Paramore is back! Old fans will like this album much more than the last densely poppier After Laughter. They're now taking notes of old classics and listening to recent bops and cooking them into a more mature and beautiful body of work that easily could satisfy the broader spectrum of generations.

"This Is Why" delivers Paramore at their most heartfelt and mature, while still drawing inspiration from new wave, synth pop, and that distinct 70's and 80's revivalist flair they developed on their previous record "After Laughter".

"This Is Why" delivers Paramore at their most heartfelt and mature, while still drawing inspiration from new wave, synth pop, and that distinct 70's and 80's revivalist flair they developed on their previous record "After Laughter".
In many ways, "This Is Why" feels like a creative synthesis for Paramore following their last two projects — "After Laughter" and "Paramore" — as well as each members solo endeavors. Especially we see the influence of HalfNoise, the side project of drummer Zac Farro, who have long delved into funk and synth flavors directly inspired by the tones of the 1970s, especially African and Afro-inspired pop like Thomas Mapfumo.
The vocal performance is skilled and precise, as is to be expected of Williams, who's prowess as a vocalist has always towered high above all contemporaries in modern punk, pop, and new wave. Its lyrics also feel like an evolution of the same theme's lead singer Hayley Williams has been hitting her entire career, especially exploitative and unhealthy relationship, as well as contemporary politics.
While the theme's remain largely the same throughout the record, Williams' pen shows a newfound maturity that wasn't quite expressed fully in previous projects. Especially compared to their glorious self-titled album (which, while filled with fun explosive songs, often suffered from a feeling of juvenility), Williams' perspectives are fully developed and nuanced in a way seldom seen in modern music. Her thoughts on politics are brought to maturity with the thoughtful, albeit anxious and angry "The News". Williams' commentary on relationships, already meaningful and unique on "After Laughter" is brought to a new high in the record, especially the song "Thick Skull", which features Williams more beautiful, crushing, and nuanced than she has ever been. Other track highlights include "Running Out of Time", an anxious, danceable meditation on anxiety over time management, and feeling that she's prioritizing the wrong things in life. "Big Man, Little Dignity" is the most beautiful track Paramore has written since the emotionally explosive "Brand New Eyes", with a reserved, stark vocal performance, and a cold synth that evokes both disconnect and nature. "Figure 8"'s precise, beautiful, and off-putting orchestration make it a clear highlight. The album has a slight problem with front-loading, although it's consistency and thoughtfulness make even my least favorite track, "Liar", a relative standout.
This funky, thought provoking music is accompanied by Paramore's new aesthetic, pulling away from both the colorful 80's revival aesthetic donned on "After Laughter" and the neon pop-punk feel they rocked until then. This new visual style, like their music, is mature, yet still steeped in vintage and romanticism, while returning a bit of grit. This style is consistent throughout branding, concerts, album artwork, and music videos, and makes "This Is Why" really feel like a new direction the band is intent on committing to.
After many years of waiting, "This Is Why" is a strong return from Paramore, delivering perhaps their best album to date. The music feels it's been given the room to develop and time to mature. "This Is Why" is likely to enter the collective music consciousness, and be remembered for years as an instant classic, which will for years feel both new and familiar, beautiful yet bold, heartbreaking yet fun; the kind of duality few albums ever manage to achieve.

This is album communicate with people who used to feel disconnected by society, tried to fit in and now it's embracing their weirdness, uniqueness and viscerous piece of their selfs. There's a lot of critics of the way the we're living, to the capitalism, autopilot mode and bad things we normalize instead of normalizing our identities. The narrative is clear and it'll connect to the ones strays in social life, to the people that need to free themselves of normality, especially to the ones that tried to fit in and get lost being adults socially acceptable, but in intension inner disorder . You can be what you used to be. That's the calling to the 00s teenagers, now adults. The complexity emotional it's a point from the middle til the end of the album. The group talks about being adult and also vulnerable, it's notable the dilemma of adult maturation in conflict with wilderness, sadness, savior complex, emotional disappointments and nostalgic. Hayley end it calling the listener to achieve new memories, creating nostalgic as it the listener actually does for the past. It's a big invite to embrace life as it was (and as it is), as you have to do to your self, and how you used to do it and stopped in the middle of the life's path. The sonority it's mature, new elements made that production sounds actual, but not strange to people that has a past connection to the group. It's a masterpiece to Indie/rock fans, and complex to a complex adult generation. Expand

Unique in that it is hard to translate one's own feelings and she does it so well, as well as making those lyrics explode through her voice - truly, the voice of a generation.

Taylor's guitar lines are insane, the riffs explode creativity on a majestic level, the guitar leads you through every song in the best way possible.

What about Zac and his drums? He was merciless, so talented that it is impossible not to feel those beats and want to take over the world.

This Is Why is the first album released with the same formation from the last album and this is literally visible when we heard how confident they sound together. This Is Why is all the things that they know, feel and think all together and mixed with an harmonic touch.

They did an amazing choice of the 4 singles to this álbum and they are definitely the most 4 energetic songs of the album.
And excluding the singles already released (This Is Why, The News and C'est Comme Ça), the songs that most drag my attention was definitely You First and Figure 8.

The best lyrics prize for sure goes to Crave and mostly for Thick Skull.

And if you are/was into Hayley's solo era (Petals For Armor and Flowers For Vases/Descansos) I have great news!
Big Man, Little Dignity and Liar are very likely those works. You can definitely feels that was Hayley who wrote and worked those songs.

The only complaint that I have to make is the short duration of the full album. With only 10 songs, the full time is only 36 minutes and since the fans waited more than 5 years to this, they kinda was expecting a little more.
But since we know that Paramore isn't a band of short album (or at least was), we are highly expecting some deluxe version with more songs added!

That's it, hope you enjoyed the album so much as I did and my definitely score is: 9.8!
(I gave 10 on metacritics since they don't have 9.8 as option and 9.8 is closer to 10 then 9.)

Absolutely in love with this album. I definitely did not expect the album to be like this after This is Why, The News, and C’est Comme Ça came out but oh man did it exceed my expectations. The thing I love about Paramore is they can do absolutely anything, each of their albums is different and I love that so much. This is Why might be one of my favorite Paramore now. My favorite songs in the album were definitely “Big Man, Little Dignity” “You First” “Thick Skull” “Crave” and my all time favorite “Liar”. Listening to this album for the first time was an absolutely surreal experience, I’m a big fan of Paramore so I’ve been waiting for a new album release for a while, and when I listened to this album I felt like I was floating. I already wish i could listen to it for the first time again Expand

Instrumentos muito bem colocados, letras que fazem sentido e são muito boas de se ver.
No geral, a obra está muito bem feita e é digna de prêmios.

This Is Why is adulthood in 2023. it's balancing the uncertainty of the state of the world w/ the personal growth, self-reflection and revelations that come with aging. The album is a psychedelic post-punk pondering about confusion between feeling overwhelmed over weight of being alive & the issues surrounding you, from the most ordinary inside you to those enormous far away, and finally hopelessness around it. It’s about a ‘war’ far away, the one as it seems without your direct impact on, and then, another one in your own head. It’s about anxious calculation of self-preservation and taking actions & engaging with problems. Do I leave the house or hide inside it? It’s about the emotional cost of instilled hyper-awareness of your own shortcomings. What do I do with those? What if chaos is the easiest route, or the most captivating one? There is a rage & vengefulness, and apathy & resignation at the same time all over the album. It’s about trying to find the balance, but is it even possible once your awareness grows & mental issues accumulate? There is no answer. And that's what the album is about. Expand

You get the feeling that Hayley Williams and the rest of Paramore are still looking more outwardly than inwardly — that the wisdom of age has left them wanting for more, and questioning all. And that’s a great look for Paramore.

Slight missteps do little to deter what is some of the band's most instantly likable tracks in their career, where they turn up one rave-up rocker after the next with wide-eyed fury. Having proven themselves time and time again, they've far outpaced those unwilling to grow up with them.

That dichotomy between the visceral and the lackadaisical defines This Is Why instead of its value as a snapshot of this decade's global chaos, and in that sense, this LP is neither their best nor their "most mature." Regardless, there's nothing to stop you from reveling in this album's own chaotic dynamics, seriousness and passiveness juxtaposed. It's a worthy if mildly disappointing addition to Paramore's canon.
