It's a usual project including mixes of alternative R&B, neo-soul, trap and rap. It flawed too. It's not a typical Tyler, the Creator's style, since it's a R&B dominant rather than a rap one. Other than that, it's wacky (in the best way), excitable, and surprisingly addicting. This project shows how prominent Tyler can prove that he can sing.

In one sentence, it’s a mix of Flower Boy and the positives of Cherry Bomb. It’s an album that’s accessible to anyone and Tyler pulls out all the stops here. Fans of his rapping may not enjoy the lack of rapping throughout - but if you can get past that then this album will be an amazing listen.

First Tyler album that I enjoyed front to back. IGOR is a monolith project, cohesive with its production, engaging and immersing with its atmosphere, reminds me of Gambino's "Awaken my love" in terms of musicality and atypical sound compared to previous artist's works.

Tyler is at a point in his career where he can make purposely awkward music sound professional and polished. This also marks the third release from the OFWGKTA camp to successfully embrace the experiential. Though not completely air-tight, "Igor" offers an exciting new direction for Tyler. One to build upon on upcoming releases.

The album is truly Tyler’s most emotional and heartfelt piece of work. The production is Kanye West level quality and during the times when Tyler raps or sings or whatever he wants to do, its amazing. I'm going to try and keep this review short as I've only listened once, but you best believe I'm getting another few listens in today. After 'Flower Boy' was released, I didn't really know how Tyler could manage to top such an incredible project, as it was such a change in tone, aesthetic and the story in it was gorgeous. But, I feel like 'IGOR' did this just as good, if not better. This sounds like Tyler's first attempt at an R&B/pop album, being a complete left turn from his style in anything else, and Tyler was really not joking when he said he wanted to sing. It's minimalist in it's very nature, with Tyler taking a step back on pretty much every track, letting the features and heavy production take the lead, and in tracks like 'PUPPET' the way Tyler manages to utilise Kanye West's singing is a testament to his production abilities. On 'Flower Boy', one of the things that impressed me the most was Tyler's production, being all by himself, being so different yet so damn impressive. In this project, it's more experimental, sounding like all of Tyler's previous works have been put into a blender and spewed out onto the canvas that is 'IGOR.'

Much like 'Flower Boy', the album has underlying themes of love and the things going on in Tyler's head, with a tonne of metaphors placed throughout, so I might do another article trying to explain these, as I attempt to try and grasp the album more. In his statement before the release of the album, Tyler made it clear that he wanted there to be no distractions when taking in the project, and his reasoning for this has shone in this project. The gothic, disco and pop feel of the album just makes it sound like it was made so people could dance around in their room and take it in. It sounds like what people would listen to in a rainy car ride at night on their way home. It sounds like what an album should be. Mainstream rap listeners will be likely to not enjoy this project, as it is so different, even for Tyler. This could resonate with some pop music fans though, and could elevate Tyler's stature as an artist. It almost has this kind of vibe which portrays Tyler as a disco king, which is shown through the way he dresses and the set design in the clips leading up the albums release.

It's so upbeat in it's very nature, every track is a so called 'banger', sounding like it could literally be played anywhere, and I would love to get into a mosh pit when Tyler performs this live. It just seems to shine on every highlight it is given, and is probably my favourite album of the year so far, but admittedly, I get overly excited on first listens sometimes. It's vastly experimental but his most accessible, and one of his most relatable albums to date. It's almost as if Tyler took some of the things he was trying to do on 'Cherry Bomb', and put them onto this project, but as a more experienced artist, refining everything that did not shine on that project. A lot of the sounds and production make you feel the emotions intended, rather than the lyrics, in a vastly rich soundscape. You can feel the anger, love, pain and happiness intended on each track, without even having to listen to the lyrics. The album has it's own identity compared to Tyler's previous works, and if his name and face wasn't on it, you'd have to take a minute to figure out who it is.

To conclude, this album is absolutely gorgeous. As much as I loved 'Flower Boy', I'm not afraid to say that I think this is Tyler's best work and will be one of his most important, I could change my mind, but as of right now, I am in love with this project. This will definitely going up for the album of the year, and I think Tyler could finally get the Grammy he deserves. It is an amazing thing to watch his growth as an artist, from his controversial and gritty lyrics, to shining in this project as a beautiful disco/pop/R&B album. It's going to be one of the albums that sets the tone for my summer, and all I can say right now is this: Tyler, stank you smelly mucho.

Perhaps what makes this such a solid entry in Tyler's discography isn't just the luscious synth-drenched production, but the albums willingness to explore its own awkwardness. The concept of "Igor", this deformed figure longing for affection and intimacy, permeates the entire album. The project itself is a frankensteined mix of influences and genres, to the point that it's hard to make out at times. Which works in Tyler's favour here, "Igor", never quite gives you all the answers, instead launches you into an entirely unique musical landscape, that becomes more vivid with each return visit. The production here is layered, intelligent and elevates each track, while the often corny lyrics and vocals paint it with alternative hip hop camp. His writing on this album doesn't quite take centre stage like in previous cuts, but what it does achieve is allowing the listener to be one with the song and feel each decadent transition. Fans of Tyler's previous work should enjoy this new project, it sounds as if Cherry Bomb and Flower boy had an illegitimate child, that possessed the talent and diversity of its parents, yet refused to follow in their footsteps. "Igor" is definitely one of Tyler, The Creator's bravest creative ventures thus far, and truly cements him as an artist on the forefront of redefining modern music.

Against his fans desires, Tyler strays even further from his older aggressive style and gives us something even better than that; with what"s possibly one of the most creative, experimental, and borderline ear-gasmic break-up albums dropped in a while.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Tyler’s most mature and nuanced album to date. After the revelations of ‘Flower Boy,’ ‘IGOR’ takes the ideas of love and sexuality and plunges deep into them, exploring a narrative of love, lust, jealousy, loss and finally acceptance. The features, aside from Playboy Carti on ‘EARFQUAKE,’ are all placed subtly and add to the musical landscape rather than distract from it and the sonic aesthetic created by Tyler is a perfect blending of the lo-fi indie stylings of ‘Flower Boy’ and the brash, abrasive and distorted synth-bass driven hip-hop of early Tyler works. ‘IGOR’ contains Tyler at his most vulnerable throughout the track list; particularly on the albums emotional climax ‘NEW MAGIC WAND,’ where Tyler seemingly flies into a fit of rage which is perfectly reflected by the distorted vocals, heavy bass and stuttering drums. One could criticise Tyler’s at time off-key singing during the record, however I feel that it more adds to the honesty and vulnerability that he is exhibiting here as he wears his heart truly on his sleeves. This is the evolution that truly brings fans of Tyler and critics together in agreement of the album’s excellence. Expand

Another classic album from Tyler! The production is amazing and his new style is getting even more into singing instead of rapping. Although his singing voice isn't exactly great it has charm and the songs are great and fit well with it.

I like that everyone can notice Tyler's evolution through the time. And this is a great example. He told us not to expect a rap album or any album at all. And the result is great. The production in this is beautiful and it is a nice experience to listen to it calmly. There are songs to relax, to play in the car, I personally loved this album.

The opening track, IGOR'S Theme, is an oddly beautiful mix of synth, drums, bass, and electric guitar, giving the listener an insight into the remainder of the album. Several songs stood out to me specifically, including EARFQUAKE, RUNNING OUT OF TIME, and GONE GONE/ THANK YOU. This album is not perfect, however, and some flaws include the heavy bass and synth sometimes drowning out the vocals, and the overall lack of vocal performance from Tyler, and while there are some amazing bars and vocals, they are not as numerous as in Flower Boy. However, Tyler did state in an official post that this would not be a rap album, so take that as you will. Overall, compared to Flower Boy, this is a much more experimental album, and will not work for some people, but it sure did for me. I'm honestly pretty new to Tyler and his music, after listening to Flower Boy recently and thoroughly enjoying it, I felt like this album felt too messy and cluttered, where the music was not necessarily bad, however it just felt like so much could've been done so much better.

Interesting production muddied by obnoxious euphemisms. There are genuine highlights, but lyrics like "I'm your puppet, U control me" and "U make my earthquake" lack subtletly, convey no real emotion, and are corny as hell. The first, stronger half of the record is captivating enough, but there is no compelling narrative to hold onto here. Overall, a weak and superfluous follow up to Flower Boy.

I also think that this is the perfect example to say: Being random and throwing a bunch of random synths into random thracks and calling that **** an album isn't 'artistic' nor good.

It can come across as rather repetitive throughout with some songs feeling like you’ve heard it before on first listen. Tyler also can’t sing at all, leaving a high pitched voice in place for his singing voice, reminding me of a great Mac millar tape - delusional Thomas, however Tyler’s voice is one of the reasons he was so memorable and that raw aggressive deep voice has no place on IGOR.

IGOR, where not a let down, is not the work I expected from Tyler and feels more along the mainstream audience with constant hooks instead of content.

IGOR is a beautiful, extremely cohesive, and well-produced album. it's about falling in love for a boy, realizing how dangerous it is, and ultimately realizing he has to let him go, all this on a 39-minute conceptual album - one of the most well-achieved conceptual albums i've ever heard.

while the opening is a beautiful, tone-setting melody hinting us about the album we are about to experience, IGOR closes with «ARE WE STILL FRIENDS?» - a painfully, melancholic and heavenly song that showcases the denouement of the album - igor finally coming to terms with the unrequited love he pursues, while wanting to still have some kind of connection to the boy he loves, perhaps knowing it is the only way they can be together, forever masking his remaining feelings for him, just as the boy he loved would mask who he really was.

Things improve markedly when he plays to his strengths with the nuanced narrative of “A Boy Is A Gun”, but ultimately such moments [are] hard to hear over the pitiable “Puppet” and “Earfquake”, functional pop wisely rejected by Justin Bieber and Rihanna. When the narrative sags and his mind seems to wander, it just isn’t enough, no matter how stylish the trimmings. [Aug 2019, p.68]

For the most part, Tyler has opted out of his rapping heritage, preferring pitch-altered singing vocals which will split some opinion. However, this elevated IGOR beyond the mere confines of genre, to a substantially great work of art, cementing Tyler's case as one of this decade's most essential artists.
