  1. The Beauty of the Rain is Dar Williams' first recording that truly expands upon the sound of the album before it.
  2. While Dar Williams's artistic trademarks--lyrical introspection, melodic warmth, an occasional tendency toward breathy vocal preciousness--remain much in evidence on this collection, the expanded musical support adds more rhythmic propulsion and layers of harmonies to the mix.

As lively as contemporary folk gets. [#14, p.144]
  4. Mojo

She's somehow too like several other singers and perhaps too unambitious a writer to immediately engage novitiates. [Mar 2003, p.114]
  5. Q Magazine

Her most rounded album.... However, many lyrics have taken a sudden, baffling turn into mystical territory making this two steps forward and one back. [May 2003, p.114]
  6. Williams remains both ambitious and pleasingly plain-spoken.
  7. It's probably a bolder, more daring record than it will ever be given credit for, as it's rare that an artist recognizes that she does some things very well, and then does them.
