Sep 6, 2018A great conceptual album with a huge background story, perhaps its mistakes lies in certain songs that feel similar and at times the album feels too passive and too electronic.
Maybe Trent left the rock a little more on the side and although it is not a bad thing, I did expected a darker album. -

-
Apr 11, 2012Nine Inch Nails' most ambitious offering to date, with a concept based around the future of the human conciousness we see Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross exercising their most experimental works into pop/rock anthems, a benchmark for modern music production.
-
CraigC.May 29, 2008THE best NIN album thus far!
-
-
OwenM.May 6, 2008Great effort from Trent. Very catchy album that has tracks both new fans and old fans can enjoy. He creates greats a great story with this album, those who followed the ARG online before the albums release will of course enjoy and understand it more.

DecepticonPomMay 27, 2007Could have very comfortably been a disc 2 to With Teeth - flows very nicely, even if not quite as strong a set as disc 1.

-
LucasKMay 25, 2007Sit down with this album, listen to it, digest it, then put it away in the cupboard for a week and I guarantee none of these middle of the road songs will be with you when you retrieve it.

maplejetMay 25, 2007Another great NIN release. This band is heading straight for the top of the music world.

DavidDMay 23, 2007The best since the downword spiral. Trent Rezonr seems to have got his edge back. Great CD

-
[Anonymous]May 21, 2007it's obscure, lacks the hooks of With Teeth and most importantly lacks the balls out screaming that makes Trent so damn good. He whispers on most songs, with beats seemingly melding into the same song over and over again. Let's hope the 2nd half is better.
-
-
BrianPMay 18, 2007An all out great album. For me, this is a much more exciting listen when compared to Reznor's previous 2 albums. It's on par with Pretty Hate Machine, Broken and The Downward Spiral.
-
-
RobMMay 16, 2007Almost all tracks are excellent. Trent really delivers again after his great With Teeth return

DonovanMMay 4, 2007This albumbs good. I havnt listened to a new albumb this heavily since DeLoused. If you dont like this, go listen to Fall Out Boy, or be scene and listen to indy? Sure its not a 10, nothings perfect, but it leaves every other new albumb behind by miles. This albumb has really good flow, could use a bit more variety, but it makes us for it with awsome songs all throughout.

BillNMay 2, 2007NIN best album in years. Better than WithTeeth and The Fragile (and i liked both albums).

-
-
CurtisOApr 25, 2007Hard to compare against the spiral, I would consider this album closer to drone/ambient affair with with heavy bass semi-aggressive overtones. Definitely a great follow-up to with_teeth. Hopefully Trent's new found inspiration will lead to more albums with less time in between.

tomdApr 23, 2007a masterpiece!! brilliant use of noise samples, beautifully crafted album. possibilby his best since "pretty hate machine". he makes the avant-rock and experimental work in a very accessible way. my faith in NIN is restored after being somewhat bored with his last few efforts.

alanlApr 20, 2007"9" because I think there are a couple of trax that could've been left out of the final track list but i think It is a smart political record. Not Reznor's best but the man's got plenty of things to say.
-
-
RandyMApr 20, 2007Reznor's best album since "Downward Spiral." Pretty cool stuff here.
-
-
RandeliusWApr 20, 2007Great album. It seems the older guys always fade and can't make something catchy. Not so here. Hopefully Billy Corgan can match/best this effort with Zeitgeist in July.

-
shunApr 20, 2007Why do people still want another Downward Spiral?, I would rather see something different. I think this album is certainly more mature, and lyrics are the step forward by his standard. I really enjoy this album, I like its audacity and themes, not to mention some really great music.
-
-
DanPApr 19, 2007Terrible. One or two good songs (maybe Hyperpower! and Capital G) but that's it, "Survivalism" completely sucks, avoid this one and buy one of their old pieces of art, that are actually worth your money.

V.Z.Apr 18, 2007The songwriting takes a backseat on this one, and the noise takes over, sometimes a 100%. A production masterpiece, now if the writing was a bit better...
-
-
RunDMGApr 18, 2007Too much emphasis being given to its "sonic assaults"! I find it contains some very subtle elements, both in music and lyrics (NIN subtle???) I was worried that the album could not match his courageous efforts and best intentions - glad to report that I was wrong! Best album of the past five years!
-

JakubKApr 18, 2007I just couldn't ask for more. This is absolutely masterpiece by Reznor standards, and it's even bigger opus magnum in the nowadays music standards. It's way different than any previous Nine Inch Nails album, and it's *his* best album both concept and lyrics-wise
-
-
JulesDApr 17, 2007quit comparing this to downward spiral. it sounds like with teeth but better. and the fragile came out after downward spiral and you cant deny that was better than with teeth and year zero combined.
-
-
ThomasBApr 17, 2007Not only are the songs genius, the idea behind the album is more inspiring than the shit you hear on the radio today. It blows With Teeth out of the water and that's saying a lot. Trent Reznor will never cease to disappoint me.
-
-
RyanGApr 17, 2007The most solid album since the 1999 release of The Fragile (greatest album of all time). Reznor shows his true talent with his masterful construction and just plain fucking stylish beats.

AramisGApr 17, 2007Much much better than With Teeth, and definitely the best thing he has put out since Downward Spiral. It is nice to actually get an album that sounds like a cohesive thing with 16 tracks. Lets hope we get another in two years. If anything these songs could have been a little longer and would have been nice to have more crescendos (ie: All the Love In the World), but hey I'm happy with it.

-
JustinHApr 17, 2007It's nice to see such a tremendous talent like Trent Reznor still relevant and still artistically viable. Year Zero really is the beginning of a new era for Nine Inch Nails, and this could catapult Reznor to heights unforseen- even moreso than what the Downward Spiral achieved. "The Beginning of the End" this is anything but.

Awards & Rankings
-
Make no mistake this is NIN as usual, but [it is] an effortless, inspired, and unaffected Trent Reznor the likes of which we may not have had the pleasure of knowing for almost a decade and a half.
-
Amid its carefully calibrated sonic assaults, Year Zero has a number of tracks that will stop you in yours.
-
Its nihilism can grate, but it makes an impression.
