What a wonderful, bizarre journey! Henki is described on the website as dealing with "special plants throughout history, making it the greatest flora-themed hypno-folk-metal record you’ll hear this year." It is every bit of this and more. Songs often start out as mellow folk with synth undertones and slowly build until they morph into soaring psychedelic rock operas. It reminded me a lot of this weird combination of the song "The Trees" by Rush but with 2112 vibes and a dash of Judas Priest. Every single song is filled with unexpected moments. Henki is an eccentric concept record that any serious prog rock enthusiast will love. Expand

A true masterpiece, Richard Dawson has really out done himself on this, it seems like every record he puts out becomes more complex and beautiful, instrumentally and vocally. every track has perfect production, and while patience is required to fully embrace this albums wonder, once it kicks, you wont want to stop listening.

A general choogle drives most of the songs, the production tends to suppress any heavy metal impulses, while the dense arrangements also neuter Dawson’s gnarled improvisational guitar style, so extremes are essentially cancelled. It’s the most normal sounding record I’ve heard from either party, but the singer can’t help but entertain even within these surprisingly prim surroundings. [Dec 2021, p.48]

Dawson's heavily mannered delivery and maximalist verbosity requires patience at times, but Silene is one of the most straightforwardly beautiful songs he has ever recorded. [Jan 2022, p.83]

Henki is an extremely entertaining tightrope walk between restraint and free rein, its well-earned moments of excess and exuberance genuinely joyful. It’s a ridiculous and brilliant record and makes an extravagant last-minute bid to sit among the best albums of the year.
