    I cannot believe how much this album has grown on me and quickly become my number one album of all time. Granted, I don't spend much time listening to much music, but the love I have for this album is beyond anything I have for all the rest I have listened to. The lyrics are rich yet digestible, relatable and full of soul.     I was a huge fan of Section 80 and good kid, m.A.A.d city but this album is so hard to listen to. I find it way too politically themed and no fun. Very disappointed in this album.

    I loved Good Kid/M.A.A.D City **** Don't Kill My Vibe was my soothing, sonic balm for months). Butterfly may be even better. I love the jazz infusion. I love the funk. So much of it is downright gorgeous. After 25+ listens, I still haven't got all the lyrics down, but that's a very good excuse for another 25 listens. An incredible entry into an outstanding and very aware artists career and into hip hop history. Ive probably listened to it about 10 times since March and it takes me on an emotional journey every time. I'm in awe every time it gets to the end of Mortal Man.     Kendrick Lamar definitely go down in history as one of the best representatives of hip hop. This album is also enshrined as one of the best artists of the 21st century.

    Incredible Album, nothing more really needs to be said. Kendrick manage to do the unthinkable and made an album better than GKMC. No other rap album in 2015 will top this.

    I could probably appreciate the genius and the fine music if it weren't for the puerile gutter language. Even if I could tolerate the excessive expletives I could never listen to this in public or in the company of others without suffering embarrassment.

From start to finish, the album tells a cohesive, powerful story driven by Kendrick's skill and passion for music. This has to be hands down one of the best albums I have ever heard, even if I do enjoy some of his work from Good Kid, M.A.A.D. City more as individual songs.     This is the most mature Kendrick album to date... At 28 years old, instead of doing what 99% of rappers are doing, he discusses love to another extent and brings back politics in rap due to the struggles of African Americans...
    His lyricism is complex and is better than his last two albums...
    When I first heard i last year, I thought that this album would flop but it is his best to date...

    It was all good I just couldn't get into the Jazz vibe to much and also Kendrick's Verse structure could've been planned a little more but that is it liked it a lot.

    Its a pretty solid album. Nowhere near as good as GKMC imo, but its still not bad. There are a lot of highpoints, some lowpoints, and mostly mediocre moments. I liked this album, just didnt love it.

    Honestly this is one of the best modern hip hop albums that I've heard. By letting some time ago after its debut and being able to fully digest it, I can say that the musicality and lyricism that Kendrick displays on this album surpasses all of his previous material. I've never heard an album like it, and probably never will.

    I don't why can some people hate this album? This is the only good rap album in 2010s. This album is not just about hip hop, it's funk and R&B. Look at on i, King Kunta, The Blacker The Berry or These Walls, these are the album best tracks. Another tracks are good, too. At least this is the album is not talk about sex, drugs, money.

    the one thing about kendrick is that his sound sets him apart from others. there is no confusing kendrick with someone else. his second album is a solid one but i think kendrick got lost in trying to be too different rather than just focusing on the music. his first album is a hip hop classic. this is a solid release and i am excited to hear more from him in the future.

    Kendrick Lamar's junior album, is a mixed bag. He provides some excellence tracks, while some seem unnecessary and fail to uphold the album. It's a good album, but lackluster in comparison to Section80, GKMC, and Overly Dedicated. It loses it's replay value.

Kendrick has done something truly mind boggling with this album and with his entire career. His run of classics is now at three and each album is better than the last. It does take some time to truly fathom the depth in which he takes his messages and stories but upon first listen it's easy to figure out that this is something extraordinary. No other album in history successfully combines so many elements from self love, black history, and personal story. Add that with the combination of so much musical influences from Jazz to funk that somehow all plays at once in each track yet is smooth and uncluttered. Lyrically this album is untouchable from any other cat in the game right now. No other artist is so personal and yet so universal in their writing style and delivery. Kendrick's flow is impeccable and his voice is so distinct even when he changes it up for each song. The sequencing is insanely well done on this album and the flow from one track to another is perfect. It truly is an album to be studied and written about. It is a masterpiece that will go down in history as one of the most brilliant albums ever created.… Expand

But do not expecting to be hearing many cuts from Butterfly bumping out of whatever speakers you happen to be in range of this summer. This is bound to be one of those records that everybody loves--and nobody listens to.

    The album follows a similar format to his previous release, "good kid, m.A.A.d city" (2012), in which there is a story being told to the audience. While GKMC is in    To Pimp A Butterfly is the most recent release from Kendrick Lamar's FLAWLESS catalog. This work is not only the best in his catalog, but it's arguably THE most important Hip-Hop record to the genre since Nas' Illmatic.

    The album follows a similar format to his previous release, "good kid, m.A.A.d city" (2012), in which there is a story being told to the audience. While GKMC is in essence a short film, TPAB is an open letter filled with beautifully constructed and detailed vignettes that all comes together in the final 8 minutes of the album.

    While Kendrick Lamar fans have grown accustomed to his strong lyrical abilities over the years, his choices of the kinds of instrumentation that he puts his voice over doesn't always get the credit that they deserve. But TPAB forces the listener to not only acknowledge the strength of the music, but to get lost in the sonically sounding production. For all intents and purposes, this is a Hip-Hop/Rap album. But with elements of Jazz, Soul/Funk, Blues, Classical, and even spoken word/poetry, this album spreads its wings into the universal, where fans of multiple genres of music are able to not only listen, but enjoy and demand more!

    In terms of lyricism, there are layers on top of layers. Having been a Kendrick fan for 5 years now, I've learned to enjoy the music on the first 2-3 listens, and then dive in and try to dissect the lyrics. You will not be able to understand this vignettes 100% if you're not familiar with at least his most recent releases in "GKMC" and "Section.80", as there are a handful of references to both. And even if you know those like a pastor knows his Bible, you will still need to let it play out another 10-20 times to divulge EVERYTHING that the man is talking about!

    For those who may be confused by the title, fear not, because it is summarized in the most beautifully detailed manner at the end. And as many may know by now, there's definitely a well welcomed surprise guest to help close out the project.

    Anybody that may tell you that this album is "boring" or "not as deep" or even "not good as people are making it out to be", I advise you to IGNORE those people, for they are likely the same ones to defend the antics of an "artist" such as Young Thug. This album is timeless, and can be enjoyed from start to finish without ever wanting to skip a track! Enjoy!    … Expand

    Kendrick delivers a speech in music form. Bringing up the issues of race and life while using excellent instrumentals and good features worked to his advantages. The songs may seem polarizing but going deep into the issues always is. Blacker The Berry is a sort of "rant" that certainly some black people in America feel as they attempt for success. Then, I listened to it more and it grew on me. I submitted my review to this website, giving it a 9/10 stating that my only complaint was some of the production. I then resubmitted my review, giving it a 10/10 and realizing that it was one of the best albums I had ever heard. But now I'm looking back at that, thinking, "wow, that was a HUGE understatement!". This may, in fact, be one of the best albums EVER made, in ANY genre, over the WHOLE period of music's existence. This album is out of this whole universe, and that's even an understatement in its own right. I thought GKMC was one of the best albums to have ever been made, and for a while I actually thought it was better than this. But WOW!!! After really thinking about this album, I can now say it is better than any album in the world combined. And that INCLUDES Good Kid, M.A.A.D City. Kendrick Lamar spreads a message over the course of the whole album, that, while may not be important to everyone in the world, is clearly important to Kendrick - this is the reason the album was made. He really got on this album and said almost everything he could about the whole theme of racism in America. And, oh my gosh, he's done a better job of it than anyone else in the world. Lamar's smarter, more revolutionary, and more inspirational than Albert Einstein. The amount of originality on To Pimp a Butterfly is also out of this world. No matter how similar this album's message may be to some others, this album will remain as one of a kind in history. He's taking his message and spreading it over the course of the whole album like no other person in history. For the majority of this album, Kendrick is also showing that he is one of the most lyrical out there. There are some songs that aren't very lyrical, like "King Kunta", but "The Blacker the Berry" and "Mortal Man" may be some of the most lyrical songs I've ever heard in my whole life. The production here is also great too. At first, I thought it was kind of weird, unlistenable, and uncatchy: but it's some of the most experimental I have ever come across. In order for an album to have good production, it doesn't need to be all trap music or other bangers. And don't get me wrong, I didn't even love every song on here. But the whole idea and concept of To Pimp a Butterfly, especially with the ending of "Mortal Man" featuring Tupac Shakur (which almost made me cry, by the way), is completely out of this world. No one can match Kendrick Lamar's intelligence, inspiration, or originality. Not even Albert Einstein. To sum up, this is THE best album I have ever heard in a while - not everyone will like it but I sure did. Grade: A+++++++++++++++++++++++++++. Highlights: Everything. Worst songs: None, except for maybe "Institutionalized", which wouldn't even matter anyway considering some of the songs here are only important in that they flow along nicely with the album.… Expand

    To me, good rap/hip-hop vocals use the voice as a percussion instrument to organize the backing rhythms. On most of these tracks, Lamar basically ignores vocal rhythm: many of his vocals have little if any rhythm, or the rhythm is the rhythm of a poetry reading, often totally off-kilter from and unrelated to the underlying rhythm from the backing tracks. Too often, it is more like a guy talking with some music in the background.

    In fact, at least twice, including one time for perhaps 5 full minutes, Lamar stops the music and just talks. Even though what he says is relatively clever, I don't care. Even the cleverest speech wears thin after 2 or 3 hearings. Sorry Kendrick, I don't buy an album to listen to some damn guy talk: I want music.    … Expand

    Very important, deep and conceptual album, but when you take it at face value, it's still phenomenal. The only down fall is that it's fairly long. But besides the length I feel like it is a stellar album and will almost def be my favorite album of 2015.

    I thought I had heard some of the best hiphop possible with Run the Jewels 2. TPAB is even better. Lamar takes on difficult topics and delivers with the importance and precision they require. Inspiring, deep and frightening lyrics, game-changingly good music.

His different characters help him describe his changing (or maybe not that much) environment as a black man and as an artist without forgiving anyone, including himself. What makes TPAB a classic is how high it stays for the entire 80 minutes, with each track sliding into another beautifully and naturally thanks to live jazz instruments and multiple layers brought by top notch musicians like FlyLlo. This is the best album of 2015 so far and it should stay that way until December.

You have to applaud Kendrick for throwing his body and soul into the project and his passion for the subject matter and sound, but it just doesn't work.     P.S I don't want to bring race into it but the majority of this album is too much centred on race, when Hip Hop is supposed to be about bringing people together, this album sends a segregating message often with such tracks like "Blacker the berry" and the opening lines "Every **** is a star." (repeated)

    3/10 for King Kunta and the passion. But that is the only pluses I can give to this album.    … Expand

    I don't know if it's me and not being ready for it, but To Pimp A Butterfly was just outright weird to me. There are a couple cuts that I found good and worth re-listening to, but so much of this album alienates me. Maybe with more listens it could grow on me, but my first impressions aren't positive. That's unfortunate as I think Lamar has good talent.

    Not much I can say about this album that hasn't been said already. It's a masterpiece. It doesn't function very well for the casual listener, but if you take the time to sit down and listen to the whole album all the way through in order, you will not be disappointed.

His lyrics are just as cognitive and articulate as always and he expresses himself in a very refreshing way through this album. I believe that Kendrick is really coming into his own as an artist. He has always had an ear for beats as his last projects have proven, but To Pimp a Butterfly brings it to another level. The amount of collaboration on this project is staggering. There is a lot of live instrumentation from Terrace Martin and Robert Glasper, an array of samples that explore historically African American music, and very progressive production from the likes of Sounwave, Flying Lotus, and Boi-1da. This album is a "jazzy" and soulful exploration of African American music, culture, and Kendrick's view of the whole situation. Yes, this music is relatively less accessible than his previous work, but repeat listens are rewarded with the revelation of new meanings. The progressive nature of this project is astounding and will probably cement this album as one of the finest artistic achievements of my generation. 10/10… Expand

    Like many others, i was hesitant and rather shocked at the album's thematic design and tone in initially listening to TPAB through. However as i gave it multiple listens from beginning to end i realized how special this record really was. TPAB gave me an insight into the adversities and struggles of a famous black man, i never thought ild be able to obtain through music. I hope this record stands as a model for other conceptual artists, as well as a definitive masterpiece in rap (music even) cementing Kendrick as the King.

    I am all for Kendrick finding his own lane and such, but this album is so over the top over rated I do not even know where to begin. I have no problem with his delivery or lyrics, but musically this album blows and after the first listen the only thing I could come up with with was "what the hell was that".....and that is not in a good way. Horrible and very forgettable.

    I am genuinely into rap on the whole, and I have heard many great rap albums in my life thus far. To Pimp a Butterfly is a standalone game changer for rap. It's angry, it's smooth and beautiful, and it brings you to tears. there's no other way to put it. It's a masterpiece.

Everyone giving it a 10/10 or above a 5 is just some white kid who has no true appreciation for this genre, it is terrible and Lamar has found a way to slip from the previous album by a lot. Everyone giving it a 10/10 or above a 5 is just some white kid who has no true appreciation for this genre, it is terrible and Lamar has found a way to slip from the previous album by a lot. I can't find a single song where I don't cringe at least once, his flow is about the best part of the album itself and even then he's sorely lacking. His lyrics are awful, his tone is meh, and the overall product is laughable. If this sets the standard for albums in 2015, it looks like Underground will be the only good thing this year.… Expand

    An incredible album that tells a different kind of story than GKMC. Though it isn's as instantaneously catchy, it is just as enjoyable. I already can't wait for the next episode in the Kendrick Lamar Saga

    Ever since Good Kid M.A.A.D. City (GKMC) graced my ears, I was sold on Kendrick and eagerly awaited his next album. It is safe to say that this was worth the three year wait. As with any album, preceded by something with the same magnitude of GKMC, I doubted Kendrick could top his previous work and was worried he would feel pressured to conform to the industry norm of thoughtless bangers,Ever since Good Kid M.A.A.D. City (GKMC) graced my ears, I was sold on Kendrick and eagerly awaited his next album. It is safe to say that this was worth the three year wait. As with any album, preceded by something with the same magnitude of GKMC, I doubted Kendrick could top his previous work and was worried he would feel pressured to conform to the industry norm of thoughtless bangers, void of any social message, but I was more than pleasantly surprised. Kendrick has maintained his individualism, faultlessly blending genres of funk, jazz and hip hop to create quite possibly the album of the decade and a body of work so artistic, intricate and sophisticated, it almost feels as if you are watching a film as you listen to it.

    When the singles of "i" and "Blacker the Berry" were released, I didn't take to them as well as I did to singles from GKMC, but once I listened to them with the context of the album, my opinion of them skyrocketed and it revealed so much of the layered meaning behind the songs. This truly speaks to the thematic integrity of this album and it's cohesion.

    Listening to this album is like listening to 4 dimensional music. Lamar's use of background sound effects, voice distortions and accents add countless layers of meaning and emotion onto the already nuanced lyrics and music. This album is not just about the music, Lamar uses many varied forms of expression to create a multiplicitous engagement of the mind and soul

    But perhaps my favourite feature of this album is the epilogue of each track, which gradually feeds us small epiphanies about Kendrick's experience and the rest of the album. These bursts of spoken word tie the album together beautifully and I quite literally felt chills down my spine and tears in my eyes when I heard them culminate in Mortal Man and the mystery man respond to them.

    What excites me most about this masterpiece, is the social message Kendrick puts forward. I feel if this message is heeded, and supported by other members of the American community, it represents a very real opportunity to fix the social disparity faced by the African American community in certain parts of the country.

    This is an album, where if you are a fan of Kendrick and his substance, you will love, but also if you are a fan of quality music in general too, you will enjoy as well. I feel it's power lies in it's ability to make people who are as foreign to Kendrick's experience as myself understand what he has been through, is going through and wants to achieve.

    This truly is a masterpiece that will stand the test of time, and I get the feeling, this is one of those albums that can change the course of history not just because of it's musical and lyrical genius, but because of it's poignant and timely social message. Congratulations on producing a masterpiece in every sense of the word, but, no matter how hard I try, I cannot imagine how you could top this. If this doesn't win Album of the Year at the next Grammy Awards, nothing should.    … Expand

Several themes are tackled here, such as mental illness, abuse of power, exploitation, racism etc. What sets this album apart from any other Hip-Hop album of recent times is it's focus onAn album Hip-Hop deserves, and the one it needs right now. Experimental production that merges several genres successfully, accompanied by philosophical and socially conscious/ relevant lyrics. Several themes are tackled here, such as mental illness, abuse of power, exploitation, racism etc. What sets this album apart from any other Hip-Hop album of recent times is it's focus on transcending current trends in favour of delivering powerful messages over live, funk and soulful laced production from talented producers such as Flying Lotus, Terrence Martin and Pharrell Williams etc. The album contains a limited number of featured artists but the features present are used brilliantly, the feature list ranges from music legends such as Goerge Clinton, Snoop Dogg, and Ronald Isley to upcoming artists and frequent collaborators, Thundercat, Anna Wise, Rapsody and Assassin. A great album featuring detailed production, top tier rhyming and lyricism and a cohesive narrative that ties the tracks together perhaps more-so than it's equally incredible predecessor 'Good Kid, m.A.A.d City'. This album takes several listenings to understand the messages being conveyed and the sonic direction the album is taking, and the pay-off will be worth the investment. Humour and darkness are gorgeously interwoven in the blend of jazz, funk and hard hitting beats throughout the album though all the songs seem to be connected by a sense of unease, an ominous or sinister uncertainty. Singles like "i" or "The Black the Berry" on their own could have seemed bizarre on their own but as pieces of a bigger picture, regardless of the vast differences between them, work to further the concepts at hand in the album. If you don't know the albums ending I won't spoil it and would encourage you not to look it up before listening all the way through. It is as profound and endearing as it is surprising and hilarious. Overall, To Pimp a Butterfly is quite simply essential. It is a work of art that will be discussed, will inspire and will be enjoyed for years and years to come and it is deserving of all the praise it gets. Buy it, it's worth it!… Expand

When I listen to "To Pimp A Butterfly" I feel like I'm lost in K-Dot's mind; rolling up and down stream, ducking and dodging, tossing and turning, a world wind of emotion.

    Listeners will definitely be dissecting and analyzing this work of art for many years to come. I am completely overwhelmed with how complex this work is and excited that there is someone representing for dope lyrics, flawless execution and clever arrangements. You have to listen to it several times to comprehend and if I'm being completely honest, probably more times than that.

    Everything about this album is executed masterfully. The music of course stands out as the most intriguing to me. It's primarily jazz influenced, but there are lots of other styles here as well, and it's all woven together so intricately that each song retains its own distinctive character while still forming a cohesive whole. It's pretty complex stuff too. The song structures are strange and change abruptly, the chord progressions are mostly nonstandard, and the live musicians are clearly very talented. The music alone makes this album a standout. And of course, Lamar's rapping is on point throughout. His flow is really dynamic and constantly interesting, and the lyrics are quite poetic and never stupid or cliche.

    I've listened to this about 3 times but I feel like I've only scraped the surface at all the different layers. It's dense, complicated, and extremely visual music, but at times it's also very chill and hypnotic. And it's also not radio friendly at all, which I admire coming from such a big name in the industry. Bravo!    … Expand

The Rugged Man.

There are tones of incredible idee on each tracks. 75 minutes could have been too long, it's not. And the outro of the album is the best outro in the history of music since a day in the life from the Beatles. I cry every time i hear it becauseThis is simply the greatest album of the century. As I listen to it more and more the more I realize it's one of the most inspiring and beautiful things I've ever heard. I was expecting the bangers and club hits like M.A.A.D. City and Swimming Pools, but instead this album has completely changed my perspective on music. I now have songs like Sing About Me and These Walls on repeat. I'm constantly on Rap Genius looking into the deep and complex meanings behind each song. This whole album is unbelievably amazing. Anyone who says they don't like it can go listen to Migos or Drake. But if you enjoy real music this album will blow you away. Earns it's #4 all-time rank for sure. Proves there are few to none who are on Kendrick's level.… Expand

    The gripes that I have with the album is that, while I really liked the production, and the jazzy vibe, I think, at times, the jazz begins to swallow the album, and is overbearing. I do not think there is enough contrast, and I would have liked to have seen a little more variance in production, and sound. I think that the jazz makes the album flow together too well, as I found myself a little lost at points. Sometimes two songs sounded too much alike, and dragged on a bit. There really isn't a bad sound or song in the entire album, but there a few boring patches that did not engage me as much as I would have liked.

    However, again, I did really enjoy this album, and it is great that Kendrick is brave enough to disregard fans that want him to produce "bangers" to go with a more artistic and original approach. This album should definitely make a run for "Best Rap Album" of 2015.    … Expand

    In a arguably stale climate for hip hop, Kendrick Lamar has managed to drop a project that explores the boundaries of jazz and funk while simultaneously maintaining deep roots in to the culture that created him. To Pimp A Butterfly is a great departure from his major label debut and I have no doubt that Lamar's next project will push the genre even further forward.

    For somebody who isn't very experienced with modern hip hop, To Pimp a Butterfly is both accessible and infinitely layered, making for an album that grabs me on first listen, but will take a hundred more to digest.

    This album is just excellent! Kendrick proves he's an authentic rapper and not a stupid follower. The instrumentals are very well-made and are a honorable tribute to black music, for once it's not some dripping trap vulgarity and the lyrics are entirely sincere and experienced. Ladies and gentlemen, here is the new rap classic.

    I laugh every time I hear someone mention "Yeezus" and try to compare that half-baked effort to this masterpiece. Kanye isn't a real rapper, he's a persona. Kendrick is real and it shines through with flying colors on this release. Originally I gave this a 9, I'm updating to a 10 because subsequent listens have impressed me that much. God bless Kendrick Lamar.
