridge, Nico Parker, Murray Bartlett, Nick Offerman, Jeffrey Pierce, and Anna Torv.

The Last of Us series was developed by Naughty Dog, who is behind the game as well, with Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin serving as co-creators, writers, executive producers, and directors. Carolyn Strauss, Evan Wells, Asad Qizilbash, Carter Swan, and Rose Lam serve as executive producers, while Kantemir Balagov, Jasmila Žbanić, Ali Abbasi, Peter Hoar, Jeremy Webb, and Liza Johnson also direct. The series is a co-production with Sony Pictures Television. PlayStation Productions, Word Games, The Mighty Mint, and Naughty Dog produce.
