what is this harry?? i expectted so much from 'the frontman of 1D'.Not even 1 song makes me feel like yeah i've heard something unique. All songs are mediocore. The music sounds familiar. He should make his own music and stop recreating the music that already exists.sorry harry this album failed to impress me

I was very eager to get myself the self-titled 'Harry Styles' album after all the publicity he's been getting of late. It had many hurdles to get over in my book in terms of authenticity and creativeness.

Although there are certain songs that I really liked such as 'Sign of The Times', it doesn't really get going from there. I found myself on many occasion wanting to skip to the next track. But every time I did, it felt like some of the songs never really got me in the mood to listen further than a few seconds.

It was possibly because my high standards come from years of listening to the likes of Queen and Bowie. I may have been spoilt all those years ago.

There is some work to do for Harry. I still feel some of his former band members of 1D are coming out with more original soundtracks. And the sound he has needs a little refinement. The plagiarism allegations don't help much either. Sweet Creature sounded oddly similar to The Beatles Blackbird. Another 'oddity' was when was that Sign of The Times almost sounded like David Bowie's Space Oddity. And lastly Ever Since New York sounded a lot like Badfinger's Baby Blue. This is in my opinion is something to be very wary of. I think that took me by surprise and really didn't help my opinion of the album.

If Harry is to become the rockstar he wants to be, there is a lot he needs to do.

The songs continue to have the same form as the One Direction songs. The rhythms and lyrics are too basic, while the voice is very flat. I think it's an overrated album and that cataloging it in the rock range is too much, for me it's just another album more pop / rock

I took a listen to all the songs. They're either boring, or trying to copy someone else's sound. This is not worth the hype it was given, nor does it put him on the level of Prince or Bowie. This is nothing new, or even wanted by the general public.

They are decent songs, yes, but far too forgettable, and at times just too repetitive to listen to in full. I think Harry has made a decent effort here for his debut, but it is lacking standout moments. The definition of solid but unremarkable.

Tilly - I've never been a One Direction fan, much less a Harry Styles fan, but was eagerly awaiting his debut because I could see how much potential he had to be an excellent artist. I knew it was going to be a mixture of indie and indie rock given that he just has that kind of vibe to him but wondered just how successful he was going to be with his first attempt. I'm happy to say that the self titled album is mostly a success. A few of the tracks like Sweet Creature and Woman, were at times rather laughable - in fact during the latter, it sounded as if a Canadian goose has been let loose in the studio. However, From The Dining Table and Two Ghosts just prove that this guy has what it takes to be considered a serious, successful and genuinely talented singer. Overall Harry Styles' debut was emotional, flirtatious and certainly a good introduction to the real Harry. I eagerly await the follow up.

If I had known that each of the songs would sound exactly the same, as if they were bad discards of Kiss, I'd have stayed with Kiss's worst albums, at least those if not better than this.
Just a good song to rescue, the rest sounds like Ed Sheeran songs that I discard and nobody wanted.
P.T. The sophisticated sound of R & B, Soul and urban by Zayn is still much better.

It seems like he listened to old music from all the legends and he tried to make an album out of what he heard. Feels more like a tribute album than something to show who he actually is as an artist. Very boring and faceless!

I was excepting more of harry, given the hype and the comparisons to Bowie, Prince, ... which now sound a bit pretentious. It is not a bad album per se, it is very well produced, but unoriginal and generic, and often boring. Most of the songs sound like something we already heard a million times before. His lyrics are poorly written, and often misogynistic.

Woman is the only song out of the album that I feel a bit of soul from him...everything else feels manufactured, as expected. Surely he has a better range in vocals in comparison to Niall and Louis, but he's not showing it off. It's not any different from the Made in the AM album (only real difference is he had Liam, Louis, and Niall to help) and I'm pretty sure the album Four was the catalyst to Harry going this route. Don't get me wrong here, I love folk and the rock'n'roll music from the 60s-70s, but this is like a copy + paste version of that. Guess having the right people behind you pay for the high reviews for this album, which is a shame, if given a proper criticism of an album, the artist can rise above their 1st attempt (and this goes for ANY form of art). Sorry Harry, it's a no from me, but please try again. Would love to hear what you really want to put out there.

I went into this album to figure out who Harry Styles is and what he was trying to accomplish. It didn't take long to realize his comparisons to past stars such as Bowie were warranted in some respects. Key word, some. I wasn't listening to Harry to see which glam star of the past few decades he was trying to impersonate, I wanted to see him as an artist. I feel like his album, for me personally, fell short in that respect. His songs weren't very memorable, relying more so on repetition (not only with lyrics, but the stories the songs told as well). If you asked me to recall one song that possibly stood out, I would say "Woman," since it is virtually impossible not to get his chorus stuck in your head. I appreciated "From the Dining Table" too. Did I find out who Harry Styles was? Well, no, other than the fact that he has trouble opening up and sleeps with girls, but any artist nowadays can provide me a tune expressing those sentiments in a less "tribute-y" "repetitive" way. I can only hope for more experimentation in albums to come. His debut album should have had more risk, but I think the problem came down to the fact that Harry was too focused on curating an image rather than putting out music that truly represented him. Review of Harry Styles, the self titled album - 6.5/10 (3/5)

Going for an old school British sound, Harry's solo debut album is set to capture an audience different from the screaming teen girls that followed One Direction.
Influences of melancholic & / psychedelic rock and punk-funk are clear, with excessive use of electronic guitar riffs and distorted vocals that remind you of David Bowie, Bryan Adams, Bruce Springsteen, The Beatles, ect.
    - The album starts with "Meet Me In The Hallway", an almost George-Michael-at-a-hipster-after-party ballad.
    - The core of the album is presented next: slow-versed but with a powerful chorus, "Sign Of The Times" captures the attention as first single.
    - "Carolina", a headache-inducing noise factory, is just the worst song on the album. He really believes people will sing along to that "lalalalalalala" try-hard Mick Jagger stuff?
    - Sad, because the next song, "Two Ghosts", is a beautiful, relaxing, almost-country ballad, a la The Eagles and The Boss combined.
    - Ah, "Sweet Creature", a sweet guitar 'pickle'-song, I could 've done without the strained repetitive belts, but it's acceptable.
We're already halfway through as the album is only 10 songs,
    - and "Only Angel" as an up-tempo rock song wakes us right up; it is just good fun (but please, get rid of the cowbell...). Europe's "Mind In The Gutter" sounds exactly the same.
    - "Kiwi" is rock-n-roll, Elvis, Bryan Adams and Kiss on steroids.
    - Oh, okay, we're going back to a calm Bowie-like forest-people-on-drugs anthem with "Ever Since New York". It is a good sing-along song, but can't keep the attention.
    - I heard this Elton John "Bennie And The Jets" type of sound coming back lately (Lady Gaga - "Hey Girl"), and Harry is trying to combine blues with smoke-a-cig-and-complain-about-women music with "Woman". Easy listening, but not my cup of tea.
    - The album ends the same way as it starts, with a slow after-hours track, which reminds me of Gustavo Santaolalla - "The Wings". "From The Dining Table" does not reach that level of quality though.

Briefly, Harry Styles by Harry Styles is an alternative hipster album, you either like it or you hate it. The fan girls will back off, and an older crowd will appear at bars, where Harry will be performing small-stage intimate Irish pub-shows. I recommend "Only Angel" as a potentially successful single.

For one the songs are inconsistent, both with song styles (no pun intended) and quality, ranging from epic piano ballads like Sign of the TIme to gentle acoustic tunes like Sweet Creatures, to some pretty awful and over produced attempt at making a Stones tune with Only Angel, to lite metal that shares more in common with Wolfmother (not a good thing at all) on Kiwi, to blatanly ripping off the ear cutting classic Stuck in the Middle With You on Carolina, to yet another blatant rip off of Benny and the Jets on Woman. And it's not helping matters that Harry comes off with less of an identity than before. For a solo debut I can't get much of a grasp as to whom exactly Mr. Styles is without seeing the influences that he is wearing so earnestly on his sleeves. From classic artists like Queen, Bowie, the Rolling Stones, McCartney, and Elton John, to even artists that perform under this style too, like Jeff Buckley, Rufus Wainwright, Destroyer, and Gold-era Ryan Adams, Harry is too often drowning in his influences rather than etching out a fresh identity.

BUT...I actually have a sweet spot for this record. I'm not going to lie, I'm a sucker for 70s singer-songwriter music, and hearing Harry draw from it is actually kind of a pleasure. As blatant as a homage is, he does respect the greats and does this sound justice. His voice has bombast and genuine great pipes, and even the tunes do sound great. It is refreshing to hear a major pop album sound like it is being played with actual instruments instead of being clogged up with processed and stiff electronics or reverbed and dull trap beats.

It will be interesting to hear what Harry Styles will do in the future if he does continue this throwback sound. It will probably lead down a path similar to Adele, another artist with a similar throwback sound that, along with Styles here, play it too safe and will probably win Grammys, but I do hope for him the best! If nothing else, Sign of the Times is still a fantastic song!

With Sign of the Times as a lead single, we knew what to expect when Harry dropped his debut set, one influenced greatly by rock artists, and an overall set that Grammy voters will not hesitate to pick when the time comes. The music is mostly and oddly relaxing, with the emotional cry of Sign of the Times and the simplicity of Two Ghost makes this worth all the time it is.

Harry Styles by Harry Styles is such a great album! From someone who came from a boy band, this is beyond expectation. The artist has a great taste in music and it literally manifested in his solo project. Truly Harry Styles never disappoints. I love his album to the core!

Styles, on his debut album post-One Direction, simply tries far too hard.

In his harried (ha) attempt to shed his boyband image, he takes on this "Rock Messiah" title that he has not yet done anything to deserve. A lot of the songs on his self-titled album are repetitive, dry, and in the case of a couple (Kiwi and Carolina), just tacky. The studio versions are the only versions that

The studio versions are the only versions that should be listened to, for a lot of his live versions sound absolutely abysmal. He strains his voice as much as Shawn Mendes and seems to be completely unaware of his range. He tries too many vocal tricks that are just jarring on the ears. The high note he often attempts on "Ever Since New York" is an example of just how, well, bad, he sounds live when he tries too hard to impress.

He succeeds overall in a few of the songs, "Woman", for instance, has a fun production with straightforward vocals and a quirky hook. "Ever Since New York" is another musical success, with its soft guitar and beautiful melody. Most of the songs, however, fall flat and just seem to be generic wannabe "rock classics", One should not aim to be a classic. Classics are not things to anticipate or to aim for, they just happen. Styles clearly was aiming for classic rock revivalist with this album and his new image, and to be frank, neither attempts worked.

This is a good debut that shows that he can stand on his own after One Direction. The songs do feel overly simplified and studio controlled however it is cool to see him find his own voice.

Harry Styles delivers so much of himself on tunes that sound like they were written decades ago. Even though it often leans on too little newness and occasional bland melodies, it is an impressive, unexpected yet fitting debut.

Un disco alucinante, que despunta en melodías, producción y, sobretodo, originalidad y desparpajo por parte de un Harry Styles completamente renovado y más maduro. Fantástico, uno de los mejores trabajos de pop que he escuchado nunca.

Harry's debut arrives unfinished and derivative. It's effectively a culling of muses to the point of nearly covering their songs. Instantly i heard the overwhelming influence of Beck's Sea Change on the entirety of the record with "since new york " basically being an outtake. Despite the albums absence of originality it's an interesting direction for the former pop boy band heartthrob. TheHarry's debut arrives unfinished and derivative. The lead single "sign of the times" despite it's heavy Bowie reference point is stunning. Showing off Harry's range like never before. It's moment's like these Harry is at his best when he let's go a little such as on the abrasive arrogance of "kiwi ". The heavy rock and roll is well executed sounding like an offshoot of the black keys, genuinely impressing .
