This has to be the most irritating music I have heard in a long time. Make you have heard it before you part with your cash. Try Ojos de Brujo to see how it really should be done.

Tom Zé with his 70´s years old, continuous to make good and innovating music, this album is a little resume of what he can do. Brilllhant Album, Genious artist, Certanly is one of the best records of the year until now. I Recommend to all, to the young to the Adult people. Fantastic! 10 with grace.

Tom Ze can be both popular and classic; experimental and harmonious; raise social criticism and be unexpectedly romantic. He always have briliant concepts which are translated into the best brazilian music. Pagode is his best ever cd. Genius!

Don't listen to the anonymous commentator that called this irritating: there are catchy melodies galore! Are there occassional bizzare noises (i.e. loud orgasms)? Absolutely. For the rest of us who want something new in pop music, something that pushes boundaries and makes the listener an active participant in untangling the music, Tom Ze's new record is an absolute revelation and the best I've heard all year. i found this ablum to be incredibly irritating. i liked tom ze's music from the 70s, but despite all the acclaim this album's receiving, all i can hear are lazy hip-hop beats and screeching voices. maybe if i understood portuguese i'd like this better, but the atonality of the songs just annoys me.

This album's getting no love, but it's really outstanding if you understand Tropicalia music AND hip hop, because it takes tropicalia to a new level; the melodies are beautiful, and though some voices are annoying (purposely to reflect different characters' traits) it's enchanting in its diversity and overall spectacular.

It is quite an astounding album. One of the best of the year despite what some these reviews suggest. One that will still be appreciated 20 years down the line just like Tom's Tropicalia era music.

Fantastic! Tom Zé changed my life forever with his sound. He is Unique, nobody in the world make music like him. Estudando o Pagode is no doubt the best album of the Year, or maybe of the century. Another 70 years for this brillant and genius artist.

I guess this album is a good pretext to learn portuguese! It's lovely written and has a compelling rhythm structure. For instance, I believe it to be impossible to ignore the intelligent guitar riffs all the way through "Estudando o Pagode..." The lyrics are dense and, most of the time, educationally humorous, as Marianne M has already put it. So, pretty clever music indeed!

Incredible assertions about men and women are sprinkled throughout 'Estudando..' without being preachy, just the way young Americans love to take-in social criticism. It's an incredibly youthful album in that way. Hip-hop, weird electronica, and samba all stitched together.

  1. To Ze's credit, the concept never overshadows the songs which, at their heart, are pop songs.

A sprightly psych-pop disc overflowing with exquisite melodies and cooing female voices. [14 Apr 2006, p.86]

He forges yet another new vision: one that involves psych rock, quirky funk and bossa nova as much as it does hip-hop and electronica. [#19, p.104]
