A raw horror masterpiece from a first-time director that deserves to be mentioned in the same frantic breath as the genre’s greats. Even the most jaded viewer should find something in Hereditary to disturb and distress them.
Hypnotic and intense throughout, the brilliantly executed Hereditary taps into the ghosts within all of us — the insidious roots of family dysfunction — and turn them upside down and all around. It’s an audacious supernatural thriller where the psychological fallout is just as disturbing as the apparitions that come chillingly to life.

Truly the most disturbing movie that I have ever seen, in the best possible way. This is a film that will stay with you long after the credits roll. Toni Collette is a powerhouse and puts forward the best acting performance I have ever seen in a horror movie, bar none. The kids, played by Alex Wolff and Milly Shapiro, are no slouches either. This film sends the viewer up and down a sickening roller-coaster of emotions that you just can't turn away from. I signed up for an account just so I could give this film a 10.

Hereditary is without a doubt one of the most frightening, deeply disturbing, and evocative pieces of horror I have ever seen. Instead of scaring you right away, the film slowly takes its time to build a bone chilling atmosphere and genuinely get under your skin. Hereditary uses its isolating cinematography, tense dialogue, and bloodcurdling soundtrack to quietly whisper to you that something unspeakably horrifying is bound to befall its cast of characters. The characters themselves are all impeccably acted and written to feel like real people. Each of the characters have their own multi-layered fears and traumas that they attempt to deal with throughout the story. The film explores how a family can slowly be driven apart through grief and tragedy as well as the horrific consequences this can have on the lives of each of the family members. Overall Hereditary is not for everyone and isn't an easy movie to watch. It is very clammy, unnerving, and disturbing. But if you are looking for a mature horror story that grounds its terror in human emotion and is genuinely frightening, this is the movie for you.

This is a remarkable, triumphant, and confident picture by Aster, who gives the film an almost meditative-like sensation, as you feel every space you’re in, every emotion, every moment of grief. Hereditary refuses to employ cheap thrills, creating its cinematic scares with atmosphere, and continuously reinventing itself at every turn.
Hereditary takes the core haunting element of a spirit with a malevolent agenda and runs with it in a seemingly endless series of unexpected directions over two breathless hours of escalating terror that never slackens for a minute.
Here’s the thing, though. Hereditary is far more upsetting than it is frightening, and I would hesitate to recommend it to the readily traumatized.
At more than two hours, it’s simply too long. However, thanks to Collette’s work, “Hereditary” is a horror movie that really sinks its claws into you.
These days actors not only appear in bad movies, they are forced to produce their own flops themselves. Toni Collette and Gabriel Byrne co-executive produced Hereditary. They deserve what they get, in spades.
Make no mistake, this movie has some scary parts, and shocking images. But it also has style, and is not just a jump-scare BOOfest. Toni Collette is at her absolute best, portraying great range and intense, insistent emotions. But the film never seems sure where it was heading, and the ending is just silly.
