    The album shows how Katy managed to overcome one of the most problematic moments of her career. It rescues some musical styles that have not been heard for a long time, for example, Teary Eyes, finally Perry managed to do an excellent job as expected.

    Honestly? Doesn't deserve half of the hate it got from the critics. Of course it's not like Prism or Teenage Dream, but people can't expect a grown woman to stay on the same "rainbows, candy and california" vibe forever (and it's weird that the critics expected that from Smile when Teenage Dream had such a low score). I'm so glad she is happy, with a man who loves her, her baby Daisy and aHonestly? Doesn't deserve half of the hate it got from the critics.     ‘Smile’ is quite reminiscent of Perry’s old works, especially ‘Teenage Dream’. It has catchy and cheerful bops. The clown theme doesn’t really fit the record and there are many tracks that just sound like rushed fillers (looking at you ‘Resilient’!)

As many people know the album shares the story of how Katy Perry went through her depression and how she healed her wounds by searching what made her really happy. This album transmits her most deep feelings through the lyrics. The production is just incredible.

Divided into four different sections which all feature very different and unique sounding songs the album opens up with her 2019 single Never Really Over which is followed by the incredibly catchy Cry About It Later which is about overcoming a breakup by hooking up with someone else while. Teary Eyes continues the theme of heartbreak and tells you to keep on dancing even when you’re sad. The lead single Daisies is this album's empowerment anthem and is followed by Resilient which features some of Perry's best vocals. Not the End of the World is a trap influenced song and tells you to focus on the positives even if the world seems like it's ending. The album's title track Smile is about Perry finding her smile again after her depression following the hate she got after her 2017 album Witness. Champagne Problems is about getting through the hardest times in a relationship to end up finding one's true love. The disco-influenced Tucked is about imagining a relationship with a past lover even though knowing it was a mistake. Harleys in Hawaii was also released during 2019 and is a tropical love song about Perry and Bloom's time together in Hawaii. If you only had one day left to live is the question inspiring the song Only Love in which Perry sings about focusing on the love in the world and forgetting the hate. On the last track of the album Perry answer the question What Makes a Woman in a song that is dedicated to her first child Daisy Dove Bloom.
    The album is definitely Perry's most cohesive one and I can't believe critics are calling it not experimental enough even though they trashed Witness for being too experimental and wanted her to return to her pop-roots and now that she does, they're trashing her yet again. Most of the reviews also compare her to other female singers such as Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga which surprisingly isn't done when talking about them.    … Expand

    Definetly Katy's best work, I didn't really expect the album to be cohesive but surprisingly it is! I love every song on the album. The best one is definetly "Not The End Of The World", the production on it is amazing, i love dark katy so that's a perfect track. The album is 10/10, there aren't any bad songs on there

    An album with messages of positivity and resilience. Great vibe, pure pop at it’s best. Cry About It Later, Teary Eyes, Never Really Over and Only Love are simply perfect.

    Sonidos ochenteros y letras muy personales invaden a smile por completo. El mejor album de Katy hasta ahora. Sabemos que la critica la escupe. Pero tambien sabemos lo bueno que es su trabajo. Ella mo necesita nada se esto para ser quien es.

    Pop Perfection! This is for sure one of Katy's best albums. The lyrics and the production are beyond amazing.

    Without fleeting moments of bad taste, Perry does indeed sound mature, but she's also not quite as fun. That's a conscious choice, though. Smile is intended to evoke memories of her frivolous younger days while pointing toward a sustainable pop future.

    While Perry finds the occasional moment of quality here (Smile and Tucked both feel like the best possible music we could get from Katy Perry in 2020), Smile is an album searching for an identity—and when it fails, it falls back on lazy writing.

    Like Joanne before Chromatica, Smile plays like a necessary centering exercise, indulging her insecurities and less surefire instincts. If Witness was overdetermined, Smile is an earnest exhale, for better or for worse. It delivers an image of her journey towards inner peace that is honest (if corny) and catchy (if not exactly inventive).
