I'm a big fan of Red Hot Chili Peppers and I just want to say that this is their best album since By The Way but it is quite equal to Stadium Arcadium. it represents an innovation of their music after an album called "I'm With You". Great! I would give 9.5 but I can give 10! I'm with You: 8.0; Stadium Arcadium: 9.0; By The Way: 9.75. The best album is Blood Sugar Sex Magic

The Red Hot Chili Peppers' 11th studio album is by far one of their most experimentally beautiful piece of collective art that they've made. You can really hear the 'in-your-face' energy flowing through them with every track, with many unforgettable and catchy choruses and some unique, more prominant guitar work from Josh Klinghoffer. Overall, an excellent album!

Have always loved the evolving/changing of the RHCP while hanging on the melody. As the years have went on, Keidis's voice is unique, as if their style. That being said, this album is (intentional or not) is geared for the radio. Where is the edge? Where are the dark undertones? By the 3 or so song, you can the direction of this album-with few exceptions. Too sweet for me.

It's serves as an exemplary model to young artists of what happens when you have nothing to say and filter it through a concept that's been beaten to death. If I had a friend who claimed to still like this band, there would be an intervention.

I hate smart, intelligent rock and roll. Here are the 5 things that happened to them, in order of importance:

    1. John Frusciante left.
    2. They left Rick Rubin.
    3. They are not writing songs, they are writing "compositions."
    4. They got a keyboard player.
    5. They got a bongo player (WTF?)

As for the CD, I still have to give it a one, because I can give it away now.

Don't listen to the music critics. Sometimes I wonder how they even have jobs. This album is ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!!!! Hands down in their top 3 best albums ever. Maybe even #2. Just listen to it and form your own opinion (except you're an idiot if you don't like it).

'The Getaway' is very different to anything the Chilis have done before, and has a nice fresh feeling to it. Josh Klinghoffer is really growing into his role, and, in my opinion, this is the best album since Stadium Arcadium. Experimental, yes, but the risks pay off.

Far different of a sound than "I'm with you", RHCP created something of a combination of the classic Peppers, and the hit-filled pop sound, with "The Getaway". While the album overall is interesting, none of the songs particularly stand out, or are memorable. Overall the album is good, but compared to the monumental "Stadium Arcadium", it is ultimately forgettable.

Better then "I'm with you", not quite at the "Stadium Arcadium" or "By the Way level". There are about 7 good songs (first half of the album mostly), of which 3-4 are great. The song quality "fades" for the second half of the album. Best songs: Dark Necessities, Go Robot, Sick Love, Longest Wave.

So replacing Rick Rubin with Danger Mouse and Nigel Godrich was and excellent choice after all. It positively affected their songwriting and sparked a previously missing dose of creativity.
"Dark Necessities" was a good choice for the first single, but with that I come to maybe the biggest flaw that's not really a flaw of the album. I'm convinced that there aren't any pop stand out tracks like they always had in the past. So there won't be a new ''Snow'' or ''Californication'' born in this song cycle.
But as I said before that's not really a flaw. In my opinion that's a sign that they are maturing as artists. That shows mostly in their arrangements. They are better then ever.
To conclude all of this I would have to say that this album shows them maturing both as people and artists. Maybe they aren't at the peak of their career. But they never used their potential as well as in this album.

After first song i think where is classic good rock-funk style ? Ok, there was Fight Like a Brave, Give It Away, Shallow Be Thy Game but maybe only 1st track is like that...whole album will be better.
When I heard the rest of the presented songs, maybe they fu(c)nk wiht us ? Maybe they show worst album tracks at the beginning ?
Structure of the songs make them boredom, now almost all are too soft, slow with too much sleepy choruses, too much squeaky backing vocals. Female vocal is Ok, but if almoast all are same ? Its greats songs for all pop commercial radio stations.
30-60 seconds solo ? Maybe in one song but in most older stuff we have much more guitars in the first plan. Now with Josh we dont habe guitars or they are push on third plan.
    Where are funk, trumpet ?
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Yertle the Turtle - nozems-a-gogo -- to check on YT (links prohibited) ?
The Greeting Song - soft Anthony vocal but look on tempo of the song...
Sir Psycho Sexy - 7/25/1999 - Woodstock 99 East Stage - to check on YT (links prohibited) ? 7-8 min song!
And no...Dreams of a Samurai is not the same! Anthony vocal style in Sir Psycho Sexy is muuch mooore funky and fun.
Anthony vocal still has old style even on Californication but The Getaway ? OMG so boring.
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Purple Stain (Album Version) - to check on YT
"Red Hot Chili Peppers - Minor Thing - Live at MTV Jammed" - to check on YT
but the newer album less good interesting, diverse of Anthony vocal style. Where shouts, rappin, sings a different timbre ?! So here we have much regress, nothing new (like some fun of new style try to sell their stuff to us).
New album, new songs are so conventional. Refrain in nearly all songs are and soft, lulling ? Rock, funk-rock songs should have sometimes same or even faster/stronger/havier refrain.
There are no more crazy guitar riffs like Hillel, John or even Navarro created in the past. No more Flea faster/heavier bass part. Sometimes bass appear, but not accompanied by enough fast drums, interesting riff.
No more louder Chad drums. More expressive Anthony vocal ? Good joke. Trumpet, saxophone ? Sly and the Family Stone, James Brown, George Clinton..funk ?
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Good God live in 2000 - to check on YT
    Where is Jimi Hendrix ?!
Red Hot Chili Peppers Foxy Lady at Jimi Hendrix Tribute Show 1987 - to check on YT
John Frusciante and Red Hot Chili Peppers - "Jimi Hendrix Experience" Jam to check YT

Of course not all songs must be like No Chump Love Sucker, Warped, By the Way, Minor Thing, Sex Rap,
(Red Hot Chili Peppers - Sex Rap - Live at La Cigale - to check on YT) Around The World but...But they have lost their old style, someting magic. There is no more funk energy, rock kick with great riffs, solos. Even Yertle The Turtle or Purple Stain wasnt fast and heavy but was cool, isnt it ?
I was hoping for something new, not new poprock stuff. Maybe they should take to produce with Michael Beinhorn ? Buddies form Fishbone ? For eg last Pearl Jam, FNM or Black Sabbath albums still bring sth good music.
Now almost all tracks are extremely soft, slow, sleepy choruses. No more guitars in the first plan, solos, miss funky style, craziness, varied songs.Probably some people (certain people are bieber sub/fans on YT) will like it, especially if they arent interested in their funk-rock style (Brown, Clinton, guitars like Hendrix), they like all pop songs, a shame to waste their style for crap like creativity.

It has a very chill, jazz-funk, mid-tempo pop vibe. Is any of it catchy like the Frusciante-era? Not at all. It's an album that actually challenges the listener. "The Getaway", "Dark Necessities", "Dreams of a Samurai", and "Encore" are all examples of the new RHCP sound while "This Ticonderoga", "We Turn Red", and "Go Robot" is reminiscent of the band that most have become familiar with. "Detroit" is different. More hard rock than bone-crushing funk.

I'm pretty pleased with the album. Kiedis' lyrics are frustrating, though. But his lyrics is more of rhythmic stream-of-consciousness than dedicated subject, so I'll give him the same pass as I've always have in the past 15 years I've listened to this band.

I agree with most of what has been said. There are certainly standout tracks here (something that was really lacking from I'm With You, IMO). Each new time through, there is something to pick up on that you missed the last time (much like Stadium Arcadium in that respect). The other thing that can't be discounted is the way the album "sounds". The work of Danger Mouse and Nigel Godrich is very evident in this release, giving each member the room they need/deserve to shine. All in all, a solid effort and one that will be heavy rotation on my playlist for months to come. Expand

Once again, the critics have it totally wrong. This is a very solid album by RHCP. I am really enjoying it, a lot more than I can say for many other letdown albums. It keeps me coming back. "Goodbye Angels" is a fantastic track, ending with some amazing work on the bass by Flea.

The album starts brilliantly with "The Getaway" track and even gets better in "Dark Necessities" which is as good as any of their classics. However, the album slows down after dark necessities and kinda loses focus. Detroit is probably one of their worst songs ever. Overall, a nice album but could have been better.

Though some of Danger Mouse's choices may have missed the mark here, the idea and vision to change producer has really come off here, as Rubin has been around since 1989's Mothers Milk, and after 2011's disappointing 'I'm with You' they needed something new to bring to the table. 'The Getaway' has it all, a nice mix of sounds reminiscent of albums like 'Blood Sugar Sex Magik' and 'By the Way'. Though fear not, as this album also does a lot that is new to the bands sound, with such tracks as 'Go Robot' bringing an upbeat disco rhythm with dreamy synths, which pairs nicely with the bands style, the same goes for the title track, 'The Getaway' which takes an alternative approach while also sounding quite like a cut from 'By the Way.' Disclaimer however goes to hardcore fans of pre-90's RHCP, as other than in the track 'Turn Red' theres is little to no show of aggressive vocals from Kiedis, or an off the charts Bass performance from Flea that you come to expect from the band. Which is where the album has its biggest strength, in that it does feel like a breath of fresh air from the band, and that the art takes center stage over what could've been a simple greatest hits or a re-hash of past material to pay the bills. However the experimentation doesn't seem to always work in favour of the album, as songs notably 'Sick Love' and 'This Ticonderoga' feel a little out of place and honestly rather hard to listen to. Other than that the album has some super catchy moments, like the leading singles 'Dark Necessities' and 'The Getaway' that will no doubt be getting airplay in the coming few weeks. 'The Getaway' as a title caught me off guard at first, though digesting the album there is an ongoing theme of Anthony Kiedis' turbulent relationship with Model Helena Vestergaard, who is 30 years his junior. Kiedis clearly puts his feelings forward in many of the tracks wanting to 'Get away' from the situation, notably the closer, 'Dreams of a Samurai' which has as much great lyrical content as it does great instrumentation, proves this. Overall, this album isn't perfect but has enough great moments to make it a thoroughly enjoyable RHCP album. Expand

Theres a bit of superstition about this album because its different; but if RHCPs had released another *RHCP* album I think by this 13th album you'd have to suffer from fatigue. Fortunately, this is an excellent album with a huge variety of songs, lots of different styles are fluently mixed to create a great bunch of tunes. Some of the best are: The Hunter, Dark Necessities, The Getaway.

When discussing the music of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, change-via-era is often a heavy part of the discussion. Was 1 Hot Minute an overlooked gem or a disaster with Dave Navarro replacing the eccentric, mercurial, but undoubtedly talented John Frusciante? And what of the Peppers after Frusciante left a second time? It's the kind of thing that is appropriate, but can be too much of a running tangent.

With their 2016 release "The Getaway" which is album number 2 featuring Josh Klinghoffer replacing Frusciante after his second departure, they've found their groove again. Their first with Klinghoffer, 2011's "I'm With You" showed that their new choice clearly could do the job well, and while not Frusciante, had a style all his own to bring to the Peppers' music. On The Getaway, they make the wise choice of changing producers, bringing in Danger Mouse to man the boards. Some long time fans mourn the loss of the raw, dirty, hyper-kinetic sound of the band in their pre-Blood Sugar Sex Magick days. Whether it is the production cojones of Danger Mouse or just the Peppers finding a new stride late career to credit to this change, the transformation is real, and it paints a fine way forward. The Getaway recaptures some of the raw fury of their early days, and blends that with a lived-in, easygoing sense of calm and peace. All 3 principal members are in their 50's, and it wouldn't make sense to be trying to re-hash the randy anthems of their younger days. The shift in mood suits them, but at the same time lets them flex their talents. Danger Mouse' production lets this shine through much better as well - from Flea's bass licks opening up lead single "Dark Necessities" and looping along to neatly tie up later track "Feasting on the flowers" - on this album, all 4 of the band members get to shine equally. Not to knock on Rubin, he is a worthy producer, but Danger Mouse seems to get where the band is in the current day and tailors the soundscape to match with much more precision. Kiedis' lyrics are as inscrutable as ever in places, but when the rich, luscious music layered around them sounds as good as it does on "The Getaway" - most listeners would be hard pressed to worry about that. Definitely recommended.

Red Hot Chili Peppers eagerly embraces a change of sound in The Getaway, giving off a more poppy feel than in the past. To my surprise, the calmer, piano (shocking for me) vibe actually worked pretty well, and despite these changes, they managed to make their music really sound like them. Of course, this album isn’t quite as consistently good as their previous two albums, but overall I’d say that The Getaway is still pretty dang good.

I wish I could provide my entire song-by-song commentary, but every time I do it sends me an error, which sucks.

As a whole, I was pretty pleased with The Getaway. It was much different than I expected, with the vibe pretty different from previous Red Hot Chili Peppers releases. I thought for the most part the new sound worked really well, especially in songs like Dark Necessities and Sick Love, which I could tell held a lot of Red Hot Chili Peppers DNA despite different instrumentation. Fans of Red Hot Chili Peppers should enjoy this album, as there are several songs that really rock. Highlights: The Getaway, Dark Necessities, We Turn Red, Sick Love, Go Robot, Detroit, Encore, and The Hunter.

Not a brilliant album tbh. The two lead singles, 'Dark Necessities' and 'Go Robot' were great. The rest of the album just sounds like Coldplay ft. Flea. While I do like Coldplay, the stupidly bright sound doesn't suit RHCP that well, especially in the cringey title and intro track which is even poppier than the last TOP record.
