Rarely do Side-project collabs go this well. Tobacco’s psychedelic beats serve as the perfect foundation for Aesop Rock’s abstract lyricism. There is little diversity from track to track but this is a perfect example of “too much of a good thing” can still be a good thing. Malibu Ken has managed to create something that is greater than the sum of its parts and is deserving of more loveRarely do Side-project collabs go this well. A fantastic album from one of the most dynamic duos in hip-hop today. Electrifying from back to front, weird, idiosyncratic and absolutely immersive. Would recommend to any hip-hop fan.

Incredible album, the minimal production really works in Aesop's favour and his lyrical prowess is top tier and unmatched as usual. 'Tuesday', '1+1=13', 'churro' & 'Purple Moss' are definite highlights.

Only gripe is, I wish it was longer. 10/10

While there are a few tracks that take left turns, most of the album follows a similar template and sound palette, which leads to a sense of sameness for such a short album. Malibu Ken is an Aesop Rock joint, which means it is worth listening to you until you decipher every pun and metaphor. If it feels less weighty and consequential compared to his solo albums, maybe that is point.

Malibu Ken is wonky, unique electro-psychedelic thunk that is somewhat pretty. It's crisp, sensational perplexity, and very hard to overthrow.

Tobacco’s beats sound like a mescaline trip through a haunted theme park from Scooby Doo, while the Def Jux legend in a different lifetime raps about an eagle snacking on a cat like a churro. Pretty standard stuff really. [Mar 2019, p.65]
