This is what someone would make if Saw and Chess were together. That's what 13 Sins is. The movie starts out slow and ends slow as well. But the entertaining plot and the strong performances make it more than just a bargain theatre horror porn. When I mean this movie is crazy, it's super crazy. Plot twists, direction and story is done really well. This one really is much more than its aiming for. Providing great action scenes, awesome plot twists and a bloody 70s game show style- 13 Sins is one of the best VOD movies of the year, it's scary, twisted and bloody fun.
Some good variation on a familiar theme, as well as some solid acting make this an enjoyable experience. I thought it was well written, however the distinct lack of solid conclusion let down what was otherwise a solid entry in the thriller/horror genre. As other's have said, it appears to have been left open for sequels, when a sequel really isn't needed. Despite this, I still thoroughly enjoyed it.
What you have here is a good Thriller come Horror movie with strong acting and decent direction. Though the story is a slightly familiar one there are enough changes to give it a fresh feel. There are many films of this ilk so cliches are included, though the way they are handled makes them less discernible. Worth a watch.
Honestly I have seen films much worse within the genre than this one, although it is clear that it is not a film supported by a large studio, nor that it has famous names, it's simple but enjoyable.
The quick money does not come from easy way!
It is a remake of the Thai film '13 Beloved'. Not seen the original film, but this is a very familiar theme. Some good films were already made out of it and this one is slightly different. It is about a man who is expecting a baby with his girlfriend who he is going marry very soon. But he gets fired from his job and clueless about raising a child and maintain the family. Then a strange phone call gives him a series of challenges to win with a greater reward. It all begins with a small easy task and then begin to complicate when he can't back off as per the rules he has agreed. Now how far he goes to finish it off what he had started was told in the rest of the film.
Since this is not a fresh idea for a film, I expected the story to be very good, but a little disappointed. At least it opened well and overall first half was much better. Later the film did not stand up to what it was promised in the earlier. But kind of unpredictable way it was developed. Seeing how the film was received, those who liked the original version did not like this one. That happens all the time as expected. Even though if you haven't seen the Thai film, the chances are slim one to enjoy it, especially if you have seen and liked the films like '12 Rounds', 'The Game', including the recent 'Nerve'. Not bad for watching at once, but instead I would suggest other similar title if you ask me.
5/10
Positives: The performances are solid, early parts kept my interest
Negatives: The 2nd half, a ridiculous script, lost interest
Overview: The concept is interesting similar to David Fincher's The Game or Saw, unfortunately this falls way short of both.
Grade: D+
A silly, dumb pile of garbage. The movie isn't clever enough and becomes even more unrealistic and corny as time goes by. It wasn't thrilling or scary.
