From the first line to the last, Lorde makes sure that her age leaves it’s print on her 11-track collection. Titled “Melodrama”, this album sums up what it feels like: burning through your late teens and leaping into adulthood. Titled “Melodrama”, this album sums up what it feels like: burning through your late teens and leaping into adulthood. From doing her make up in somebody else’s car, to being hung in The Louvre, and looking for perfect places, Ella takes you on a magical, mysterious experience through the wonderful twists and turns of her mind.

The opening track, “Green Light”, should only be heard while blasted on speakers, while you feel the base thumping along with your heart, to prep you for the roller-coaster coming your way. Lorde’s song writing is top-notch through the whole body of work, which is an element missing in lots of today’s most releases. It is worth mentioning the she wrote the whole album by herself, with only some help from her producer, Jack Antonoff. Some of the lyrical highlights are “Liability”, the somber ballad, written in the back of a taxi, inspired by Rihanna’s mini-track “Higher”; “So I guess I'll go home into the arms of the girl that I love. The only love I haven't screwed up. She's so hard to please but she's a forest fire. I do my best to meet her demands, play at romance, we slow dance in the living room, but all that a stranger would see, is one girl swaying alone, stroking her cheek." Lorde fools us for a second, leading us to think she’s coming out, only to reveal that she’s actually the one she sings about. Another highlight is in the up-beat, youthful track, “Homemade Dynamite”, where Lorde describes a dreadful scene so artistically and beautifully, making you forget for a second that it’s a car crash scene; “We'll end up painted on the road, red and chrome all the broken glass sparkling.” Jack Antonoff and Lorde created this album while living together, crammed in a little corner of Jack’s house, in their own mini-studio, and you can tell that, by feeling the intimacy of the tracks, and that gut-feeling you get going through “Writer In the Dark”, and energy-soar while blasting “Supercut”
The titular track, Sober II (Melodrama), is probably one of the most genius songs ever written.Starting off as a piece you’d hear in a musical, Lorde depicts the dismay of an after-party, after getting to know a room for it’s darkness and then the lights are on, but then a trap beat takes over and Lorde makes it gracefully through these untested waters, exposing today’s world for all it’s horrific terrors.
If you wanted to fit Melodrama in a category, or describe it’s sound, it has to be one of it’s own, and it’ll probably end up on top. Lorde ends her album with an open question, “what the **** are perfect places, anyway?” and perhaps she answered herself by creating Melodrama, a perfect place of sound and musical intelligence for music lovers.

Álbum coeso, inteligente, articulado e bem produzido. This album is just magnificent. The songs were in the order they managed to be so that this album feels like a story or a movie. The production on this album was great, innovative, hard, and not too experimental to me; the lyrics as well, they could emit emotions on me, and sometimes they even made me create in my head scenes of what she was singing about. I'll be honest, the first time I heard it I didn't really connect to the album, but after hearing it again I realized that I ignored too many details, it was like I had a beautiful painting in front of me and I just looked at it saying "meh"; but after the second listen I really enjoyed it and as I was listening to the album more and more, it progressively got better.

All of the emotions from a teenage is blasted in this album. Lorde captures the moments from party, broke up, having a crush... it is still refreshing in 2020

This album is great. It will likely be Lorde's magnum opus. It's beautiful. It's visceral. But why am I only giving it a nine instead of a ten. But this album's immaculate storytelling and writing are something to behold.

definitely one of my favorite albums of all time! as someone who was already a huge fan of pure heroine i didn't expect lorde (or anyone else tbh) to be able to top that but somehow she did. not only is the production amazing but also the lyrics are more than beautiful. the lyrics are probably what makes the entire album feel much more mature, in the best way possible!

There are no gimmicks. There’s nothing screaming for acceptance. Melodrama is a raw, real album under its sparkly clean production. One written for the masses but able to resonate with each individual listener.

Lorde's biggest achievement is retaining her emotional insight into herself and her generation despite her utterly transformed life. [Aug 2017, p.100]

Still only 20 years old, Lorde could have been forgiven for floundering under the weight of expectation. Instead she’s reasserted her status as today’s ultimate alt-pop artist with a record that balances the contemporary with the classic in typically immaculate style.
