More than any of the sequels, “Ravager” upholds the mind-bending originality and emotional depth of the first “Phantasm.” From the surprise cameos by old characters to the constant twisting of dreams and reality, it’s suffused with the feeling of people trying to regain control of their lives, to get back what they’ve lost.
Ravager does have an internal logic that makes its time and subplot-jumping story easy to follow. But this new Phantasm will not be of interest to anyone who doesn't already know who the Tall Man is, or why he needs to be stopped.

The worst of failing franchise. The first two films were above average 80s horror fun. The third and fourth films were below average and lacked cohesion over any overarching point for existing. This is by far the worst. It's chopped up mess of ideas that doesn't resolve any of the mess that came before. But what is considerably worse than anything that came before it is the cinematography and the special effects. It's just difficult to look at. What a mess.

Phantasm: Ravager gets by on the power of nostalgia and franchise completion, but is a bit rough around the edges even when compared to other Phantasm films.
Phantasm: Ravager will disappoint the uninitiated, but those who are loyal will find enough to love.
But even though it doesn’t make much sense, Phantasm is wildly imaginative and legitimately creepy, confronting death and mourning as part of the coming-of-age process while also delivering nutty Jawa-type critters and blood spurting out of peoples’ faces.
Phantasm: Ravager should please longtime fans while leaving newcomers unimpressed and confused.
It’s a mishmash in which characters are thrown from dimension to dimension and from dream to dream. The main character, played by Bannister, is forever baffled as to what his actual reality is. His bafflement is shared by the viewer.
Phantasm Ravager is simply the bottom of the barrel from the franchise. Not only because of the poor story and the cheap directing or special effects but also in every way possible. This looks like an awful late night TV movie from the nineties. Near to nothing to save here even for the die-hard Phantasm fans. What a shame for Don Coscarelli. You better run away from this crap.

What a waste of time. As a child who grew up with campy movies in the 80's and 90's like Phantasm, it's a slap in the face what they did with the newest film. I can't understand why people insist on acquiring the rights to film for a franchise and then mess it up as badly as they do. The camera work is bad and shaky. The dialog feels uninspired and dry. The story is stupid, often taking way too long to actually go anywhere or do anything. It's awful and the people responsible should be ashamed.
