Perfect album. Definitely the best album of the year thus far. My ears were constantly surprised by the sounds it heard from Fiona and her band. So many twists and turns, so much storytelling, and unconventional sounds and beats. Just delicious.

It's a funny one this, an 8 year wait? Who could have thought we'd get this and all it's greatness, however the record is one of a million for me as I can feel the said greatness pointed out by all these reviews but at some points cannot hear what some of these people want me too, sad to say really...

“Fetch the Bolt Cutters” é o quinto álbum da cantora e pianista estadunidense, Fiona **** Apple.

Fiona apple is an artist that never really can't impress. Even though I am particularly a Hip Hop and Rap fan, I can see the artistry and brilliance of this album. Tracks like Relay and Newspaper are void of almost all instrumentation with the exception of vocals and percussion, and the album primarily relies on layered chants, yelps and howls to fill in the blanks. While Apple's vocal performance features a wide range of emotions, it rarely stands out from a technical standpoint and consistently devolves into idiosyncratic chants and war cries. The album ends on a really sour note in On I Go, a tone-less track riddled with whispers, droning vocals and the occasional dissonant buzz in the background. Without any consistent melodies, hooks or instrumental convergences to latch on to, I have a hard time seeing this album demand replayability or appeal to those outside of Fiona Apple's existing fanbase. 4/10 Expand

This album sounds like it was made by a 10 year old having a tantrum after being told they can't get Animal Crossing on the Switch!

No seriously, I now know that I am uncool, not down with it and have no idea what constitutes a good album anymore. Which is fine with me as long as I don't have to listen to this again! This album has rave reviews but I have no idea how, it's drivel.

And yes, these were apparently very helpful to all the other sheep that wanted to jump on the bandwagon, wrote "Brilliant!" and put up another meaningless 10. Ba-aa-aa-ah!

    Edit:
Okay, I’ve listened a more and am even more convinced this album is nowhere close to the 10 that all you gushing automatons keep heaping on it. Insightful, bold, creative lyrically, yes. But musically uninteresting. And this is a musical album, right? Not poetry? So what’s with all the 10’s?

Let’s look at a couple tracks, shall we? I Want You To Love Me: Some pretty piano flourishes behind meandering, structure-less verses followed by a chorus that’s three words and two notes. “Yooooooooooooooou love me.” What is interesting, enjoyable, or creative about that? And the title track: Some of what sounds like rapping on things in your kitchen, then some more of the structure less, meandering verses followed by an extremely simple, energy-less, musically blah chorus, “Fetch the bolt cutters, I’ve been in here too long.” And repeat. Finish with some dogs barking. OMG, the genius! Album of the year! Seriously, WTF?

Sure, put this up for some poetry or literary awards. Hold her up as a feminist icon, role model. Sure, I’m with you. But musician of the year, heck no. And the sad thing is Fiona doesn’t have to choose between lyrically amazing and musically gorgeous. She has at least three other albums that are both. It’s why I’m a big fan. But apparently that’s over now. Lowering my rating to 4.

    Original review:
I’m a huge Fiona Apple fan. For me, this album doesn’t compare to her first three. It’s not nearly as accessible or musically affecting. And granted I’ve only listened a handful of times, but I don’t think it ever will be. Sadly, as is often the case, all the unconventional-ness and artistic bells and whistles the critics gush over are the very things that make it a ho-hum listen for me. Don’t get me wrong, I hear all the creativity, emotion, honesty, etc. that went into it and respect her for it. But that’s not the same thing as that indescribable, goose bump-causing feeling I get from music I love. And when an album like this is regarded so highly by critics I have to wonder what it is they’re reviewing. Is it music as music, or music as an overall piece of art? I can’t help but think it’s the later and whether it’s actually enjoyable is an afterthought. Or even a detriment. (Kinda like how having a “happy” or satisfying ending seems to make movie critics drop a star, as if being enjoyable to the average viewer is a bad thing.) To give critics the benefit of the doubt, maybe when you get to a certain professional level of music appreciation, being artistically bold and musically affecting become the same thing. But it’s definitely not for me and there’s nothing wrong with that. On the contrary. I think critics should give more consideration to who they’re writing their reviews for. Themselves?

Probably the most artistically bold and creative of Fiona’s albums. But for me (and I’m guessing a lot of people, if they’re honest), the least enjoyable listen. 10 out of 10 for performance art. 6 out of 10 for an album of music.

A side note: How it possible for the Metacritic score to be 100 out of 100 if almost half of the publications MC claims to consider give it a less than perfect score? Either their math is really bad or about six publications are completely thrown out. In which case, isn’t listing them dishonest?

A really good album with amusing lyrics. But not a single song is as good as "Every Single Night", and too much of the time she just rambles on not really singing. Overrated as hell but still great if it's your thing.

About 1 song in I thought- oh she's going to be called an "American Kate Bush of 2020" or something and then on one of the following songs she sings how she needs to run up that hill. Thankfully because of that she can't now be called the Kate Bush of 2020.

I remember being 5 years old and dancing like a maniac to Fiona Apple in the mid-90s. It was accessible. It was fun. It was deep. Inaccessible music doesn't necessarily make music better. Nor does it make music worse. But it is something to note, because the rest of this review is about the music itself.

It's fine. I think I'd much rather listen to The Knife's Shaking the Habitual if I were in the mood to listen to something like this. Certain instruments really shine through in fantastic ways in many songs but are then quickly overwhelmed by the refrain or chorus of the song. It never hits just right for me- too complex for the sake of complexity, too flat for the sake on monotony, and superseded by many many more "deep/lyrical/interesting/complex/complicated/intense" albums out there. It's not bad. It's just not amazing.

Organically rhythmic goes some way to describing it but then Apple throws pop magic on top of it all to turn what could be a mess into a masterpiece. Believe the hype. Expand

Fetch The Bolt Cutters is an album of rage, self deprecation, acceptance and healing following the emotionally tortured The Idler Wheel.. back in 2012. In this offering, Apple went all unconventional and experimental with her sound risking the usual song structure to an almost drumline-themed, always unpredictable and often disjointed sound. With lyrics that our outright self humorous, satirical, emotionally visceral and potent for a casual listener; “Bolt” might be a long, challenging and exhausting listen but the fruits that are to be reaped in the end are just as rewarding when we consider the masterful musicianship displayed by the singer-songwriter here. Fiona Apple has never sounded this self-assured and confident.

Time will tell of course, but this absolutely feels like a classic album already. The cohesion and the flow between tracks is stellar, considering how chaotic the instrumentals and the riffs can be. Despite how intensely layered it is, it never feels exhausting or like it overstays its welcome. A Fiona Apple album is always a gift.

This is a tremendous album. Hands down. It's certainly one of my favorites of the year and favorites of all time. It's weird, catchy, and unlike anything normal. This is one of those albums that once you listen to it, you just know it's perfect. Every single song is a banger and challenges what normal pop sounds like. However, I like this better. It's experimental, out of tune, has weird time signatures, a lo-fi sound, and uses instruments in a different way. At the same time, it invokes some strange emotions. It's almost triumphant and powerful. Apple's voice is so strong and beautiful that she's almost created an avant-garde anthem for us. It's like if Ben Folds, Yoko Ono, and Joni Mitchell merged into one. All the right parts. It's perfect. One might think progressive and pop are oxymoronic when put together, but this is progressive pop and experimental pop in the flesh.
I love every track and would listen to each one in my playlist. But, "Shameika" is a hit, "I Want You to Love Me" is an anthem, "Rack of His" might be the best song.

ALBUM ARTWORK: The artwork is great. It represents the raw and experimental nature of the album. It looks like it's made from pieces of paper and markers, almost childishly, which is the same playfulness and low fidelity that the music has. It almost feels like an evening with Fiona Apple in her living room, with some arts and crafts and wine afterwards. Also, the black, gold, and purple color scheme works very well with the female-empowering theme here. It's strong and bold. Lastly, Apple's extreme close-up selfie in the middle looks like a random Snapchat put in black and white. What else would you expect? She's smirking right at us on the cover. She knows it is casual and quirky and the point is to have fun. And well, I certainly had fun.

fetch the bolt cutters is definitely her most experimental record and the most difficult to listen to - but it is also the one which sounds completely out of this world when you start to REALLY get into it.

from the unusual melodies to the experimental use of new sounds and hard-to-guess lyrics, fiona made a masterpiece that is, i have to admit, worthy of all the critical acclaim. the album is, without a doubt, fiona's most cohesive body of work. it all just fits so well together, which just proves her genius and always improving talent.

It’s meant to be an uncomfortable, claustrophobic listen because it is meant to match the spontaneous anxieties and insecurities in Fiona’s troubled mind. The content itself if heavy hitting as it talks about bullying, depression, and even how Fiona was raped as a young girl. The music relies mainly on piano and percussion, and percussion in this case being anything Fiona finds lying about the house. It pushes her to vocally be as creative as possible and to put her all into her two main instruments that it creates some unexpected rhythms.

My advice is if you listen to this album, throw away all expectations, especially if you’ve listened to her previous work and give it two or three spins for it to really sink in. This is Art Pop, with less of the pop but a huge emphasis on the art.

This album was an experience from me. An emotional rollercoaster. The first time i heard it i felt uncomfortable, repelled but as negative as that sounds it was in all the good ways. It did things i wasn't comfortable doing, it confronted me. The album must be noted as one greater than music. Although it honors musicality well. It's relevance in our social climate of sexual assault, racism and discrimination this was a manifestation of what those victimized by those circumstances would feel without self pity or bias. It's honest. Take relay for example, the 5th song ,which details the aftermath of being wronged. The irrational hate, the need for revenge and perception of the perpetrator. It explores how hating someone or revenge doesn't let u gain anthing besides temporary satisfaction. That by doing so all u r doing is trying to one up the aggressor which is making them determine ur behaviour. Making you want to be just as worse as them just to be better when that notion in itself is contradictory:if they are awful for their actions doing the same would make u just as bad.
The song explores this through a simple yet profound mantra and likewise production. The chorus is uniform whilst the song bursts into almost tribal chants and eruptions of improvisational backing. As if chaos has just insued. Then softly, there's an apology. She acknowledges that she isn't innocent to this.

After learning more about f.t.b.c :it's creation, meaning and intention i felt overwhelmed.
Firstly by how I'd learned this myself through listening and secondly that it's context like fank oceans Tumblr post is for C.O is part of it. Recap:The album was created a long time ago with pieces and different disjointed forms. That different non musical objects (pet dogs remains&baby shoes!)were essential to it's sound. This explains how natural the album feels. It's as if it existence always was.

If i had to use three words to describe it it would be:bold/emotional/complex.

    It looks at everything it sees closely:love(i want you to love me/cosmonauts)trauma (newspaper/for her/newspaper )depression(heavy balloons/drumset)progress (on i go)feminism (shemika/for her/under the table/fetch the bolt cutters)
It's a masterpiece deserving of the heist. A journal of love, trauma and whatever follows

(Well, maybe it is an album for our times after all. . . ) This album isn't about an artist facilitating a connection to the human condition. It's an album that says look at me, pay attention to me. As a person who enjoyed Apple's newest album but is not a fan, I can understand both sides of the reviews. I don't exactly get why the critics are raving about this album and calling it the "album of the year", but I surely grooved to almost every song. Yes, the production does not seem like the best. And the vocals are 'very interesting'. But really, there's a message hidden buried under it all: To "set yourself free." To "fetch the bolt cutters" because "I've been in here too long."

What I believe Fiona Apple is trying to achieve with this new LP is to spread the message that you just gotta do you. You don't need to be the "perfect pop star" and create pop hits that sound identical or use autotune. Her dog barks throughout the album for goodness sake. And I think that's brilliant. But it's so brilliant that you don't even see it at first glance, or you just don't see it at all.

Surely, I wouldn't call "Fetch the Bolt Cutters" the "Best Album of 2020". But I will say that it's one of the smartest and honest.
